I just discover the existence of SynQ.

Cool!, another replacement for quake, and with a even stronger anti-law-problems shield Very Happy

I am reading the wiki, the vision stamente, seems a good one.

I just have to comment that Telejano whas designed to run on minimal enviroments. Can even run withouth any quake file, but the console chat (and thats because a bug).

So Telejano don't need copyprotected files, like the graphics for menus...

Anyway Telejano 8.02 looks awfull with SynQ, I think is the explosion sprites, and the huge size of the lighting gun blue light.

Is SynQ active? whats the next target? is already on a refinement phase?

Hmmm, I googled for SynQ (bad, bad Tei! No links for us, no cake for you!). "Based on OpenQuartz" ? Ouch.
While I salute any effort to create a 100% GPL version of the game content, all I can say seeing the brighting textures is: "MY EYES! THEY BURN! OMG MY EYES!". Starting from scratch would be a better idea. OpenQuartz should be a example of how to NOT do a GPL'd Quake.

the reason for openquartz's wacky direction is that it was cobbled from what they already had made lying around - the only real stuff made for it were the gfx.wad, weapons, ammo and player.

I'm lazy. I've only made my new rocket launcher for OQ+ in the past month. ergh

SynQ looks like a mess of license conflicts of copy and pastery from resources and quake asset remakes. Not good.

Cheapy likes to slander people and projects he doesn't like. Zzzzzz. Rolling Eyes

All of SynQ is made from GPL, GPL-compatible and unrestricted "no strings attached" public domain sources.

There may be some links on the SynQ wiki to content sites with licenses that does not fall into those categories, but those are just for reference when accumulating a list of links.

Correct, I don't deny it is very inconsistent at this stage. It isn't anywhere close to done.

"You may use this but give me credit" is not enough detail to comply as a GPL compatible license. You are using weapons and textures that were intended as Quake remakes in the Quake likeness and trademark that do not have a GPL compatible license.

This is all just scavenged up together with no original work just to get more players on your server. That's the truth.

Tei, if you want something truly Free, then you'll have to look harder.

Then you know very little about this project and confirmed you are just making statements that you feel like making simply because you don't like me.

Well, too bad Cheapy Very Happy

Wow -- trademarks on look and feel. Please entertain an attorney with the idea of that one.

You have to admit the screenshots look absolutely and terrible, almost comically so. Unfortunately there are only thumbnails that I could see, no full images so it's hard to tell for sure. Is this a recent project? I'd never heard of it before.

And hey, since when is QME 3.0 freeware? O_o

It was announced somewhere on the QuakeExpo 2006 site. I am assuming whoever posted that was telling the truth.

Damn: I can't find anything to back this up Sad

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!.. Cheapy, you are doing it _again_.

Seems you are good at the task to locate infringing files. Even If is a byzarre sound file use once on a 1998 game distributed only on India to 32 persons.
But you use that amazing skill in a moronish way.

AGAIN:
If you think some proyect is infringing. Be usefull. Make a list of the ofending material and send a private EMAIL to the creator, make the email helpfull and friendly, and let the creator fix the problem in a private way.

DON'T create flames on a internet forum, making the author angry, and providing no usefull data.
Is moronish because:
- It make the creators of usefull data angry.
- May kill interesting proyects
- It doest nothing to fix the original proyect
- Make you looks like a idiot, and you are not a idiot

Ok?
My english is broken, but I hope this text is clear enough.

IMHO the SynQ work is free from infringements. I see not mach on the SynQ graphics vs the original Quake. It looks al feels like a alternate OpenQuartz. And seems a true effort to provide a clean room GPLish Quake.

/me slaps CheapAlert in the face with a large trout

I had a big long post, but after reading Tei's comments I will be following his advice.

Tei, thank you for taking the time to examine the SynQ project firsthand.

While it's true that a couple of the screenshots of Synq look a little funky, then one does bear the name of "startjoke2" and the other "startearly"... so I think we just need to be patient, here Smile ... obviously the aim of some of them is just to say "look, this map is not using any original texture at all", not "look, these are the textures we're going to use in our final version" Wink
I actually like the way some of the DM maps look. It's true the pictures are a little small, but I understand the ida of giving people a vague idea of how it's going to look like but not too much because, again, these things are going to be worked on more and polished up, I assume.
We can't blame people for trying. I really think a free quake would be a nice bubble of oxygen for the community. I know most of us own Quake and I know the game is still on sale, but then the idea is to make a free version of it easily accessible to anyone who is not a Quake fan and would still be tempted to try out a mod, a map or an engine.
Oh, and I agree with Tei's point on the need to make criticism as positive and constructive as possible. A list of problematic textures would be a good start.

You know. I have learned something from this thread.

Although it is pretty rare, there have been occasions where I have said some things about others projects that were phrased maybe just a little bit callously (most recently perhaps I was a little too harsh about the Quake10Year project and it made scar3crow upset).

No one is perfect and through seeing how some of this made me feel, I think I have learned a lesson I have needed to learn for a long time.

I haven't been entirely innocent in this department. I hope to change that.

/me cheers for Tei

Yeah, Synq has a very... interesting... look to it, but it's first goal is to make a completely GPL game. The dm4, dm5, dm6 textures are actually quite nice looking. I think that's where more time was spent, as opposed to the textures for the single player maps. The monster models are rather strange too, but again, that's where a little less time was spent, and I'm sure those will be improved later on.

The one thing that kinda turns me off from it is the statement in the masthead image "Rethinking the game to appeal to the next generation". There's a number of problems with this:

1. Blasphemy! The game does NOT need, want, or should be rethought. Making GPL content is awesome, making it with higher quality standards is also a good idea. Just say no to thinking, please.

2. Next generation? Please. You are not Worf, you'd be lucky if you qualify as Lt. Reginald Barclay.
