I really think the modding community needs a file repository, like cdrom.com used to be. I don't know how to achieve this though. It seems like mods that came out over a year ago get lost too quickly, we need some permanancy around here.

we can try convincing 3darchive.gamers.org to reopen idgames2 and contact the mirrors but that won't help much.

also, we could use our own idgames2 file database like doomworld does

We need an anonymous ftp or something, something with huge capacity too. If only gamers.org would let us in...

If we were to get something of the sort back, perhaps we should then focus on having uptodate links to such... and convince the existing review sites and such to accurately point to it. So many sites point to mod and map dls that no longer work.... Perhaps the func_msgboard people have some ideas on this? idgames2 is an archive of mods and maps after all.

At last check with Frik, idgames2 was amounting to over 4gigs... and I think if it was a known mirror you might hit your bandwidth fairly quickly.

I would suggest the same thing, it's made the Doom community (basically Doomworld) very successful.

Of course, if the master archives would be reopened for submissions it'd still need someone there to review and check every submission to fit in with their guidelines.

Ty Haldermann is the only one managing the idgames archive and he's only Doom engine focused. Not sure if he could manage the extra work for idgames2, especially since he used to live in new orleans and all...

I would be up for helping moderate such submissions, the question minorly that of technical skill (FTPs wont let me be, or let me be me on irc, try to shutdown new mods with a leak, but it feels empty without walnut creek). Sorry for the musical burst. The bigger question is time, just because I am in school and working, thus every few months my whole schedule fluctuates, as do my responsibilities outside of Quake.

Then again, even with a revitalization of Quake, submissions will be slow enough that it should hardly be overwhelming by any means... But there are plenty of people on this forum alone qualified to take on such a position if allowed to, and willing, to do so.

You could always go with the "Dump your files here" method, offering some sort of hosting for all quake-related files. Maybe some Qakeradio : D

what if we could do a simple user registration through php, have a good uploading script, and each person would have their own folder on that ftp?

also, when I get paid next, I could upgrade my service to get a shit-ton more bandwidth

Just give me some php stuff and tell me how to enable ftp upload and you will have your host.
I just sent them (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/) another mail.
