My good friend just bought Hexen II, and we've been having a lot of fun with it (no spoilers, please!). However, software Hexen II runs *really* slow for me unless I drop it down to the *lowest* resolution. GL Hexen II wants glide2x.dll, which I don't have anywhere.

Are there any new Hexen engines out? And, since Quake and HexenII are so related, does Darkplaces have the ability to run Hexen II? I'm pretty sure it will run its maps, but probably not the game.

A decent looking engine that uses my video card to render instead of assailing my cpu in software mode would help a ton. Thanks all!

By the way, I just got glHexenII to run, but I'm still wondering if there are other engines out there. In Quake we have Darkplaces and FTE and other options, so I figured the Hexen II community has probably done the same. Does anyone have a high recommendation?

FTE runs hexen2... but one of the bosses needs a noclip. Sad
And it has no built-in hud.

You can try newhexen, which is about the only modified hexen2 engine (that isn't really a quake engine at least).

The Hexen II community is pretty empty and dramatical, there's barely any technological developments for it.

The game lacks alot of depth and without depth there's no interest, so Sad

I'm surprised to hear you say it lacks depth. So far, I've noticed Hexen II out of the box has a lot of stuff Quake lacked... like a story line. Wink

That's too bad they're so inactive. Well, I'll try out newhexen, or just stick with the GLHexenII that I just recently got working.

Cheers, all!

True enough, though having a storyline by no means makes for a good and engrossing game. Razz

Hexen II's primary problem in my opinion probably has to do with it's often rather dull and boring enemies (Though I've seen ports of these monsters to Quake that work quite well) , often boring weapons (Even today, I'd rather play Hexen, though prefer Heretic over both Hexens), and just plain dull levels. Maybe if they'd upped the intensity a bit, I might've found it more fun.

yeah, hexen2 ends up with only ever using a single weapon for most of the game. And then there's the whole running around without any idea what you're meant to be doing...

All ringing so true right now... Sad

I just beat the first boss, and the game promptly crashed after that... :O I'll just have to beat him again, I guess (he was easy, since I'm an archer and can just needle him from a distance).

Yeah? Get ready for a treat then. You're going to be going up against fast, tough and agile enemies that take ages to kill, and not enough ammo to do the job with next. Razz

You sound like you take pleasure in saying that, you sadist... Very Happy

Yea, I really don't like taking enemies on with a melee weapon. It makes dodging their attacks too difficult. And I hit these long dry spells of blue mana, followed by a blue mana surplus. I need that mana to operate my wimpy-but-long-range crossbow. If only the mana feasts and famines were more evened out.

Still, I am having fun. Quake had its shortcomings too. Wink

You have NO IDEA. Twisted Evil

I never played much further than that though. I got bored, and tired of constantly running out of BOTH mannas, while practically competly depleting my ammo just to kill one monster. Crying or Very sad

One of these days, I'm gonna up and make a Hextic: Return to the City of the Damned (Hexen-Heretic combo) mod for quake, just to make laughs at Hexen II's horror. Wink

It seems a bit low for a cigar... in fact, I'm very worried about what I'm looking at.
