Quake Surfing

I recently finished my first map, and for a cheeky secret there is a platform only accessible by surf jumping. So far I don't think anybody has discovered it without me hinting to them in conversation that they need to surf. I have been trying to find any other maps with surf elements, but haven't had any luck. It seems that this sort of thing is not common in Quake maps.

Does anyone know of other maps in which you can or need to surf?

Re: Quake Surfing

How does one execute this "surf jumping" in Quake?

Surfing, like in counter-strike or other source engine games. I made a little video to show how it's executed, I can share the demo if that helps.

Hold right and forward as you move in a swoosh shape, gradually down and then quickly back up along the sloped wall, then jump at the end.

Re: Quake Surfing

It looks like combination of slope jumping and wallrunning to me (though I'm not trick movement specialist). Slope jumping gives extra height when jumping on upwards slope. Wallrunning gives a speed boost when running sort of against and along a wall at a specific angle, which was present even in Doom.

Both are known quirks of the Quake engine, as well as many others like strafe running, strafe jumping, double jumping (appeared in Quake II), bunny hopping, and perhaps many more that I'm not aware of. I can't remember the names of the maps, but I remember a few instances that required advanced movement technique or two, usually to reach a secret area.

The reason why these movement quirks are present in Goldsource is perhaps because it's a based on (heavy modified, especially after HL1) Quake engine. Recently there was an article pointing out that even the most recent version of it (Half Life Alyx, among other games) uses the same light flickering pattern as original Quake!

Jesus Christ... you have to be a really crazy Quake fan in order to really learn all that. It requires A LOT of training, getting used to these tricks, not for casual player at all. Therefore these secrets are kinda unfair as long as usual player can't do that. But that's ok - Hell is unfair :D

It basically is. I found some more examples of this sort of thing with "slope jumping," so thanks for the search keyword!

I saw that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. lol

I think you'll find it's a lot easier than it looks! I do like the idea of secrets being... secret. I don't want everyone to find every secret. :)

Only map I can think off off the top of my head is hellhole by kukyye. The entire map is focused on trickjumps and a bit of surfing is need to get to the gold key platform.

Thanks for the recommendation. This is a tricky one, I'm going to have to work on my high speed jumping. lol

Re: Quake Surfing

I wouldn't worry about it because the few players who do discover it and manage to pull the surf off will feel great about it. I mean, it's a secret that requires fairly advanced movement so you can't really expect a lot of people to find it.
