Yea, BattleMech is stand-alone too, but I'm happy to hear some people are including it. Smile

We sould create a website about Stand Alone quake mods. Mods that dont need id1 folder, and dont use any Quake file (model, sound, etc.)

We can wait a bit, while more SAM where released, but Its close. Having this website can be interesting for quake pimping purposes.

That's actually a very nice idea. I'd like to see that. We may encourage more people to make stand-alone mods, especially if the site has a help and tutorial section and model/sound resources listed.

BTW, add Ascent of Vigil to my list; I have been forgetting. Smile

Making Quake mods standalone seems to be quite popular nowadays already, which ofcourse is good, as there's potential for more people to play the mods. However, it might lead to that mods which aren't standalone, don't get as much attention Sad

/id1/ is needed silly Tei Razz
Besides, TAoV uses dog.mdl, knight.mdl and hknight.mdl (shortly to be replaced) but they fit in the mods theme fine. I say allow a few models from Quake that are included in the stand alone game on the website.

since dog.mdl and knight.mdl are shareware it's probably ok, as long as you mention in the text file that they are shareware models copyrighted to id software.

The hknight.mdl does of course have to be replaced before you can call it a legit standalone mod.

That's not what I meant Tei... I meant the fact that even though people might know about the mod, they might ignore it, as if it's value is lower than a standalone mod.

Same goes to pretty much any game though, I'd assume... A TC will get more attention than a mod.

I see ALL quake sites news are empty. Moders no more report about releases on websites, most, all even ME, report new mods on forums and chats. So only "in" people know about new stuff.
I think this is a true problem, and not yet another way to pimp stuff.

So... If you get not enough attention, PIMP!, go and search your lazy users!!!.

And yes, Stand Alones _may_ get more download than normal mods. But also need huge efforts, and its somewhat related to the quality. ... AND attract more people to quake. So a SAM mod may be downloaded 600 times by 200 quakers and 400 counter-strike-fanboys. If this add 300 more users to Quake, will be a very positive result.

But thats enough about vaporware-websites.

Lets speak this the next moth or something similar. I am actually on crunch mode at job, can't do nothing.

I thought about some new Quakenews-site recently. You might know my weblog? I got really stressed with school and stuff and a bit lazy too, so I asked myself: How can I get the guys posting their news by themselves? There are many various sites with great projects and great news out there: This board, quakesrc, func_msg, the qw.nu folks and all the "single" pages. Every group has their own realm and it's hard to follow the various activities.

I started working on some Mambo (a content management system) based website. You can see my (paused) efforts here: http://quakeblog.qu.funpic.de/mambo/ Feel free to register and explore the features. But: Please don't take anything seriously over there;)

The main pro-feature is that you can give registered user different levels of interactivity with the cms. There are "authors": users that can submit completely layouted news, which only need the approval of an "publisher". It is also possible to give users limited access to the "backend", ie editing the FAQs and Links. There is also a forum included.

You can use the login "slave", pw: "slave" for testing and playing. "He" has the "editor"-flag. Enjoy;) Please remember to logout, cause there might be others who want to try.

I would do the setup and administration, but I don't know if there would be serious interest and support (!). I am not able to search for YOUR news, but every trustworthy person (like most users here) would get an publisher account if they want to. Also, I don't know about a host. The current one sucks (it's free)!

Please submit your thoughts;) If this post is wrong here, please move. I just wanted to stick to Tei's post and not to open a new thread Question

edit: forgot about the "publisher" account=) "puppy", pw: "puppy". Spam as much as you want, the forums too. I'll deleted it all somewhen...

Nice efforts Spirit, and nice ideas.

I am actually busy, so I am actually a mouth withouth hands.

Hummm....

I really like your main page, http://www.quakeblog.de.vu/, has good content and its updated.

Code:
I asked myself: How can I get the guys posting their news by themselves? Looks like having "your own realm" its needed here. Engine related stuff separate from Quakeworld leagues information.

A posible solution can be a website with bookmarks. So peopele can add and share bookmarks, and tag these bookmarks as quake resources (map, textures, mod, engine, etc..) .
You can add RSS support to this, so clients can check his RSS client for new "map bookmarks" or whatever. A push technology.
As users can add bookmarks, Its not needed that the original modder add info.

Actually exist something similar for Half-Life2. Its a 'fileplanet' alike site that not really host files. Only host link to real files Very Happy

I forgot the url...
