It is true though, just look at the source code for both engines.
Listen, we are trying to help you here. But it's becoming increasingly futile if you just won't listen to what we're telling you. The basics are:- Quake II is actually a lightly modified Quake(World) engine.
- The two engines have far more in common than they do different.
- Anything that can be done by the Quake II engine can also be done by the Quake engine.
- All the examples you have given are relating to content, not to the engine.
I'm not telling you that your opinion of and preference for Quake II's content is wrong; it is your opinion and you're entitled to it. It's just that if you're only starting it's better to start with a correct understanding of what you're talking about, otherwise you'll end up making far too many mistakes, get frustrated, and possibly give up.
And that would be a shame, because it's great to see somebody so enthusiastic, OK. _________________ DirectQ Engine - New release 1.8.666a, 9th August 2010

i know, i know.
its still a bigger difference in detail thought. and thanks for the non-negative post, its not really easy to write in a different language and describe things correctly in the correct form, and im sure that some words i said dont exist.
this should be a project, bringing Quake II to read the Quake progs.dat... i mean really working, not only in code like:
"hehe now the game tries to load the progs.dat, it crashes but im sure you know how challenging it was"
nevermind that.
i already worked for many mods and game on several engines, so the only problem here is the actual discussion/opinion problem here. but i think i should not start one "Join me and create the most interactive game ever" topic here because of the many negative reactions when people see me here. yup O_o _________________

Well, I was referring to Irritant who does the coding for Alien Arena which is a free game based on the Quake 2 engine.
http://icculus.org/alienarena/rpa/
Hence, when I was saying the guy with the Quake II based free game isn't agreeing with you, that's not good

Help! You see, there is this guy ... in this one thread ... and he's like not reading the posts and stuff ...
I'm kidding around a bit, but I think you are missing what these guys are telling you. _________________ Tomorrow Never Dies. I feel this Tomorrow knocking on the door ...

Eh? Who cares?
Where else can you find such a stacked deck of uber-elites and truly very, very new modders?
Almost the perfect formula for quality discussions where someone is destined for an Alamo/Waterloo type of experience.
Especially since I clearly am neither anywhere near uber-elite nor very, very new ... being able to relate to both sides. _________________ Tomorrow Never Dies. I feel this Tomorrow knocking on the door ... |

just wanna say that thats the only problem here in this thread, and we should forget all this posted before. im already on low health here, when now comes a shambler (this means a new big discussion, based on this you Baker started now) its over.
and that i will work on this, because im alreay IN the Quake 2 modding, and with the current progress there is no way back O_O _________________

I'm sorry, I am having a really hard time to understand what's going on here. First, you created a poll asking about Quake 2 modding potential - and we pretty much agree that almost any Quake base game engine HAS this potential. Then, you try to proof - without success - that Quake 2 is a better option over Quake. What are you trying to achieve here ? I am really confused. _________________ frag.machine - Q2K4 Project

Regarding QuakeC for Quake2:
I've wanted to see Quake2 get QuakeC for the longest time now.
I personally believe that if Quake2 were to get QuakeC / progs.dat, it would do wonders for revitalizing the Quake2 Community. _________________ "Roboto suggests Plasma Bazooka." |

Are you saying that you cannot load http://red.planetarena.org ? What browser are you using? You could always go to http://www.moddb.com/games/alien-arena-2008 and there you can see a Quake II based engine that has per-pixel lighting, soft shadows, skeletal models, etc.
Like many have said, all the engines have pretty much unlimited potential if you're willing to learn and put in alot of time to reconstruct their rendering and other aspects. If an advanced renderer is what you are after and want to start from scratch, then I'd recommend Quake III. If you're just looking to make a mod on an advanced renderer, then I'd suggest just using an engine that's already had the work done on it. _________________ http://red.planetarena.org - Alien Arena

This would be an great idea, but recoding all this in QuakeC will take alot time, the NPC code i think... hmm the weapons arent hard to make i think, and the NPC's not special too. hmm i think its able to realize.
@frag.machine the poll was not about Quake II modding in general, the point was the engine, wich has would be better to modify than Quake One because of the filesystem, i mean with ref_gl.dll and whatever, you have better control of the things you do with this. as example implenting physics, this would be very bad in quake because you haveto do alot in the qc code. but this is an bad example for this i think, because there is no engineside REAL physics code for Quake, and noone knows how it wil work then. _________________

Quake 2 with Quake-C?
Isn't that more like QuakeWorld with MD2 and Q2BSP support? z_z |

tenebrae2 quake1 with quake3 bsp's not exactly the same but maybe helpfull for some hints site has been dead for many years now but the source is still on sourceforge.
and spike's engine is a good resource also, and maybe closer to making qc work on quake2.
one thing im not to sure about is that vanilla quake1 source could actually be built for Q2 but how well it worked and if the qc code worked when compiled that way i havent the faintest. |

Bonus points if unmodified client can connect and play on a progs.dat driven Q2 server _________________

no, i mean inside 3d forum, i had style sheet errors (same problem on garrysmod.org) but this happens only when im in the school with my father (school pc's with firefox), im now back at notebook , works fine. im using firefox here too.
and i played Alien arena, it has really awesome effects and looks beautiful.
i know this with the engine, its like from Quake 1 upto id tech 4 or from Quake 1 upto Source. but we all havent reached the standard from today yet, there are no ragdoll physics, wich will be replaced with naturalmotions euphoria i think in the next years.
ragdolls became to a standard. and Quake II is way better to enhance i think, and you, the quake gurus, must know if its true i think.
and Downsider, it has todo with Quake II, so wen wanna that this game supports it, its easier when we use Quake II as base for this.
@leileilol
i was such an idiot, just forgot that Q2 has clientside code, why replace CS code with serverside code... lol. _________________

Connectivity with Quake protocol 15 is non-related to QCVM support (unless you're considering compatibility at network messages level).
IIRC Daikatana is a Quake 2 engine that does suport progs.dat. Maybe someone should bug Romero about releasing its source code. _________________ frag.machine - Q2K4 Project
