I'd be happy to see Q2 booths along with Quake ones, and IRC channels dedicated to Q2 events along with channels for Quake ones. I recall that one of the main reasons for people not wanting Q2 in this expo was that it would probably overshadow Quake, not giving Quake it's chance to shine. That's obviously still possible, but the probability is a lot smaller now. See, back then the Q2 source release was fairly fresh, people being blinded by the Q2 > Quake "facts" (2 is more than 1, isn't it?). I believe that has toned down, and would be happy to welcome Q2 modders, mappers, engine-coders and players to this event.

Note what I said in the beginning of the post, many things will inevitably be separate, even though the site might not be, and there would probably be an official Qexpo IRC channel. You just won't be able to speedmod or speedmap for both Quake and Q2 in the same session Razz

The main reason to not have Quake2 is just that if they want in so badly why don't they make a q2expo? This would put no additional burden on the qexpo staff, and allow them to schedule the event for Q2's release date each year.

The main reason to have Quake2 is that the qexpo staff know how to handle this, and it doesn't burden them all that much to add an additional set of sections, it would also bring the communities together more.

I'm still undecided. I'm leaning toward letting them in; however, I'm concerned about the psycho-eccentric attitude of some of the Q2 folks, especially those who threw that huge tantrum last time when we chose not to include them.

Assuming those people are gone, dead, or at least toned down and a bit better behaved, I think I can be comfortable with including the Q2 community. All I ask is that they help out with the event and not make a scene when we don't bend over backwards to treat them like they're better than us or something. They're not gods, but some of them are very cool chaps and I'd like to include them in the event.

And I'm interested in the projects they're working on, too.

hrmm, perhaps instead of being concerned about 'psycho-eccentric' attitudes, you should be more concerned with your own attitude of being unwilling to help out anyone but yourself when it requires little to no extra work on your part. I run a website devoted to quake2, which i dont even play any more, but you don't see me telling quake2 players that I wont help them out. I also don't exclude other quake2 mods besides gxmod because i didnt play them. My site is called q2players, which specifies that it is for quake2. Perhaps you should rename qexpo to q1expo if it's not really about quake, but only quake1? I am sorry, but you just look like pompous selfish pricks. I am sorry that you feel soo separated from the quake2 community, but I don't remember it ever being the quake2 people trying to make it this way. We all discuss on the quakesrc forums, but perhaps quake2 should have no boards there as it's not quake1 according to lh and wazat's attitude? Personally I think both of you guys need to look in the mirror long and hard and do some reflecting on who has the real problem.

And acting like people threw a fit when you didnt bend over backwards to treat us like we're better than you? Sorry but no, the only ones trying to act better are the ones that werent willing to allow quake2 at all. No one ever asked you to bend over, we simply asked to be included as well, and were treated with bad attitudes and basically told to fuck off. I'd like to hear a good explanation of what would have been so difficult in adding quake2 things to last years qexpo, being as it was apparently so easy to run a q1 booth. I wasn't aware websites were somehow so discerning when it came to html content. I find it interesting that somehow including quake2 may be a good idea this year, but somehow it wasnt last year? Sorry, but trying to pawn off your bad attitude last year as other people throwing fits is just pathetic. Maybe the only tantrum that was thrown was the egomaniacal ramblings of people unwilling to help others out of pure selfishness. If you two want to separate yourselves so completely from us 'psycho' q2'ers, then do it. Go get your own forums and such, and make a real separation, because the sites you both post on are certainly not meant to be only for quake1 developers. The whole point of open-source is that we can all share, but apparently this attitude stops once it gets past source code. Maybe you should look at the theory of open source and apply it to other endevors, such as quake related websites. Anyways, I vote for no qexpo at all if the ones running it want to act like they have some right to constantly talk down to people. Just because I didn't spend my time specifically making a qexpo website doesn't mean I havn't done my share of donating. I spent a long time coding the php for my website to give people a place to chat and post demos and the like. I also run 4 servers that are open to the community for free. I also give people web hosting and help them out with tournaments and such. Acting like you are the only ones giving anything to the quake community is sad. I am sorry that people like tei get catagorized as quake1 coders because lh and wazat want to be separated, cause I have seen tei offer quite a bit of help to q2 people, and never seen him with the bad attitude of others.

The reason we it's called Qexpo is because the game is called Quake, not Quake 1. Qexpo was setup by the Q1 community to celebrate our endevours with this engine.

If Q2 were to hold an expo and not allow Q1 in, I really don't think I'd get pissed off. That's totally their right if they want to celebrate their game.

The point this guy seems to be missing is that we probably ARE opening Qexpo up to Q2 as well! Why the hell is that a reason to flame us?

However, despite this rant I'm still pro allowing Q2 in, though I now expect the number of votes against it to rise, and I don't blame people.

We didn't intend to insult the Q2 community by not including them in the last Qexpo, they weren't included for the same reason the Q3, UT and even GTA communities weren't let it, i.e. that it was a Quake Expo (and Quake = Quake 1).

Dude, it's not cool to start flaming us just because we're trying to extend a hand and bridge the gap.

Everyone: No need for flames to be lit. The QExpo was started by THIS community in efforts to boost publicity and show off all the wonderful things we've done with this amazingly beautiful game, to unite us with fellow modders, and to just have fun for a week. The addition of Quake 2 to the roster would be a big boost for both communities and should not be shunned away and there is definately no need for flame wars. Please, try to keep this peaceful and make the QExpo a fun event that people can look forward to and not despise.

We're trying to push this QExpo as far as we can in ways of publicity. Anyone that can help us, please do. Magazines, e-zines, message boards, news sites, etc. If you can help, please do and attempt to contact someone that is involved in the QExpo.

Well, you know, I'm not even sure what evilpope does in the Q2 community. If he's not a part of it, then he shouldn't be giving a first impression, so I take back what I said. I'm sure there are many good people in the Q2 community, so that's not the problem.

The Quake and Quake 2 and Quake engines are closer than any other example you can give, and although the communities are separate (except perhaps for the QSG forums community), there are still similarities. I don't think QExpo is an idea that wouldn't particularly work with two engines instead of one. As long as no overshadowing is done, and long as there is no non-friendly competition (we'd have to work on that one as soon as possible, once we establish something), then I think it should work great.

And, to evilpope, Quake is called Quake, not Quake 1. When someone says Quake, they should automatically be taken to mean Quake, not the Quake series. There is no reason we should change it to Q1Expo to imply that it is original Quake only. (Although, if we were two include both engines, QExpo would still work, as long as we have some kind of hybrid logo at the top of the site like PQ does)

I really disagree with most of what evilpope says, for example placing the blame on the Quake community for not including Quake 2. I remember hostility last year, but I also remember that being instigated just as much by Quake 2 people as Quake 1. I think evilpope should be glad that we're favourably considering this year.

If we get responses like his from too many people in the Q2 community, then I think we should forget about it. We don't want bitterness or anything like that from anyone. Other than that, I'm for it.

evilpope: To clarify, I wasn't insulting the q2 community. I was insulting you. I'm sorry it sounded like I was generalizing your... amusing behavior to the rest of the community. Unfortunately you tend to be the highest-profile Q2 member we at I3D ever see, so it's kind of hard to remember the other 98% of the community is indeed desirable to interact with.

So I appologize to the Q2 community. You should not be judged by the acts of assholes. I mean this without sarcasm -- Most of us at I3D don't want to be insinuating or rude. Personally I'd like to leave last QExpo's tensions behind and start anew.

As for including Q2, I am in favor of including you guys. Despite evilpope's efforts, because I don't imagine that he represents the will of the community, assuming they even know about this thread.

My question is, do you even want to have an expo with us? If evilpope's words meant anything - and they don't - I might think you want nothing to do with the event.

Assuming we all decide to get along and put together a joint event, we have a few options. One would be to combine onto the same page and all work together on each others' news, scripting, etc. Another option is to each hold our own expos at the same time, QExpo and Q2Expo (or Q1Expo and Q2Expo, oye), at separate locations, but to link to each other and recommend each others' mods that we like. Even post news on each others' main events, or when we see something that interests us.

I have Quake2 installed on my compy, and could probably find the new engines easily enough. A big expo showing off the pride of everyone's work could be very good for publicity and morale.

Or we could ignore each other. That's better than another flamewar.
