Okay, I'm totally digging Urre's TIGSource site and I bumped into a collection of Youtube videos by a guy called laffer85, such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUoJBerFDsA
The idea is to cram (in a pretty exciting way and with cool, pumpin music) videos of 100 games of a particular platform in a 10 minutes video.
Now, wouln't it a big way to advertise Quake1 modding to set up such video? Do you think it would be possible? Which mods should be included?

Well there's certainly enough mods out there to make such a list, only problem being that they're mods. Meaning, in other words, how is it people who watch are going to see the imminent difference between one mod vs another mod, seeing as they're all based on brown ol' Quake? It could be done certainly, using clever thinkage and good picking of mods, along with good editing (making sure there's atleast a change of scenery between mods, to really point out that a new mod is being presented). Seeing as such a video is mostly about presentation, I doubt it'll be a great hit, seeing as most Quake mods are about new gameplay.

Although being as pessimistic as I am about it, I'd love to see such a video. I'd be jumping up and down slightly in my chair, excited to see what mod turns up next. I'm only pointing out that whoever does this, should think about presentation.

Some mods/games from the top of my head which need to be shown:

    Team Fortress
    Zerstörer
    Nehahra
    Prydon Gate
    The Ascension of Vigil
    Codename Corporal
    Defeat in Detail 2
    Nexuiz
    Airquake
    Painkeep
    Tanx
    Battlemech
    Miniracer

I could list more.

Add to the list the classics, like rocket Arena and CTF. They are a must have IMHO.

My "notable not-as-quakey" picks:

Hovercraft
Kickflip
Roids
Killer Quake Pack (probably a scene of an arrow shooting off while an airstrike and a nuke is going off with portals on a couple walls)
Quake Rally
Quess
Wrasslin'
GenClasses (overlooked very polished class-based mod)
Fiend Hunter (a nuke exploding, while firing a flamethrower?)
Starship Troopers: Tactical Defense (Get #qc to cooperate for this one)
Volleyball (Ditto)
Versus
Future vs Fantasy
Bloodmage
Lunkin's Journey (You bet TIGSource will love the whole "ITS INDIE PLATFORMER" thing going on here)
Navy SEALs Quake TC
PerQuake
Malice
After The Fall
X-MEN: Ravages of Apocalypse
Soldat Quake
Open Quartz (Yes, THAT one)
Fantasy Quake: Rise of the Phoenix
Quakemon
Kurok
Paroxysm
Horror Show
UltraQuake
Battle of Wits

That would be awesome. I thought about doing something like it with maps but I cannot imagine the amount of work it would be.

Maybe define a certain resolution and settings and let people upload uncompressed/lossless videos of it? You'd be welcome to use the Shub-Hub for this (I'd just make a new folder). Darkplaces has great and easy capturing capatibilities, I just dunno if it will run all mods. Well, for a short clip it should surely work!

As for "pointing out a new mod is shown", how about simply displaying its name in a corner? I really missed that in those videos.

I really should stop doing this, but I just have to point out that DP *should* work with all mods. Some mods which have been bugged from the get-go, and working in Quake only by chance, whereas the bugs being fixed in DP "breaks" these mods, have been fixed by LH himself and uploaded to the DP website. I'm thinking mainly TargetQuake, but there might have been more.

I vote DP too.

And yes please do display the name. Youtube supports displaying short messages embedded into the video at specified spots, so they don't suffer from the compression.

Yeah, I guess it are hacky or "broken" mods that cause trouble.
I just tried, 15 seconds of 400x300 take about 70 MB. That is ok for uploading snippets.

Cool, thanks for that nostalgia blast. I vividly remember like 90% of all those games. Smile

As for a Quake mod counterpart - why not. But as Urre said the mods should be indeed easily recognizable as mods, so TCs and PCs with very different content/gameplay have to be the main focus. I doubt you'd get 100 really distinct mods, but who said the video has to follow the 100/10mins formula strictly. Besides, while six seconds were enough to recognize each of those Amiga games, it might be too short for some of the Quake mods.

The video did have embedded name tags, btw.

negke: Some of the other 100games/10min videos didn't, but yeah.

I think we should start with having a look at if we can even think of 100 worth-displaying mods, before judging. Start listing, people!

CocoT: seeing as you started the thread, wanna edit your post with an updated list of mods people have mentioned, every now and then?

Something which makes this video worthwile is the fact that many now popular and taken-for-granted gamemodes/games were originally invented as mods for Quake. I'm looking at you, CTF and TF.

Sure, I can do that Smile
Here are a couple more, just on the top of my head (and yes, I'm pimping my own stuff Razz) ... there is probably a lot more I'm simply forgetting about. I think hitting the 100 mark is going to be pretty easy...

Quake1 Arena
Nehahra
Stars Wars : Dogfighting
Kanada Invades USA
Transfusion
Tanx
Bulldog Stadium
Darsana
FrikaC's Arcade mod
Panzer
Arcade Quake
Feral
Drake/Dragons
Prophecy
Spacewalk
Transloquake
Ultimate Quad Capture

I really like the idea of people posting videos they make on the shub-hub. They should of course try to compress (divx?) them to make them not too big. If named according to the name of the mod, it'd be easy to see the ones we have and the ones we still need. ... then someone with a fast computer (that is, not me) and good video-editing skills could put it all together Smile

Am I correct in saying that each mod would get 6 seconds worth of airtime, if we are aiming for the 100 mods in 10 minutes mark?

http://shub-hub.com/index.cgi?action=listfiles&path=%2fquake100clips

Video encoding is no mystery (unless you go anal about it).
We would just need to decide on a resolution and settings

It would be good to use the same color settings in DP, I'd suggest no chances, gamma of 1). No fancy lighting, no crosshair(?), fov 90, etc. For the resolution I would suggest 400x300. That's what for example Youtube uses.

For the video I propose
-H264, 2-pass average bitrate of 1000kbps
-MP3, Joint Stereo, VBR/ABR of 96kbps
-MP4 container
That would be ~1MB per 6s snippet.

If everyone uses the same then I think one could simply glue all snippets together in the end. (Reencoding looks fine too!)
But again, I would be fine hosting the "huge" videos straight from DP, space is no issue at the Shub-Hub.

If Darkplaces' video is in weird colours, "swap chroma U and V".

Yay! We're doing this, we're doing this! Very Happy
/me dances around

And I totally go along any format you're proposing, Spirit. I think the 1 meg file sounds the best.

Wait, let's make that 640x480, 4000kbps for video and 128kbps for audio. That would end up with ~250MB for the full movie. Or does anyone have a better suggestion? Technical video things are melting brains whereever they can.
I am not sure how Youtube will "destroy" it though. But there are other better sites anyways.

I uploaded some random examples at http://shub-hub.com/files/temp_100quakeclips/
The ones with 2000 in the filename are 400x300 with 2000kbps video. The ones with 4000 are 640x480 with 4000kbps.
The "append" ones are the two clips simply glued together.

http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ is a great free tool to cut and encode videos. I'll write a short guide for it once we settled the settings.

PS: Cocot, you are full of great ideas and getting things rolling!

I'm pleased to see that some of my favorites are listed, including some of my mods. Yay! Very Happy

BTW, Conquest & Ace of Nails both have features that are pretty enough that they might be included. Conquest especially makes use of things like Spark Lightning that are going to show well (see: Tesla Bomb). If you had a mech firing its railguns at the player and showing his shields flash to block it (or something similar), I think that would show of a lot of what the mod is about. Another option is to imitate this image, with the plasma arc traveling past some enemies and zapping the hell out of them. Very Happy

Another of mine to consider is Final Fantasy Tactics Quake. It's a very incomplete tech demo, but it may be cool to show off. However, considering we have so many very viable candidates, I'd hate to push out a more complete mod to show off FFTQ.

As for stuff that isn't mine (I'm being way too narcissistic talking about my own stuff only anyway):

If we could show off Rune Quake nicely that would be a good addition. I also agree with showing off Nexuiz as it is Quake1 based, and something to be proud of. Very Happy It also displays well. Although, they've moved on to Quake3 I think.

Archmage, if no one's mentioned it yet, though it's an old, old mod. It's still cool to see your hands move and launch a fireball. Smile

It's too bad we have only 6 seconds per mod. Many of these deserved at least double that to really show off. However, too long a video would not be good.

This is a great idea! Cheers!
