I was wandering around and found myself on the Telejano site and it mentioned a mod called Conquest.
Of course, the site was dead. It looks like mod was by Wasat.
Does anyone know where this can be found?

Some other mod on the Telejano page called "USA Invade Kanada".

I go to download the first link, says 403 Forbidden. LOL Hey, let's host a file but not let anyone be able to download it!

And it says "File Not Found" ... and I'm thinking "no shit!" (you know, the file name is called "THELOST.ZIP" and this is a Quake mod, so I figure it is probably lost and would have been surprised if it worked.)
This is a little rant and it is out of character for me, but why the f*** would people invest probably hundreds -- if not thousands --- of hours in a mod only to flush it down the toilet. This looks like a quality mod.

Conquest was just a case typo by Tei

Ah, Kanada invades USA 2, that takes me back.
It's based on my own Defeat in Detail mod, Tei did a good job adding new units and effects etc.

And try finding any of my stuff on planetquake / fp. You can't. Because the fuckers deleted it all. Let's face it, the web is a shitty way of archiving stuff, and it's really not surprising that mods from a couple of years ago have suffered the same link rot as, well, everything else on the web. _________________ randomviolence - tactical combat boardgame |

I have already upload all of Wazat's mods to the Quake archive, where Conquest can be found.

also note that many and many of the telejano site pages are outdated, like 2003, and some things may be broken, so don't blame them if you think they're "hiding their work". These are OLD mods wtf.

Thanks but CheapAlert is a lot better at the witty posts -- let the pros do that
My interest is in archiving things and those that know my interests in, for instance, the Quaddicted archive, source codes and other things are aware of this ... thanks for your concern.

Actually, the web is a great way of archiving stuff. I consider Quake to be an excellent case study in the life-cycle of code, mods and other long term "support issues".
The mapping community doesn't lose maps very often. Recently events and concern have raised the priority of preserving the past and perhaps has identified issues for the future best "practices" (for lack of a better word).
In my community, we've got to see "closed source" mods have a destructive impact on the community when the author vanishes. As a result, there is a strong resistance to close source mods because they were discovered to be detrimental in the long term.
The lost mods issue particular concerns me because a ton more time and effort is invested in the mods than other things.
Do modders not do a good job preserving their work because modders are sloppy (I don't think this is so) or because the modding community lacked the infrastructure or community peer-pressure to cause authors to mirror their work?
In the mapping community, review sites in a way were a driving force (in my perception) and it appears the community itself had mentors or something of that nature to urge proper archiving/mirroring.
Basically, I think the mapping community had a better infrastructure.

I wasn't trying to be witty, I was trying to be sarcastic, on the basis that I'm one of those modders whose mods have disappeared off the Internet (twice now) through no fault of my own. It's a bit of a kick in the balls for you to declare that I'm not trustworthy when really it was MDQNet as-was followed by PlanetQuake that decided to delete my stuff.
Admittedly, TEAMShambler onwards there's a good record of the maps that came out, but I think that's more to do with the nature of maps compared to the nature of mods. It's very easy for maps to be declared "finished", and released, and thus reviewed and stored on the review site. Mods have not, for a long time, gotten to a stage where they are declared "finished" and left alone, mod authors are always tinkering. Which is why I think there's never been a decent mod review site that mirrors the mods from the author's own site. _________________ randomviolence - tactical combat boardgame |

Actually, it's very quite your fault why your site got kicked off, mainly because you did not implement at least one banner ad that the Gamespy community hosting requires, hence breaking their terms of service. _________________

There's a good number of reasons mods go missing. Most have been mentioned: there's been no archive or way to mirror anything first and foremost, secondly the changing web, and lack of review sites and 'completion' moniker.
I think there are a number of other reasons. Among which are that mappers often post maps as part of a larger portfolio that will also sometimes include maps for other games. As such, they've got much more vested interest in keeping the site up and functioning in the future - to show off and maybe land a mapping job. When people post mods, due to the fact no one but modders play mods, it's more just simply telling their friends to get this mod they made. As a result it's a pretty transient thing, friends get the mod, play the mod, a good time is had by all.
Quake mods don't have the resume power a sucessful map might have, so one would not really have that much interest in continuing to promote it after they've moved on to 'better things'.
As far as open source, I agree. But there's little call to open source single player mods. |

I was voicing my emotion of the moment. Quake is overall a pretty messed up place overall. And I wasn't trying to get anyone riled up, although at that particular moment I was thinking "this is so typical of Quake."
It's not just modders, seems like everyone EXCEPT mappers haven't historically had their act together.
Last year I was meandering around QuakeWorld sites looking to round of some cool weapon models and textures (and digging through CheapAlert's mod cache).. and I did get a lot of help from some great guys, but I wondered why on earth that great stuff was so hard to find.
Then I brought my big weapons cache of accumulated stuff back to the Besmella site and many of them hadn't seen much of it before. I found that rather surprising. But everyone was happy I did it.

You know, I wish there were mod reviews somewhere other than the handful at Quake Terminus. Before getting a list of mods from LordHavoc, I'd ask "What are some cool mods for DarkPlaces?" and get some blank stares.
In fact, I don't know much about very many mods, probably because there were not centralized review sites promoting them with information casually available for whoever stumbles upon it.
Btw: the mod search at moddb.com sucks. I probably ought to be proactive and tell them (no real point voicing it here, I guess).
