======================================================== LinuxXDoom FAQ v0.6 by (roland@cac.washington.edu) with the help of the regular gang of #linux idiots Additions? lemme know. Save us alot of pain online. ======================================================== WARNING: if you are at school and are getting plenty of work done, you do _not_ want to download this program YES LINUX DOOM FOR X IS REAL YES LINUX DOOM FOR X IS REAL YES LINUX DOOM FOR X IS REAL YES LINUX DOOM FOR X IS REAL @: Where is it? A: sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/Incoming sphinx.biosci.wayne.edu:/pub/? infant2.sphs.indiana.edu Q: Does it work? A: Hell yes, you need at _least_ a 486dx/33 to play it well, and 8 megs of memory or more is a definate plus. And of course, you need Xfree86 installed and running. Q: Does it come with source code? A: duh. The source is available where you found the source to Windows 3.1, System 7.5 and Autocad: suckers.vapour.com (127.0.0.1) Q: Will linux doom load my other .wad files? A: Yes. LinuxXDoom will use any wadfile later than 1.2, patched or unpatched, registered or shareware. LinuxXDoom is reported to work on the Doom ][ wads, but that is not possible to test SINCE DOOM ][ HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED. Q: Does LinuxXDoom allow network play? A: Yes. Up to for players on a tcp/ip network can play! (i.e. the whole fricking Internet). Q: Is LinuxXDoom's netplay compatible with dos IPX? A: No. Q: What resolution is best for LinuxXDoom? A: 320x200 is optimal, but not every chipset can run X at this resolution, so the smaller the better. 640x480 is a nice resolution. (see timings below) Q: Does LinuxXDoom have sound support? A: Yes. If you have a 16bit sound card it will. The sound support includes sound effects only, no music. Q: Can I suppress the sound? A: Yes. Rename 'sndserver' or remove it from your path. Q: I don't get any sound, what's wrong? A: Make sure the sndserver binary is _IN YOUR PATH_ or pwd. Q: Does netplay work over term? A: No. Not compeltely. Netplay uses udp datagrams, which term doesn't fully support. Rumor has it that it partially works. Q: How to I netplay? A: here's an example: Lamer 1 (you), ip: 1.2.3.4 Lamer 2, ip: 2.3.4.5 Lamer 3: ip: 3.4.5.6 context: linuxxdoom -net 1 [lamer2's ip] [lamer3's ip] hence: linuxdoom -net 1 2.3.4.5 3.4.5.6 lamer2 types: linuxdxoom -net 2 1.2.3.4 3.4.5.6 lamer3 types: linuxxdoom -net 3 1.2.3.4 2.3.4.5 Q: Can I play with my mouse? A: Yes, use the -grabmouse flag when starting Q: How do I work my ~/.doomrc? A: snd_channels can be modified up to at least 8 to improve quality. maybe even adds music - I don't know keymappings can be changed from the default (am working on a setup program to automate this as per dos doom). mb_used ??? Amount of shared mem it grabs? screenblocks ?? Everything else is straight forward. Q: How can I use alt / ctrl / shift and arrow keys without changing the window focus? A: In fvwm, comment out all references to keyboard shortcuts at the end of ~/.fvwm which alter the behaviour of alt / ctrl. If you haven't got a ~/.fvwmrc, > cp /usr/X11/lib/X11/fvwm/system.fvwmrc ~ and edit that. Similiarly for other window managers ie mwm. ERROR MESSAGES: Error: Game mode indeterminate FIX: Make sure there is a wad file in your pwd, and that it is called 'doom2.wad'. Symlinks will work fine.
