Sorry, sorry, sorry - I just can't work out how to get Quake coop working; setting it up and joining.

A full, brief, direction-pointing or in any way helpful guide much appreciated.

On your computer start whatever Quake like normal:

disconnect
maxplayers 4
deathmatch 0
coop 1
map start
status <-- will show ip address or network name

On LAN computer #2

Connect 192.168.1.100 (ip address shown in status command)

I start Quake like this:

Darkplaces -listen 8 +coop 1 +deathmatch 0 +map start

Really only the -listen flag is necessary, and then you can use Quake's multiplayer menu to start the server.

Darkplaces will typically detect the host automatically, and I think standard Quake did this on a lan as well. My friend and I even managed to join without problems over Hamachi, several hundred miles apart, and had a blast playing through the original Q1 SP from start to finish.

I hope you're able to connect! Make sure your firewall knows to not block your Quake engine. You might even need to specify a different port.

If you only intend to have 4 or less players, you don't need the listen flag. You can just type "maxplayers 4" in the console.

The listen flag enables >4 player slots in vanilla Quake and DarkPlaces doesn't even have this limitation, you can set maxplayers to anything.
