"All Hail Quake's Glory!"

The cry rises in a dozen gutteral tongues, echoing around the vast chamber. Steam rises from the assembled crowd, mingling with the smoke from the lava around us. Those of us with eyes gaze lovingly up at our mistress, our mother, the Queen of terror.

"All Praise The Lord Quake!"

Shub Niggurath bathes in the orange glow, her tentacles standing proud and erect. She too is singing praise to our Master, and she is our conduit to him. Through her are the Master's plans transmitted, and through us are his deeds manifested. We exist to serve. I exist to serve.

"Praise Be To Quake!"

One by one we feel our mistress's touch, as she enters our minds, passing on our orders. I wait in anticipation as the Ogre to my left throws his head back in extasy as the connection is made. I know that I am next, and that my mission will be a worthy one.

As she enters my mind I feel the strength of the ages flow through me, filling me with pride, strength and rage. My fur stands on end, bristling with static. Through this, I hear my mistress's words clearly, spoken in a voice as old as time itself.

"You shall guard the door to Cthon's Realm."

As her presence leaves me I revel in my task. To guard the great Cthon is an honour indeed! I feel strength rising through my body, the familiar charge building. I raise my hands high above me, and scream my praise for Quake as the lightning bursts from my clawtips, arching to the distant cave roof. Standing tall and proud I swear an oath to the mistress.

"The invader shall not pass my post!"

I almost feel like nitpicking about Mauve's addition of fur to the creature in his story, which I was certain we had stated earlier it did not have. If I recall correctly, Error mailed id and asked. It's merely a very pale skin tone.

But anyway, I won't, as it's a fine story Smile

/me considers taking time to finish up RemaQe story intro and posting it here

Maybe later.

* Wazat conducts a simple experiment

Wazat (in very convincing science-like lab coat): As you can see, when exposed to static electricity...

*bzzzt*

*audience gasps*

Wazat: ...the shambler puffs up like a fluffy kitten fresh from the dryer.

*shambler hides his face*
Shambler: Don't look at me! Don't look at meeeeee!

Wazat: As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, the ID software team has lied to us all. Shamblers are FLUFFY, CUDDLY, and they like chic-flicks!

Harb, Wazat; thanks... its rather hacky to me, but i felt like typing since i was bored at work
Mauve; yours is very cool... neat that you specified a specific shambler, though, no... hes not furry at all to me (though definitely not pale skin.... its more of a matted flesh with non-skin qualities... definitely a weather protectant. but not furry, or fuzzy)

if something else comes to mind ill see how it gibs out and post it on here later

I must confess I've also always seen it as a furry beast of evil. I was shocked to hear the opposite Razz

Here's a Lovecraft-type piece:

***
Uncounted horrors lay slain behind me as I pushed the arcane alloyed doors apart and entered his seat of power.

Enemies assailed me, fanatical gibbering half-things with the dried blood of a dozen gruesome meals spattered around maws filled with teeth and shadow.

I was ready for them, unleashing the dead magics of the void I caused the very stones of the final tower to shiver in their sockets, moving for the first time since their first enshrining in unknowable aeons past. Perhaps it was the first time they had shifted postion in all time, and they had sprung into existance full-formed with the inception of reality itself, I know not.

With a deep crack, the final tower twisted on foundations long turned to living earth, and hairline fissures opened up across the enpaved floor of the vaulted sanctuary.

As the first creature leapt for me, lightning sprank from the unseen sky, arcing through the tall windows and filling the space with a weird play of shadows and light that gave life to every mouldering crevice. The fiend was torn asunder, its form burning up so rapidly that all of its mass to reach my location was a torrent of ash, burning cinders in my eyes.

I ignored the pain and struck again, rending the skin from a shambler in clumps of matted fur drenched in the blood of its own genesis.

The final minion fell with a dozen nails driven deep into its wattled stump of a neck, gripping my boot in a final effort to defend its master. With a curse I sent it's spirit into the nether and moved slowly towards a raised platform and the dais which lay supine upon it, the final defence nothing more than a tattered curtain.

"I have fought you for years"

I holstered my gun.

"Always in the form of acolytes and slaves"

Unslung my axe.

"I have learned much"

A shimmer of manifest electricity swam over the blade of my notched weapon. The tower uttered a second gutteral sound of stone drawn against stone.

"I come to kill you"

I drew the curtain aside, and looked upon Quake, lord of the broken realms.

The throne was coated with black ichor, overlaid with the washed blood of an unnaturally extended lifetime's worth of innocents sacrificed upon the greatest of all unholy altars. Atop the stained chair lay the dessicated bones of a man sized form, skull abnormally distended by vast intellect or diseased growth, leathery skin long since taken by vermin.

"You cannot kill me Phil"

I turned, and looked into the eyes of a hale and kindly human, the first I had seen in many years.

"I escaped the perils of a mortal life many moons before your kind rose against me, soldier of Earth"

His words were true, I knew it instantly. I swept the gnawed relics from the great chair and sat upon it.

"Long have I searched for a champion to lead my armies upon the field of battle. Each time I find one, sooner or later his power wanes and dies. Perhaps you, of all beings could become my emmisary. Let my spirit enter you willingly and you shall know hope, pleasure and security by my side"

"I cannot kill you"

"No. That task is beyond even myself"

I was silent for a time, perhaps seconds or perhaps millennia, stars wheeling overhead forming unfamiliar patterns in the void. I spoke again with a voice dry and tortured.

"If I cannot kill you, then I shall take your Empire from beneath you. You will be a shadow in the wind wailing for all that you have lost until the end of all things"

The man gently smiled.

"My realm streches across distances and dimention spaces beyond any understanding. This land to which you have laid waste is just a small outpost in a web of power that extends beyond the borders of all known space"

He pointed towards the windows and the half-seen night beyond.

"Should you stand upon the surface of the furthest sun visible in the sky, having touched upon each world between here and there in their infinite variety and multitude, you would still have seen nothing that could prepare you to comprehend the extent of my nation"

Somewhere in the hills beneath the tower, a voice began to wail in unholy prayer, soon joined by a multitudinous chorus beyond counting.

I looked at him one last time as I returned to my feet, unholstered my gun and walked out of the throne room.
***

Edit: Shamblers are furry.

Harb; I frackin love your story

Seriously, that is the best Quake fiction Ive read... and I really would like to see some sort of SERIOUS magic arise from possession of the runes (accompanied by a significant increase in difficulty with the obtaining of each one).

Now if only I could write that well

Sway.

Sway.

Fields of gold and skies of deep purple, interrupted only by a single dead tree, that you swear if it still lived, it would choke the first thing it could get its limbs around, charred bark, standing as a testament to some ancient battle on this field, which might have just fertilized the growth surrounding. You wouldnt expect to see what was almost "life" in this world... though you suspect there is more chaff then wheat to this pasture, and even if thats not the case, it is rather unsettling to see such vibrant colour under such a stoic's sky... with a horizon like Veseveus in the eventuality of its assault.

Beyond this point, the gold stops, and the moss begins... a quagmire in the distance... you can see the rain falling in its dynamic fogging of the world. Quite likely within that swamp lies a fort, though you never could understand how they could be so ancient, yet have sunken so little into the moist Earth... You build fortresses on rock, not shifting sands and sliding mud. That was one thing that got to you in this realm... Quake made no sense. His actions made no sense, but then reality seemed to shift to accomodate the ridiculous choices he made sometimes... Assuming he of course.

Between the wheat and the wet though, stands a monolith of meat, metal, teeth and grenades. This ogre is obviously a dumb one... never really turning his head, checking the environment at all... but you cant count on him to move ahead and leave you unchecked to move on towards the swamp, he is progressing too slowly for your patience, and you share a common direction at the moment. But commonality of orientation can be reconciled by many means, and at the moment your choice means is a loaded Perforator.

Sliding up to a crouch from your prone position, still barely visible above the wheat, short of the dark barrels of the weapon contrasting with the distilled beauty of the local confused growth, you adjust your shoulders and ready your aim.

Squeeze.

Sound is odd like that.... even though only 30 yards away a fully automatic weapon was being fired at him, he didnt seem to hear it until the wavelength had echoed back... which gave just enough time for those crude nine inch nails to travel the distance, and began to reciprocate with the ogres thick skull, their affinity for physics and collision detection. The discussion of velocity didnt last for long, nor did the grey matter located beneath the topic at hand.

A monolith removed, and a mastodon in your eyesights, you sling your weapon back behind you, and move past the generously bleeding corpse on towards that obscured locale you strangely seek.
