Despite Quake being undoubtedly our favorite game, it has great significance in the history of both gaming, and the internet, with its unparalleled early community, and its longevity in an industry that usually only sees a flicker from any one source. This thread is to document the archiving efforts of the many who are attempting to salvage what they can in the wake of IGN's decision. This will be kept clean by keeping it a single post per archiver, and they can edit their post to reflect updates.
I assume it has reached a consensus that a finished archiving of a site, is the site in a localized state, completely functional on any host, or on an individual machine, with all necessary files intact, and all links made relative as best they can be. The format of a post will be broken into two sections, In Progress, what you are currently working on, and Completed, what has been finished in terms of preservation and localization. For example:
In Progress:
http://hosted.planetquake.gamespy.com/site
http://site2.planetquake.gamespy.com
http://site3.planetquake.gamespy.com
Complete:
Original Site URL (where it can be found on IGN until August 31st) - New Site URL (where it is now being hosted if available) - Archive URL (standalone zip of the site for anyone to grab)
I stress the importance of not just hosting these sites elsewhere, but also making available the standalone form of them to others, that way many of us can keep hold of Quake's history, and thus be less vulnerable to the normal ravages of the internet. This is an act of investing in our own community, and an act of historical preservation.
If you would like to contribute, the standard method seems to be using wget (on Linux or Windows) or HTTrack. I myself use wget for Windows, and have met with rather good success thus far. I hope you have the same, or better success, and together we can preserve the best community the internet has seen. _________________ ...and all around me was the chaos of battle and the reek of running blood.... and for the first time in my life I knew true happiness. |

I have about 200 sites saved. Still about 50 to go from the posted lists and then I'll check in with your lists and archives.
I will clean them first and then upload them on QuakeWiki.net. There will be a special archives section with the intact site, and an alternate zip archive. _________________ My Projects: Quake 1 Mods | OpenQuartz 2 | ChipQuake |

I think there are 351 PlanetQuake sites for Quake according to whoever's site however he got the information (?).
Anyway, it is nice to see someone is backing up these great sites. _________________ Tomorrow Never Dies. I feel this Tomorrow knocking on the door ... |

Some of this are not working anymore, some have moved and I think it's somewhere around 300. _________________ My Projects: Quake 1 Mods | OpenQuartz 2 | ChipQuake |

Done!
I have started uploading 260 websites on QuakeWiki.net. Soon after uploading, links will appear on the homepage with a "Visit site" link or a "Download archived site" button. I'm glad I got so far with this project. The sites still need cleaning up and removal of all sort of ads. I'm counting of you to tell me if I miss something and complete the archive.
The links will appear tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
Cheers! :glass:  :drink:
EDIT: The sites have been uploaded! It took a day or so to upload everything and you can find them on QuakeWiki.net (see the site updates). I will work on the theme these days.
Tell me if there's something missing and provide links or even archives to missing sites, so I can complete the list.
When I finish the list, I will create separate archives and post them as well so you can make copies. _________________ My Projects: Quake 1 Mods | OpenQuartz 2 | ChipQuake |

before you say EW PLANETHALFLIFE this is a great mapper's texture resource site regardless of game associated. It'd suck for everybody if this were gone. _________________

I will add it to the archives, along with a Quake 3 mod, True Combat I found yesterday (http://hosted.planetquake.gamespy.com/q3t/). _________________ My Projects: Quake 1 Mods | OpenQuartz 2 | ChipQuake |

Still a lot to do among all the projects I've got on these days. These weeks better said.
Following this archives fixes, optimizations and zipping, I'll do a category system based on game (Quake1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ... n), and more archives with all Quake 1 maps I have lying around, some mod pages, and more. All this in an effort to categorize everything about Quake 1. EVERYTHING.
BIG QUESTION! Does anyone have the ftp.cdrom.com archives/backups/saves/anything? cdrom.com used to be a storage place for all kind of Quake stuff.
Or, are you aware of any quake ftps or repositories on the net? _________________ My Projects: Quake 1 Mods | OpenQuartz 2 | ChipQuake |
