I mean, I don't play it (because I don't play DM), but it does have some solid weapons and is very smooth and responsive, despite being cartoony... _________________ F. A. I'll buy the first and last two, but the weapons... Well, let's just say that UT was waaay ahead of said engine demo. I mean, sure they worked, but that's about it. Very boring. _________________ "Roboto suggests Plasma Bazooka." |

UT ahead in weapon design? Because of the secondary fire mode? UT is rather terrible and the random weapons are quite a big point there.
The only id games I actually liked were Doom1(+2), Quake and Quake 3. Quake 4 was nice, but Raven. I tried Keen but it was weird (just as Duke 1+2), probably I am used of different games. _________________ Quake Maps |

Q3's weapons were designed like that because they wanted to.
So yeah, games with very few weapons are called tech demos? Last time i checked tech demos have nothing but one lame tech toy to show off the tech. And 10 weapons is plenty of weapons don't you think |

UT has great weapon design.
So does Q3A. Except its weapons looked... playful. (I am still convinced the lightning gun is using stock art that never got replaced).
Comparing UT and Q3A is like comparing Valve and game design studios, they're just two different things.
Doom has great guns, Quake's are good but more suited for singleplayer than multiplayer.
I like most things id has made, but TA felt kind of... soulless. And Doom3 has a unique suite of problems, most of which is simply in the level design. |

Well, that was unexpected. All I said was Q3A's weapons were boring, and that Q3A was essentially a tech demo. (an extra nice one perhaps, but still a tech demo)
scar3crow's valve / game studio analogy was on mark, and I probably shouldn't have tried to compare the two.

What's so random about them? They seem pretty straightforward to me. And let's not forget about certain unique features some weapons have. ASMD Combo strike to name one.
Both Dooms: good.
Quake: Teh Rawk.
Quake2: Only okay if you're playing the mission pack, or Castles of Stroggos 3. Otherwise prepare to be scarred mentally.
Quake3: Okayish, though rather plain and uninspired. Plus all you get in the way of extras is CTF. And some oddball animation of Xaero doing some filp then turning into stone for an ending. O_o
Quake4: No idea, never played it. From a weapons standpoint, it doesn't sound bad, but well... Strogg.
Keen: Classic. People would probably find it sorta wierd nowadays though. The later Goodbye Galaxy / Armageddon Machine was probably the best section of it. _________________ "Roboto suggests Plasma Bazooka." |

Doom 1 & 2 - fabulous at the time, last time I played them was on 360, novelty/nostalgia value now only ...
Quake -
Quake 2 - boring
Quake 3 - fun, still play LAN 1v1 with my son; can't wait to play the single player game it's a mod of
Doom 3 - tbh I loved it in patches, but it took a great deal of perseverence thru' the boring bits
Quake 4 - still sad it wasn't Quake based, better than Quake 2 though _________________ my site |

I'll just do the ones I've played.
Classic Doom (1 and 2) - Pretty good. Still playable. Still fun left in them even this far on.
Quake - Still the daddy...
Quake 2 - Not as bad as I expected it to be.
Quake 3 - Where I cut my teeth. Haven't played in a while, but it was good training for me. |

They're all cool games. The one I've played the least must be Q2, but I still enjoyed it a good deal. As a game, Q3 was the best, people who talk about tech demos or whatever are out of their skulls. Quake is the funnest to develop on!  _________________ Look out for Twigboy |

Q3 was NOT the best. That credit must go to Q1 or even Q2. A lot of the Q3 concepts are just carry overs from those 2 earlier games and for that Q3 came across as just being a bunch of cool ideas lumped together with some eye candy. Whether Q3 was a tech demo is of course debatable.
If we remember correctly, Q3 and Unreal Tournament were being developed at about the same time and in fact, Q3 was released just 2-3 months earlier than UT. Maybe Id wanted to take the wind out of the whole "deathmatch arena" concept that UT revolved around but of course, it failed miserably, appealing only to diehard Id fanboys. I myself grabbed Q3 the day it came out but was very much dissappointed by the limited scope of gameplay that it offered. I remember trading in my Q3 for UT when that came out and having many great deathmatch games on UT afterwards. When Q3: TA came out I was like so "LOL *points finger*".
For me, the whole evolution of multiplayer deathmatch and bot development was Q1-> Q2 -> UT -> UT2003 -> UT2004
Q3 was just the evolutionary dead end as far as I was concerned. |

I'd rather see Quake appear on TotalGaming.net - it predates Steam and it's much less intrusive. Anyway, I'll give my take:
Doom 1 and 2 - Still good. I dropped 800 points to get 1 off the Live Arcade, and I'd be happy to spend another 800 for the sequel.
Quake - Untouchable!
Quake 2 - Almost as much fun to play, but sadly missing the same gothic atmosphere.
Quake 3 - Seemed alright to me, but I was mostly wrapped up in UT by then.
Doom 3 - I enjoyed this, but never got around to completing it. Definitely had some brilliant moments, like when you get into Hell.
Quake 4 - Boring, I found. Very repetitive levels and enemies.
Looking at the list, the player weapons seem to have taken the biggest blow over time. Doom's (and most of Quake's) weapons looked and sounded powerful, but almost every weapon in the later games just make a sort of wimpy 'tut-tut-tut' noise. I want my guns to go boom! |

Quake3 was solid and smooth, UT was more varied but less focused. They were both good games. Though Quake3 could have done without a few of its weapons (they should have chosen between the plasmagun and the shaft...) _________________ F. A.
