Ok well.

Please check it out. Upload your quake content HERE and we'll move them to the appropriate folder soon enough.

Sorry for the lack of a upload meter... that's server side and I can't fix that. Sad

So everyone knows. If a new quake archive should come about, I will personally make sure everything is transferred over intact.

Sweet! Do you plan to do a idgames2 mirror there too?

also, please do not upload files that were in the cdrom.com archives.

these are well mirrored and do not need yet another home. this is the new archive.

I myself do not have the time to upload all of that... but if someone would like to upload it. I would be happy to lend the space.

I really wouldn't mind hosting those files as well. Talk to me if someone wants to upload it all.

also guys, it's advised to upload the readme of the mod too (renamed to the mod archive's filename) so people can "preview" the mod before downloading like in the good ol' days.

Wow, this is fantastic, Error. I wish it an extremely long life Smile
I might be a bit paranoid, but do you think it would make sense to make the "incoming" folder unavailable to general users, though and make files visible in their sections only once they have been approved by you (and/or other people working with you)? I am, again, thinking about possible misuses by warez uploaders. I was surprised that my "test" file (generator.qc, a little something I coded 4 years ago) was readily available as soon as it was uploaded. Also, is there a limit in terms of size? Would it make sense to have one? (Again, I can't see how someone would need to upload a 150+ meg file on this kind of server, other than to share illegal stuff...) ... my two cents...
But again, congrats! Best initiative I've seen in a while Smile

Well done Error. I'm sure it will become invaluable.

There are quite a lot of grey area mods and apps relating to Quake these days. Personally I've given up caring about litigation from inactive developers/distributors. Hmmm, I don't know where I'm going with this. Never mind.

Oh yeah. Do you think anybody would mind if I hosted WorldCraft 1.6a (full version) and QME 3.0 FULL? Not on Error's FTP of course, but my own site...

I suggest the incoming section is viewable (just the file list) but not downloadable if that is at all possible. Perhaps .txt's can be downloaded though! but what do I know? I'm only Jeremy Sneep.

I plan to upload some QuakeC stuff!

You should also make the archive accessable via FTP.

Yeah, but what happens if whoever is responsible for sorting through these and moving them to the appropriate folders disappears for a while? Taunt people with a mod that they can't get anywhere else? Though that door swings both ways too.

The size limit idea has it's merits though. Maybe figure out a maximum size limit into which most mods would fit, but warez wouldn't, and make it so that anything exceeding that limit would not be downloadable until it was moved to another folder?

for bigger file upoaders, I could make a folder inside the Incoming folder and give them FTP access to only that.

trusting that no one will delete it.

all a question of if you trust other people with your files.

Quake is 23mb zipped, so maybe a limit slightly lower than that.

a couple of my mods are around the 20mb mark though

Yeah, the latest version of UQC is also bigger than that (even though it would make sense to create a much lighter version without all the extra media (videos, pictures and stuff))...

Problem with warez is, warez uploaders could split a larger file in smaller sections and then simply upload dozens of them. I'm sorry about being that negative, but I have seen cool public FTP's completely go down because of warez uploaders and, well, I'm already so fond of that Quake Archive idea that I just want to make sure it does not happen... Smile I would be totally in favour of not having access at all to the "incoming" section. I realize it would be a little frustrating for the uploaders if it takes a while for the file to become available but I think it would be really worth it and a relatively little price to pay to make the archive so much more secure and less likely to be misused by people not belonging to our community.

True enough on that count.

Maybe like Renny said, just make .txt files availible, and have like three or four people with content editing abilities, ala I3D itself?
