Hacky new site preview

The listing, a user profile

It needs a lot of polishing and some things are missing. Will be another week or two.

Tinkering, errors inbound

Because I just switched the site over to PHP 5.3 (from 5.2) there might be errors around. So far I noticed the engines/tools/wads listings did spit out many deprecation warnings, I hid those… If you encounter any errors, please report them.

Why, you ask? I am working on a database driven version of the reviews. Finally… There will be tagging, rudimentary user ratings and the possibility of a proper search function. Any other things I should consider? I want to refrain from adding user accounts. It would be great for some features but too much work.

edit: I want to reduce the rating scale from 1-5 to 3 values. Something along the lines of “Should you play it?” -> “Yes”, “Probably”, “Probably not”. Needs better words of course. Any objections?

edit2: Right, all the description pages are broken because of the stupid comment script. Change the .html in the url to .xml and all should be fine for the time being.

Your favourite map in 2009!

Congratulations to than. His map Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties (But They Do Carry Shotguns) was deemed the best release of the past year by the about 70 people who voted.

Time to replay this gem!

textures2quake, next bounty claimed

Baker has released a tool to convert image files to Quake textures. It adjusts the length of the filename if needed and keeps a log of those renamings. Converting “modern” texture sets to use with Quake and engines that support external textures has never been easier.

Baker declined the bounty and instead proposed a new one: Provide whatever is needed in QuakeC to use origin brushes. Please read through this thread if you are interested. We are both not sure how to properly phrase the goal.

First Model converter alpha released

Sajt released an alpha version of his model converter tool (for which a bounty was declared) over at Inside3D. “(…) this is NOT a stable release. It’s not even a beta. It’s an alpha.” so make sure you read that post entirely.

Since mdl/md2/md3 to mdl conversion is working quite well already and it is not like Sajt would run away laughing like a madman, I gave him the bounty already. So that makes two successful bounties already. Awesome!
