If you guys want to see some imaginative modding, check out the server hub.quakeone.com

It has a trampoline, knights with crossed swords that raise their swords to allow you to pass, took what I believe is existing QuakeC mods for pacman and tetris and made some improvised arcade machines.

I've never seen anything like this.

It was made by Gunter, who runs an FVF server and has added a ton of wild stuff into FVF.

It also has teleporters to connect you to other Quake servers, hence it is a hub.

Here is a thread where players talk about it:

http://www.quakeone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1035

We had DNS aliased the server a week or 2 ago and I guess Gunter loaded it up today. Everyone who has seen it has been impressed.

I was really suprised when I visited it, I expected something different because it's Gunter but he went all-out on this. It's truly amazing.

I have to say, Gunter's Hub is one of the most ingenuitive things released. I love it.

Yes,this is the most complex QuakeC coding I've seen in a long time,no doubt this will bloom into an even bigger project than it already is,they are pushing the boundaries of what you would call a Quake Mod , and to rip off McDonalds "Im lovin it".

Be careful while playing Tetris - Gunter's working on fixing this bug now but when I was playing it, Foqer was able to move my tetris pieces around and mess up my game.

The fact he can't rip off my tetris mod properly bothers me.

Edit: I'm kidding, I'm glad someone is using the code. But that shouldn't happen if he used the plugin version I linked to. It could happen if he used the Arcade mod version, since that was re-engineered to be single player only.

He hasn't really released it, so I don't see where he could have given credit. The more annoying thing is the whole of the Quake One board being ignorant of mods released just last year.

Gunter is a good guy, he wouldn't leave something uncredited when he's done. All the QuakeC types in our community are good guys who credit their work as best they can.

(I thought you made an arcade mod but I never tried it, I think I saw it at your 2005 QExpo booth).

What ones do feel people should know about? Remember, I don't think most of the average "joes" in any of the Quake communities visited the QExpo site last year.

My guess is that about 3% went there. None of the sites that those players go to had any information about QExpo last year and there are a number of players that wouldn't have even had a web site to go to.

I'm not sure slapping a bunch of stuff I and MauveBib released together and putting it up on a server really qualifies as 'imaginative modding' though.

I'm sure he put a lot of work into it, and the idea of a hub is great.

No players go to PlanetQuake?

And I feel that people should know about all mods, I can dream, can't I?

Eh....there are those that would put a damper on that Frika : (

I once dreamt of Quake Radio endorced Oatmeal, but that's all behind me now...

I like hub a lot, but merely because it's taken the "graphical chatroom" aspect of FvF and put it in a place.

I am missing the model '*3' and thus can't join that server?!

edit: nevermind, my bad. Had a "-game" in the shortcut.

I don't see anything special nor useful in this mod? Just some fun stuff.

Ah, don't lose sight of the things that interest the average Quake player.

Most players seek a fun content to their gaming, an element that is hard to describe or put into words.

When I connected there were 7 players including myself at a server basically few know about and a couple of them hung around there for over an hour (the all-servers page at quakeone has a mouse-over showing the names of who is there and the length they have been connected).

I was amazed when I went there, not in a way I could easily describe, but you don't often connect to a server with players bouncing around on a trampoline, a couple playing at improvised arcade machines and having to go on a mini-quest for an Ogre with two knights with crossed-swords blocking an entrance.

In my experience, it is a rather small percent. Maybe 5-10%, but possibly even lower.

I can remember back in 2003 when Chuck, who was one of the more important admin types in our community, posted screenshots of Tenebrae and JoeQuake and most of us had no ideas what those were and were amazed. (despite the fact those news items were on the PlanetQuake page that same week).

The average player just connects to a server to play Quake when he or she gets home.

I guess those of us that are more involved/concerned/proactive about Quake frequently check the PlanetQuake page, but to the player who plays Quake because they like the game, they mostly just connect to a server and play and might not even visit a forum unless they have a problem they need help with.

10% is not none. Even lower than 5% is not none. None is none.
