Quote:
"This puts id Software in a wonderful position going forward," said John Carmack, who will continue to serve in his current role as Technical Director. "We will now be able to grow and extend all of our franchises under one roof, leveraging our capabilities across multiple teams while enabling forward looking research to be done in the service of all of them. We will be bigger and stronger, as we recruit the best talent to help us build the landmark games of the future. As trite as it may be for me to say that I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am."

I wonder what will happen next.

Parent company for Bethesda. What now ? The Elder Scrolls V using idtech 5 ?

I fear for the promised GPL release of the Doom 3 engine source code.

In totally unrelated news, Michael Jackson is dead. Shocked

These are strange times, indeed.

Ooookay, you guys are forcasting doom (pun intended) on the horizon, but I'm imagining a Fallout3-like Quake sequel that actually gets some of the old quake elements of freaky darkness and lovecraftian theme right.

I dunno, it could also end in disaster, but I'm impressed with Fallout3 at least. If they touch the Quake series at all, maybe they'll do better with it than ID has for the past couple Quake games.

Just my speculation.

Actually, no. Both Elder Scrolls and Fallout would fit nicely in theirs engines, and surely some new blood in the game design area will help id a lot. My real concern is about their past support to OpenGL and regular source code releases policy under the GPL.

I think this is a positive move. ID can now focus more on their engines and games without getting distracted by the business side of things, and have a huge pool of creative talent to pull from or team with where required - something they've obviously been in dire need of since the departure of Romero.

It's early days yet, and all we've seen is the business announcements. I'm certain Carmack will make the situation clear in his own time. But I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a GPL Doom 3 release.
