Title : Weapon Leech Filename : leech.zip Version : 1.0 Date : 9/25/97 Author : Scytale Email : bryancreel@worldnet.att.com Type of Mod ----------- HexenC : yes Sound : no MDL : no Format of HexenC ---------------- unified diff : no context diff : no .hc files : no (if you want them, email me) progs.dat : yes Description of the Modification ------------------------------- When I started playing Hexen II, I thought the 'powered-up' weapons with the Tome of Power were just too awesome to only be able to use when you had the short-lived Tome. This mod allows you to power up your weapons, but at a cost - it leeches away your experience points. The cost is also cumulative, so the first time you throw the Crusader's hammer with leeching on it costs nothing, then 1 XP, then 2, 3, 4, and so on. This progression is reset to zero when you gain another level. I think this makes the patch reasonably balanced, because it you use it too much you will never get the XP needed for a new level and resetting the cost. Firing any missile weapon while leeching is on counts as a use and deducts XP from your total. Melee weapons only deduct if you hit something destructible like creatures or barrels. The one exception to the rule is the Crusader's Sunstaff, since it fires a continuous beam rather than individual shots. I just set it to deduct XP continuously while the weapon is in use without increasing the cumulative cost (you would be very quickly in the negatives otherwise). If you have some ideas for the next version, let me know. I was thinking of not subtracting mana costs while leeching is on since the XP costs are pretty stiff anyway. But that might be a game balance problem, especially in deathmatch. I also may add the ability to turn artifacts with a duration on and off, and show a remaining time. Like, you could toggle the Tome on and off until you used up the total time in the artifact. How to Install the Modification ------------------------------- To use the progs.dat, go to your HexenII base directory. Make a subdirectory and call it what you will. Try "leech", for example. Then run HexenII adding "-game leech" to the command line. Impulse 50 will toggle leeching on and off, so you should bind it to a key from the console with a command like . When leeching is off, all weapons act normally. If it's on, they act just like you had the Tome of Power artifact active. BUGS ---- I think most are worked out, but you may want to keep an eye on you XP just to make sure nothing funny happens. But I tested all the weapons and they seem to work correctly.
