The Quake Ironman League - The Parallel Worlds

Q Ironman League

What is the Quake Ironman League?

In the spirit of the DWIronman League, the Quake Ironman League has participants play a provided map, episode or mod blind to see who can survive the longest! Rules are at the bottom of the post. This month you all will be dying to...

The Parallel Worlds, a single-bsp episode by Digs. Utilizing skill settings and runes, Digs created an episode that can be played in a single BSP, and automatically ramps up in difficulty as it goes on. It starts off cruisy, and quickly builds into a slaughterfest perfect for competition. Being among the shorter multi-map sets suitable, this should work as a taste for what's to come. Tough maps, stiff competition and fun for all!

Difficulty: N/A (Map utilizes the skill setting for gameplay)
File(s): [digs04.bsp]
Mod: Vanilla Quake
Note: This map requires an engine port with increased limits.
Commands: The command "record qil1_playername digs04" will begin your attempt.

Rules
  • To compete, you must play the given map/mod/mapset once on the given difficulty setting and record a demo of your playthrough to submit to this thread.

  • Playthroughs must be blind. You are not permitted to practice or otherwise study the map before attempts are made.

  • Demo files must be compatible with Quakespasm Spiked source port. (Protocol 15, 666, or FTE999)

  • No cheat codes or other gameplay hacks may be used.

  • No mods or files other than those provided may be used.

  • If the recording of your run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be submitted.

  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the run having completed more secret levels than their competitors will rank higher than them.

Leaderboard
  1. Markie - Finished, 19 minutes.

  2. Koren - Finished, 22 minutes.

  3. Mazu - Finished, 23 minutes.

  4. H4724 - Map 3, ate a Shambler lightning bolt just before the finish.

  5. Synthamancer - Map 3, shambler victim #2.

  6. Shamblernaut - Map 3, slow and steady eats the lightning bolt. Shambler victim #3 (50 minute run!)

  7. Qmaster - Map 3, an unfortunate Shambler victim #4

  8. JoelB - Map 3, made short work of a Spawn... which was right under his nose.

  9. Bal - Map 3, yet another Shambler victim. #5

  10. Voidforce - Map 3, let a spawn sit on his head.

  11. Zothique - Map 3, hardly stepped foot inside map 3 before getting balls in the face.

  12. Lane Powell - Map 3, toyed with a vore and paid the ultimate price!

  13. Nostalgick - Map 1, faced the horde and was never heard of again.!

  14. Alekswithak - Map 1, experimented with an explobox.

grossly underestimated the hitbox size on a explosive box.  very short lived attempt.

Really love the idea, sadly I played this one on stream last week (here - obviously don't click if you're planning to compete) so can't compete this time - I didn't read the readme to work out what was going on beforehand so I was very confused initially :)

Well first I have to give the disclaimer that I played the map several months ago already, despite that there still are some tough moments that almost got me.

Died to a shambler at what seems to be the final fight on the skill 3 version of the map. 121/125 kills (FWIW that shambler killed a spawn after I stopped recording, bringing it up to 122.) I've included end screenshots for each completed map, as well as when I died.

I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to get to the silver key in the last part, so I just rocket jumped.

This was fun, and a good choice of map too. Switching to nightmare the third time around really threw me off, which made it really fun because of the whole no-saves thing. I'll have to go back and finish this map, and hopefully I can participate in the next one as well.

Lol that was a great attempt, but w/ the saves I don't think I can count it. Maybe I should up to the first death?

I think this is worth counting, it looked like you knew what was coming in that one specific moment - but the rest was very clutch. Loved that bit in the 2nd map.

Christ this one was clutch as hell, that finale catching you off-guard was hilarious. Hoping more people get snapped up by that one, as that was one of the main reasons I picked this map in the first place.
That and it's just a really good map on top of that.

Welp.  Close but no cigar.  Made it all the way to the last room and got shambler smashed.  Backspawning is evil.  Remember this lesson kids.

Good showing y'all, some great runs in there. Didn't expect to have such fierce competition. Might have to play a Smilesycthe joint later eh? :)
There's been some good discussion on Func as per rulings and so on, it'd be good to get more feedback on a proposed "Prepared" category where people who aren't blind can compete in a seperate leaderboard. Lemme know here!

Not sure if drinking Sazeracs along the way helped or hurt me...

Don't forget kids, sometimes you more weapons than you remember, and don't get into a bare knuckles fight with spawns, they hit hard.

I was a bit sad at missing out so I recorded a demo anyway - managed to finish but there was definitely a couple of bits I remembered so I def had an advantage: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jfoffo26ip4j9 … z.dem?dl=1

I had another go immediately after to see if I could find a few more secrets, and got killed by the very first fiend landing on my head :)

This was hard but I made it out somehow. The last fight was intensely cruel and almost got me.

Good showing, just edged out Mazu >:) Yeah, the last fight was mostly the reason i picked this one for the league, since finishing in one life is definitely a feat.

Cool idea!
Died towards the end, hadn't played this one before, it's great. Hopefully Digs sees all of this.

Poor showing I'm afraid, I tried something clever with voreballs near the beginning of map 3 and got hit pretty bad, then ate another voreball not too long after. I also took a while to finish map 1. I got close to the finish, then backtracked a bit to kill some monsters and got disoriented for a bit.

Good fun anyway, I hope I can participate in the next one.

Thanks for playing, y'all! Next Ironman starts now, and I'm sure it won't be as forgiving this time... >>> [Enjoy]
