Re: Didn't play Quake for 25 years...

"Bile Plant" ["warpb"] - a second map from the Warpspasm episode - is something I would recommend, for the amazing synergy of soundtrack and soundscape, as well as the moody, dystopian aesthetics.

It is a 'Quoth'-based release.

"Warpspasm" itself deserves a lot of praise, but it seems a flawed masterpiece; loosing momentum in progress, rather than gaining it.

Thanks. I'll play it (on Easy perhaps, since it's stated in the description that the pack is hard)

Have you already tried The Roman Wilderness of Pain? It is an episode of three large stages, featured in the aesthetic theme emphasizing classic architecture with "flesh" or "blood" intervowen. It also includes quite a few well-made, playable modifications. Fairly challenging, but not very difficult on "Normal" - notwithstanding, the last fight, feels out of sound reason; borrowing probably a bit too much from 'Doom'.

If you want to "play from the beginning of the Quake modding" and start with some "old" stuff: Beyond Belief, Zerstorer, Abyss of Pandemonium, Prodigy, Operation Ourth Majik, Rubicon, Soul of Evil, Descent, Rapture, IKSPQ, Terra

You may find it funny, but I do generally avoid playing anything pre-2000, when it comes to custom releases in the 'Quake' world and who knows, maybe even in the 'Quake' world altogether.

Understandably, you could ask: why is that? For the historical reasons, sure, I would - only that, I do not play for historical reasons. I play for my own leisure and these, simply do not amuse me as much; the criteria of comparison, have changed.

'Quake', is still the same game, but it is not really the same game as it was - and this, is the best about it.

I am here really for the creativity consumption, I think.

Cannot speak for the 'Alex Ros', who is the initiator of this thread.

Mentioned in this thread already, link here. From the 'Warpspasm' pack, there is roughly one map that I liked enough to replay it maybe one day; but it has some amazing soundtrack.

In playthrough, I am mostly a kind of a tourist - I rarely ever play anything twice; rarely do I ever push for finding secrets. I assume that if a map, has anything to offer, it is within the interest of a mapper, to present the relevant qualities of his creation in a feasible, accessible manner to the player.

If you like outdoors nature maps, I recommend you try Waldsterben by Paul Lawitzki for Copper, a gorgeous forest map.

As mentioned before, dont disregard Rapture just because its pre 2000, its awesome especially if you're into Castles and stuff
