Maybe. But "evile" usually (here anyway) describes something moderately evil but also sort of adorable.

Perhaps there is something adorable about offering unconstructive criticism of a mod with someone's Windows screensaver as the logo.

Still, I object to that on moral grounds and if that logic doesn't hold then I object on immoral grounds, whatever that would mean. Laughing

And I feel that if someone could explain in detail the meaning of my possible latter objection that the universe would be a somewhat better place ...

Vile sounds like a fun word!

I agree. While I perfectly understand the reasoning behind the ironic comments, modding should be always about having fun and learning. It's very likely that this mod won't ever see a public release (as many others) but as far people doing it learn something during the process - either programming, modelling, mapping, or simply how to (or not ?) manage a creative team - and they have a good time doing that, it's worth the effort.

That's all good and fun, but not when this guy is making those who are actually good at what we do look like shit, or should I say shite?

You've got to see it from my perspective. "Oh hai cod4 zombes master chef and princess peach vs solid snaek" is what people read when I present my original game concept to them on the PSP.

If your doing it for fun and learning, who cares about your image to people who read like that.
Not to mention games like Solitude which is a Halo copy, don't help your cause. It just adds to the tweeners giddying with excitement over how amaz0rs Halo is. (No offense to the makers of solitude, I'm sure the quality of your stuff is great)

There's a difference between a quality tribute to a decent game and a shit carbon copy.

None taken. If I've learnt anything, it's to never, ever make a clone of a game. Sure it's all fun and games to start off with, but it's to limiting for my liking. Besides, no matter how good the quality of work, people still look at it like a piece of shite for being a clone.

That's mainly why the newer Solitude stuff is drifting away from halo.

Now you don't see that on marines when you accidentally shoot them point blank in the face in halo do ya Wink

A tribute, in my opinion, should focus in at least one of the main concepts behind the original product, and add something new and different to them, as to make them stand out from these differences, and prove how influential they may be even when apart from the original product.

The intent behind any tribute should be to show how awesome those main concepts can also be from a different perspective.

One of my favorite examples is Sonic Robo Blast 2. It is not just a Sonic-inspired game, it's a game that proves how cool a Sonic game can be in 3D while still being faithful to Sonic's 2D roots. It gets the idea that Sonic's 2D roots can still be a good influence to 3D gaming, and gives something back to that idea by using this influence in a 3D game.

It doesn't just reproduce a concept, it transforms this concept into something new to give back; it actually pays a tribute. Qake would also be a good example.

Carbon-copy games are, in my opinion, just egoistical attempts at showing that the level of talent of their authors is getting on par with the level of talent of the original game's authors.

I couldn't agree more, and I love the shift from clone to something of its own. I have no qualms whats so ever with what mk described, I in fact think their pretty fun. A lot of games have something that just sparkles in it, and being able to enhance that with something new and creative is great.
