Music while playing

Hi guys,
What kind of music do you guys listen to while playing Quake?
I listen to hardcore dubstep. What about you?

Honestly ... I usually still stick with the classic soundtrack.

Ditto. Unless there's a specific new track that goes with a specific map, I stick with Trent. His music is such an integral part of Quake's ambience that it's a real shame to replace it with anything else. When playing the mission packs, I do sometimes use Xolve's music that he released with his Epsilon build, because it's really good and I hate Sonic Mayhem's generic crap.

Re: Music while playing

I've been playing custom Quake maps since 2004 and never had the need to replace Nine Inch Nails tracks with anything else - there was a time I used to put the CD in the drive everytime I wanted to play, since the engines back then did not have .mp3 support.

One time I went for ripping all the official/unofficial stuff out there to try them out: Jeehun Hwang's SoA/DoE tracks, Methods of Destruction, Abyss of Pandemonium, Shrak and Malice, Ravages of Apocalypse as well as Travail. Then I realized I didn't long for them much and scrapped the idea.

I think nothing fits Quake like Reznor's ambient tracks.

Been playing with the official Quake 64 soundtrack quite a bit lately. It's really growing on me.

Indeed the Quake 64 soundtrack is a hidden gem. The "Trouble Found Me/House of Chton" is probably the darkest track in all of Quake. Props to Aubrey Hodges for caring about a N64 port enough to make this soundtrack.

I play a lot of dark ambient when I map but usually play without music. Cryo Chamber is a great label for dark ambient music. Highly recommended. http://www.cryochamberlabel.com/

Ditto for this. I don't have any real attachment to the official NIN soundtrack, but Quake 64's is really good. I used to play with a rip of it, but unfortunately, I lost those files a while ago. I like that it's more noisy and percussive than the official one. When I play hipnotic, I use its soundtrack instead.

For unofficial music, before I used a source port, I used to play with Alice in Chains' Dirt in the drive. If you own a copy, I highly recommend it, it syncs up scarily well to the levels.

I usually stick with the original soundtrack unless the map has custom music, at which point I go with that instead.  On rare occasion I'll put Lustmord on in the background instead.

Lustmord! Perfect Quake mapping music for me too.

For me, the original soundtrack is a big part of the quake experience. It's embedded in the textures

I play with original soundtrack. Thank god the cd is no longer needed in the drive when playing with new Quake ports like darkplaces.

I do prefer the original soundtrack the most by far, but I also do mix it up from time to time. I like to go with some good old epic battle music occasionally.

The original Quake soundtrack is awesome. I often set it as background music when doing something.

By coincidence, The fat of the Land by the Prodigy. I still associate that album with Q1 and Vice versa.

I used to listen to this when I first discovered Quake 1 back in the early 2000s and still do. Great mix between gothic metal and ambient neoclassical. Very fitting.

Re: Music while playing

If you're tired of the original soundtrack for whatever reason, Death Cube K released several drone/ambient albums that fit Quake quite well, particularly "Disembodied":

Re: Music while playing

Even if i am tired of it, usually mappers chose tracks which fit the map in the way they intend it to play, so i chose to not add any new to play the map as it was intended first to see it how it really is. That and the maps which have sounds as an intended part of the gameplay, and external music would ruin them completely without no possiblity of realizing it which makes it worse.

Only when i have played the map before i sometimes put other music with it, so i will check what some of you have linked here.
