Slipgates don't just teleport you to anywhere, they teleport you to another slipgate, as seen in Quake (on the first level of every episode, you start from a slipgate). So to get to another planet, Strogg would have to go through space, because there aren't any slipgates for them to teleport to directly.

Oh yeah? Then where the hell DO the monsters that teleport in from nowhere come from? For example, the second shambler in e1m3 after you kill the first one. =P For that matter, how the heck did a obviously technological slipgate pad appear in another dimension that clearly uses magical type slipgates?

(My theory is that these are small portable devices that were brought by and subseqently placed by the first foos to be teleported, and simply function as a locking point to ease the targeting of Earth's own larger two way primitive slipgates.)

And what of the gate on the start map that leads to Shub's pit?

In my opinion, slipgates are NOT stargates. They don't break you down into energy waves and then reconstruct you on the other side either. What they DO do is "slip" you through space and time to wherever they are targetted to slip you to. One-way slipgates CAN and WILL teleport you ANYWHERE. =P

Even if you DID need some roundish thingie to manifest a portal type gate, any one of the many sports stadiums would work just nicely for a one way Strogg Slipgate invasion portal.

Even if things didn't work that way, they could simply send several unmanned probes carrying slipgate targetting nodes, and THEN gate in entire armies of Strogg the moment they landed, thereby negating the need for constant attack fleets.

Some ideas for weapons set and enemies, feel free to disregard, or modify:

Hand Grenade - Simple hand grenades that were once used by the natives. Secondary fire throws out proxie 'nades.

Shotgun - Your trusty autoloading drum-fed sidekick from back when you telefragged Shub. You recently found a modernization kit for this that increases the amount of shot, damage and spread it fires, and also adds an option rail.

Upgrade: Self-Recharging Blaster - The latest model sidearm used by whoever used to live here. Fits suprisingly well on your shotgun's option rail...

Special: Offhand Hand Grenade - Toss a hand grenade.

Double-Barrel Shotgun (looks like PerQuake's elephant rifle) - Simple, reliable weapon from old times. Can be fired one barrel at a time, or both at once for double the damage!

Upgrade: Flashlight - for dark areas!

Assault Rifle - Machinegun with underslung grenade launcher that was used by the locals right up to their defeat. Secondary fires the grenade launcher.

Perforator EX - Just like the old nail perforator, only adding two more barrels and a homing nail mode!

    Monsters:
eDie - From quoth. Rebuilt cyborg ogre with buzzsaw arm and perforator for a left arm!

    Sentinel - Also from quoth.

Turrets - Both Ikka's and the ones from custents.

Hunter - ShoTro's idea. You can find more info on it from his posts.

Mutant - Also one of ShoTro's ideas. See above.

If I think up any more, I'll post 'em. Wink

I'm pretty certain that the Q1 manual said that Quake is using his (?her?) own slipgates to launch an assault on earth. The way I see the sequence is:

* Stroggos invasion, counterattack, etc.
* Experiments with captured Strogg technology - a limited form of teleporter (the slipgate) is developed (this is similar to in concept to V2 rockets after the war).
* Further experiments go wrong, other dimensions open, an enemy codenamed Quake attacks.

So the whole thing becomes an analogy for experimenting with advanced enemy technology leading to the age of nuclear weapons! (I didn't intend that... Very Happy )

Incidentally, I've always seen the grunts and enforcers as being human in origin. Quake's realms are very archaic and low tech, but presumably there would be more captured Strogg tech in the base levels (where these guys mostly hang out), and it would be just like the big Q to start having a bit of fun with it - not a full conversion, but enough to suit his/her purposes. It makes sense that Stroggs would never harness the technology of slipgates, (and instead merely use teleporters), but I think in this story line there should be a slipgate on native Stroggos where another episode takes place.

A slipgate that leads to a gothic medieval "Quakish" set of levels, where the newly established Strogg army flexes its muscle by wiping out the remnants of Quake's army. However, in this dimension, they didn't count on the powers of some of Quake's last remaining minions. These beings should be stronger than Vores and Shamblers. Creatures of an Elder World that are Quake's highest comrades. Big nasty Lovecraftian monsters, that the Stroggs were not expecting to meet on their path to complete dominance. So in this realm, Quake's army still holds the cards.

The object of this episode is kill as many of these creatures as you can, and then seal off their entry into your dimension by destroying the last slipgate on Stroggos.
The reason the player would enter the slipgate in the first place was because he didn't know where it lead to, and feared it may be a doorway back to Earth. Once he's actually in the realm, his only objective is to get back out of it, and destroy the slipgate.

Clearly, all monsters teleporting in to the levels do so by magic. Don't forget, a lot of the Quake realm is magic based, not technology. And don't forget that even Grunts and Enforcers could teleport in to anywhere, so they must have had a pretty good connection with Quake/Shub, if they got to use that magic. The teleporters in Quake are clearly very magical, not technology. Slipgates although are technology, hence limited by it (like requiring a recieving slipgate pad or similar).
