In the vein of nails, nailguns, 'Nine Inch Nails', Jesus Christ crucified and death/black metal, this album of 'Samael' - 'Ceremony of Opposites' - is pretty iconic, even though not entirely my kind of vibe.
I think that soundtracks for gaming - in a way like soundtracks for movies - unnecessarily do mean the same as club music, dance music or music made for listening, especially contemplative listening or a kind of listening that requires understanding, maybe certain mood to be in.
I think that the music and sounds of the environment should not be so aggressive and fast. There are a lot of atmospheric tracks in the modifications and I change them periodically. Unfortunately I don't like the original NIN tracks for the game for the above reason.
But this is my opinion. If you like to run and shoot to this music in the game, then do it and enjoy. I sometimes do that too, but rarely. ))))))
I just don't like Death metal. The music may be good, but the hoarse and roaring voices of the vocalists of the songs are something terrible! I like Industrial more. But this is again my opinion. ))))))
@'haiduk', your av brings me certain vibes; have you listened to Antichrist by 'Gorgoroth', for example?
Vein of 'Quake 2' soundtrack, rather than 'Quake', in my opinion.
True. I'm more of a fan of ambient, Quake 1 style soundtracks when gaming. But faster stuff is good too.
Fans of NiN and metal, check out the new Haiduk album Diabolica [death metal]

Have you heard about an artist called 'Lustmord'? I wonder how would his work, sound, if involved with 'Quake'.
I have been using the alternative soundtrack, promoted by 'Greenwood' on his 'Youtube' channel, for some time now and I find the option very satisfying; I would dare say it is nearly as fitting as the eternal 'NIN'. Perhaps, the alternative would still use some minor tweak - the search, is not over - but altogether, it creates a very solid ambiance in the 'Quake' gameplay.

Sorry, typo "EpiQuake"

I use the soundtrack from that package.

What do you mean?
The sound quality is bad, muffled, like South Park Kenny talking.
It is because the content was de-emphasized. Quake CDs had flag "pre-emphasis" set to 1, which means the devices on playback would de-emphasize (roughtly speaking, attenuate high frequencies) the music content. The music on Mac CD is already "muffled", like it was recorded from the output of the CD player.
This debate is still not settled, however... Because the first official Quake Soundtrack released in 2020 by NIN has no de-emphasis. But then again, where's the guarantee that Trent used the original proper files and it's not just CD master reissued on 2xLP?
What is "epicquake"?
"in the wild"
Mind that soundtracks, mostly, can be played and shared without the base product context.
That is the reason i am kicking the soundtrack out of my package now. I will use the soundtrack from Epicquake as substitute for the next time until i find something more suiteable. At least there are several soundtracks in my package to choose from as an option and a short how-to get to the legal owned soundtrack playable into the quakespasm mod folder.

That is a funny thing, if to think about it. Do you think it is an argument, legally speaking of the Internet sharing culture? In my opinion, it is morelike a question of resources - it is the question of: how efficiently can you deal with one instance at a time, each time there is a need to?
To conclude my stance in this discussion: I am against anything illegal, as well as, I would not fancy taking risk with things of unclear legal status, long term perspective.
When it comes to the custom content, sharing base game assets - as long as one does require the base game, to run the custom content made for that game; if the custom content is not-for-profit, it is basically an addon to the game, made for free, therefore it does not pose any competition or potential profit drain.
