Hi, I'm new

Hello! I'm new to the site as well as new to the game. The only game I had played in the series was Quake 4 and I didn't really think too much of it, honestly. I had heard before that the first Quake was awesome and had a modding community that was still active so I bought it the other day and was blown away. I've finished the game twice and just finished playing through Arcane Dimensions as well. I was looking at all the maps on here and I'm so excited to play more. (Also, I tried Q2 and it feels...off)

Are there any mods/maps you all would recommend me trying? As of now, I'm just going from newest to oldest, trying them all haha.

There's many to list and of course everyone will have their own favorites that will be different. There were also many releases that were some form of milestones that gave the influx of new stuff and influenced the following releases. It could be something ambitious and big like Nehahra or quite small in size like Honey.

Here's some footage... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGj4gXyCzg0
At 2:00 it's Arcane Dimensions, then at 3:29 it shows off other stuff. Of course, all worth playing releases could not fit in that video.

Hi milk!

I'm very much like yourself - wasn't around for Quake back in 1996, but came to the new modding scene via Arcane Dimensions and have been happily exploring the mapping scene ever since.

As Gila says, there are plenty of maps out there - but it doesn't hurt to give you some of my recent favs that I played after enjoying Arcane Dimensions.

Oxyblack Fortress is another map that runs off Arcane Dimensions (but not in the base download) - I think it's right up there with the best maps in the pack: https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/ad_heresp1.html

Dismal Signal, by the same author (Heresy) is a brilliant base map: https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/heresp5_rev.html

Comrade Beep has done a few maps based in AD that are well worth checking out:

If you're looking for a quality standalone campaign release, Dwell has a serious difficulty curve and lovely hellish/egyptian theme that oozes atmosphere - https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/dwellv1p2.html - you'll need to install it to a separate folder, however, it runs off Copper, not AD.

I really enjoyed: https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/xalanoth.html as a recent release (with more to come) that had a really fresh, neon take on the Quake aesthetic with tight gameplay.

Finally, for a brooding classic map, Sock (of Arcane Dimensions fame) has some great maps prior to AD - Midnight Stalker is a quality choice - https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/mstalk1c.html

Just some of my recent favs I think you'd enjoy based off Arcane Dimensions being your entry point.

In addition to some of the other recommendations in this thread, and in no particular order:

Underdark Overbright (2019) is a really good episode, which you'll need the Copper mod to play.

Menetettyjen Valtakunta (aka Realm of the Lost or smej) (2019) is an episode made by Finnish mappers, also in Copper (included in the download, but installed in a separate folder.) It can be brutally difficult at times, but all the maps are good. Make sure to download the 1.13 patch instead of the 1.0 version
https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/smej_1.0.html

Ceremonial Circles (2001) is not too impressive visually, but still one of my favourite standalone maps.

A Verdant Dawn (2020) is a relatively recent vanilla release. It's similar in scope to most AD maps. Lots of space to explore and secrets to find.

The Grim Outpost (2018) is an episode-2-themed journey of a map.
