One key to making a single player map enjoyable is making the player run all over the place and look for things and otherwise frustrate the player and slow the player down ...

Just a mental list of techniques ...

Door won't open
Show key or item player cannot reach
Make player go find a key
Close a door on a player that is important for navigation
Have an area with a bridge that isn't lowered
Make player deal with unexpected "traps" ... floor breaks, now you are stuck far down below
Well hidden button, player has to find it
The trip would be easy, but there are Shalraths which have unerring aim far away hindering that path.
Trigger_multiple questy situation
Re-usable start-map like setup requiring the runes
