Like the topic says, when is everyone guessing will doom3(idtech4) become GPL, and will any members of this community work with that code if it is?

Probably in a few years, and probably not; we mostly like Quake.

I'd expect not until well after the next game, it would be very odd if a current engine was GPL'ed.

The only value I can see in working on the engine is to strip it back so it would run on lower end hardware. Far more fun to be had in pushing Q1 to it's limits.

ok, but isnt doom3 just like quake3 but in c++? and with more features of course. Maybe adding more stuff to it would be great.

Not really.

The front-end stuff of Doom 3 was rewritten in C++, but I understand from various sources that at least the back-end rendering code (and possibly also the server) are still in C.

The original Doom 3 test work was a hacked up Q3A; as time went on the code was extensively rewritten so that it really could be considered a new engine.

There's plenty about this on various .plans, blogs, etc if you want to go looking.

I'll go out on a limb and say a year after Rage is out, maybe two. Keep in mind what held the Q3 source release back - just *how* many people have purchased a license for the D3 engine?

As for doing anything with the code, I don't know.. I'm not an engine coder. :)

Ah ok, I'll find more about it, thanks for your info. Hmm, I think d3 release won't take as long as q3a did, since no one is buying d3 licenses, and most likely no one will either until Rage is released. Razz
