What I'd like to see is incremental alpha based upon depth, and from there, based upon brush. I'd like to be able to stand on the shore in e1m4 by the Biosuit, and see the slope to the dropoff in the water, but not be able to make out much passed that. And have a separate pool of water (say where the Ogre rises up) be of a different volume, and base alpha, and of course the same goes for the slime inside the keep beyond the silver key doors.

I just always thought that would be nice, and it seemed somewhat on topic with the current path of this thread.

Hmmm.

Look what I found.

I can't for the life of me figure out what this is...

... and what it is doing on this server.

:-E

A promise of grim deeds to come..?

Quote:
Krup the ogre was pissed.

Somehow this thing had managed to sneak in here unnoticed. His pride was hurt,
and other things, too.

He was watching the little hole in his chest and the small metal star that was
sticking in it. He had not noticed how it got there, but now a small piece of
his right lung was sliding across the floor and a ratcheting noise occurred as
the metal thing whipped back across the room towards the creature that had
suddenly appeared in the high doorway. That hurt.

At first it had seemed to him that it might be a wizard. He thought it came
through the air. Or perhaps a gremlin. It was about ogre height, if a tad
smaller, and something about it was different.

It was not a yumen, at least it was nothing like those soldiers Krup had eaten
before. The veil between the dimensions was pretty thin in places, which was
something that apparently the yumen didn't know. When they poured through the
slipgate in that yumen base and annihilated their defenses, and proceeded to
warm them on a stick until the flesh was lukewarm, it was a short and easy
trip. They hadn't seen them coming.

While Krup was thinking, some very big thing flared and went off with an
earth-shattering "BOOM", and little white giblets began to fall from the sky.
Or so it seemed. He hadn't seen the wizard round the corner before its head
got ripped off clean and most of it smeared across the brick wall to the left.

The thing in front of him was panting, and now he noticed its heart was
beating loudly. It was injured, or at least the garment over one of its legs
was soaked in blood. It hissed through sharp little teeth.

It might have been a yumen, but it was tiny. It was a lot thinner than any
yumen Krup hat ever seen, and long bloody fibers hung from the side of its
head. It wore no helmet. Its claws were clenched around the weapon it had just
fired. They were bloody, too, or maybe red was their natural colour. Whatever
it was, they looked sharp.

It occurred to him that this, perhaps, was a female.

The only females Krup had ever known were his mother, and Shub-Niggurath. He
had a lot of siblings, and his mum had beaten all of them senseless until they
stopped pestering her. She was a force to be reckoned with. In Ogre society,
females were usually held as slaves, or relegated to raise the younglings if
they got lucky. Most of them didn't last long, but Krup's mother was tougher
than most. The one time he had seen Shub-Niggurath, though, he very much
wanted to crawl back behind his mum's garments like a little one.

Still, leaving one female's service and entering another one's had been a good
choice, as even though the Goat-Mother was unspeakably horrific, he was left
to do his guard duties as he saw fit, and more often than not, he was now the
one who dealt out the blows. He liked that.

The thing in front of him had stopped panting. Its heart was beating softer.
It was bandaging its injured extremity, he thought, while periodically
extending a claw to swipe those blood-soaked fibers back behind what he
assumed was its ear. It paid no attention to him.

He was pretty sure now that this was a yumen. A female yumen.

A female yumen warrior.

As the impact of this realisation slowly came to bear, Krup was horrified. And
while he was still horrified, he slumped over and his mind started blanking,
and he thought that his mother didn't seem like such a bad option now, and
that somehow, somewhere, Shub-Niggurath Herself was probably having a problem
without knowing it. And then he phased out.

It was the weirdest day for Krup the Ogre.

The marine had finished her bandage. This should at least stop the bleeding
for a while, she thought. She reloaded the double-barrel shotgun carefully
before tucking it behind her back routinely, next to the double bladed
tritanium axe with the carbon steel edges that had been her husband's wedding
gift. He had been a good soldier. She wasted no more thoughts on this,
however, as it wasn't something she could afford. She tended very carefully to
the grappling hook, double-checking the wire and re-reeling it before stowing
it away. It was her life insurance. She had gotten very good with it.

The hair got on her nerves. She re-tied it quickly with the improvised strip
of uniform, and she knew damn well why crew cuts were popular with the members
of the mobile infantry. That sort of thing was optional where she came from,
and now she had to learn it the hard way, like so many other things.

So many disturbing things.

And then her thoughts turned back to the doors beneath the lake, and
everything dark and Pagan in her awakened and triumphed, and an army couldn't
stop her, and her heart was singing with joy.

Let it be a tiny glimpse into RMQ Episode 1's future, since we have not officially seen anything of it yet.

The lake is fucking deep.

Mh - the water surface not being on the other side isn't an engine issue like I assumed - it's because the volumes in the dm7rq map are entities (triggers), so have all their faces undrawn while the player is inside.

At the same time it lets us have transparent water and non-transparent lava / teleports.

OK, I've got your water fully working, rendering on both sides, and even with underwater warp! Very Happy

I still say that you should be shouting for engines to have independent values for each liquid type; the way you did this is quite evil (especially using "stuffcmd" to set a cshift when the water line is crossed).

Seems the forum has stopped notifying me when posts are made.

The water is made from a combination of stuff - starting with extras func_water and going from there.

Not sure if I mentioned but to stop cheating r_wateralpha is disabled on RMQ MP servers - which is the other reason to have those volumes as entity.

Urre was talking before about a unified series of changes to 'all' engines. There's lots that'd make our lives easier but how far is necessary to go is beyond my ken.

Suffice to say, as new engine features come up we'll adapt to them - it's a very long haul project.

OK, RMQ multiplayer is now running on a test server:

bigfoot.quake1.net:26001

Gotta have this pack installed in order to play. Smile

Reactions are pretty positive. Issues are being fixed.

Would it be possible to make the SSG look more like the normal SG? Like with an arm and what-not?

Sure, only a matter of someone extending the model and skinning the arm part. Keep in mind you'd probably only see the fingertips though since the DBS is so fat.

We have something cooking there, it's just not done yet.

Hi again,

Sorry for the wait, but we've just finished testing our point release patch for this demo. After this we'll be focusing mainly on SP maps and level features for the next demo. You can get a copy of the patch here and a full changelog is available at the RMQ blog. I still intend to resolve any issues mentioned in this thread that we haven't attended to yet - thank you for your continued patience. :)
