I was interested in reading about some people working in the game industry who started off making mods, and was wondering if anyone in this area of the world had done so?

I recommend. Making some mods give you stuff to show in your portfolio. But modding is more fun than working in some big business, since modding don't create so big stress about doing it everyday, doing it really good and has less strict deadlines. So modding is more peaceful and relaxing thing to do. Then again it's just about attitude to the work. Today's been a good day, I managed to have an attitude that I don't care if I accomplish anything in time. Maybe I'm getting used to it then.

I've been working in the industry for about a year. I agree with Jim, if you love making mods, it's probably a good idea NOT to get into the industry. Something about working at a game company on game code just kinda sucks the life out your own projects. Your favorite hobby seems like an extension of your job. If on the other hand your modding career is winding down and you have no self esteem whatsoever then the game industry might be for you!

Seconded.

Keep in mind that lots of people from the Quake community got jobs back in the early days, but these were the people who were only interested in Quake for where it could get them (they are the people that would have moved on to Quake II when it came out, etc.) They are the people who, if they were born 8 years later, would be working on a HL2 mod that never gets anywhere.
