Quake versions and registration copies

If I am not mistaken, the first public release of Quake is shareware version 0.91, released in June 22. Meanwhile, I have heard from many places that 1.01 is what the full release came with. I find this confusing, for 1.01 was released about 20 days after that. What would you get if you ordered a registered copy in June 22, and why is 1.01 mentioned everywhere?
