I was wondering if it was legal to extract textures from quake and use them in other non-quake projects as long as its not for profit.

I think I know the answer but I wanted to check with the experts.

The quake retexturing project has some pretty similar textures, which were free for anyone to use last time I checked.
They might look horrible if you scale em down and use in a bsp though.
