What is good about OpenQuartz?
For example, at the moment, only consider multiplayer components.
Player model and sounds. Runes. Vore ball that is often used a hook spike? Rune keys?
Is OpenQuartz good enough for multiplayer only use. Basically, if single player were entirely written off, based on conversation here, are the multiplayer components good enough and fully compatible with the original Quake? And I guess we are talking about weapon models here as well, including the v_ ones and projectiles.
Just wondering? |

I guess what I am thinking is can pak0.pak be successfully rebuilt from existing free/GPL'd-ish components?
I'm not talking about the maps here. Custom maps using non-ID textures should exist aplenty.
Apparently this is an option in skulltag, after doing some homework. |

why don't you play it and find out
The good thing about OpenQuartz is the fact it is Free Software. _________________

That was more to absorb than I expected.
It must have been quite a deal of effort to get that project so far. I notice it looks like it was discontinued in 2004, I assume maybe due to Nexuiz.
I'll have to dig into the paks and explore it some more.
I think for now I'm going to pursue a dual track method, all of the separate pieces are currently distributed elsewhere. However, as FrikaC said, we (not any of you guys) are in an off-white area and I'd rather operate in a full-white area. I was thinking that maybe assembling a synthetic pak0.pak might not be too difficult, maybe it is or maybe not.
I may end up trying to track down some authors of models and sounds and see if they are willing to contribute them to the OpenQuartz project.
If a GPL pak0.pak can easily be assembled, that is preferable. Who knows, maybe it would even be cooler.
I think I can now better appreciate the efforts of things such as OpenQuartz and Nexuiz and the mountains of difficult work that went into that. I never thought of these things before, I'm not naive but I wasn't thinking about the level of detail.
I've always been an Open Source kind of guy because of all these little nattering neybobs, the xCTF source is downloadable off our site even though the parent source code didn't require anything like that.
I've always felt that without open source, things die. Little did I realize all the little innuendos (sp?).
Are there any issues with the Quake progs.dat? There were some references in there, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it. |
