Since I'm hardly up on Quake news anymore, this is probably old hat to most of you, but Eternal War: Shadows of Light, the previously commercial mod, is now free.

Download site : 65mb download
Developer site : xrucifix.com
My mirror : quaketerminus.com

I actually bought this game way back in 2003 (I think). It's not bad at all really. It's nice that Xrucifix have bothered to release it, and not just fade away like the developers of some of the other commercial mods (Malice & Shrak).

It seems to be a total conversion based on the Telejano engine. It seems to use md3 models.

So yeah, more or less a Quake mod.

A Christian Quake mod... the good guy is called Mike (Michael), the fallen angel he has to save is called John ... aww. Sponsored by some Christian gamer site.

Hear the message, folks. Wink

Quake Terminus says "a lot of the content was borrowed". I'll try it anyway, could be interesting. Razz

Edit: Engine and models are nice, level design reminds me of Doom and Heretic, but eventually I had to quit because everything started to look the same. If you want to smite evil and pray for health while rescuing your friend from porn and nihilism, this is the game for you.

It is also quite hard.

Sorry, I should have said it was a stand alone. Commercial Quake mod or add-on is not the right description.

In my view, the "borrowed" content aspect of it wont affect your playing experience unless you have some kind of sponge-like un-godly knowledge of the back catalogue of Quake single player levels. It's a good game to be honest*. I paid hard earned cash for it, and didn't feel particularly cheated. Other people have different views perhaps.

Since it's now free - try it out Wink

* For a budget, independently made, 2003 title.

It's pretty nice. Medieval setting, md2 models, a bit unoptimized as on slower computers, the sounds stuttered, and lots of particles would reduce it to 2 or 3 frames per second, even with lowest settings.

A great mod to start optimizing and rebuilding and releasing as GPL.

Maybe. But there are some great mods out there that could be enhanced and rewritten. It's just an idea.

Heh, well if they "borrowed" the Telejano engine and didn't abide by the GPL they deserve THE WRATH OF GOD I TELL YOU, THE WRATH OF GOD!

I've nothing against fundamentalist Christians, I just find them funny. Sometimes.

On the other hand some of their models are really quite nifty. Very Happy

So, does this mean we can rip out any assets in this game and re-use for our own projects?

Most of the models and some sounds I think were ripped from the Quake2 TC "Dawn of Darkness". They claim to have gotten permission. Other content was apparently appropriated from Hexen2, Heretic2, and Fantasy Quake. Tomaz did a lot of engine work for them but they didn't pay him and he burnt out. Some other guy finished the last 5% of the engine and got the credit. (leileilol probably remembers the details better than I do.) At the time the company was called "Two Guys Software", I've never heard of "Xrucifix". The people who led the project came across as jerks trying to make money for themselves without doing any work. The Christian theme was some niche audience targeting that only surfaced in a few text printouts in the game, probably. (And they say that because you are killing demons, it's all good. Well, by that logic Doom is a Christian game too.) I personally think the mod is worthless (no offense to Xsniper and people who put honest work into it). Dawn of Darkness for Quake2 is a hundred times better.

I've also noticed that they've ripped off the Q3A smoke texture that everyone uses. Evil or Very Mad

Sad to hear the story behind it though, sounds like some good guys got screwed.

I had to switch on god mode because it was so hellishly hard.

About the Christian theme, I have nothing against Christians but when I'm supposed to pray all the time in a game to get health it's just a bit over the top. And those text screens are persistent.

Seems like the resurrection of this mod is due to some Christian gamer site.

Now I'll have to try Dawn of Darkness. Yes please. The models were indeed the best part of this.

The engine was very cool, good work Tei, Tomaz or whoever did it.

The changelopg that pops up during the installation says something about md3 models, that's where I got that from.

I was looking inside the game's directory and I opened several md2 models with Quick3D to see what they look like.

FWIW, Sandy Petersen defended Doom from his perspective as a Mormon stating that the demons are the villains.

I don't find praying for health to be any more over the top than picking up a health box left there in an enemy's base. Really its just a longer (more game mechanicy) form of give h x, which is in keeping with the theme.

Thanks for sharing Megazoid!
