ad_v1_70final.zip

Arcane Dimensions 1.70

Large-scale single player campaign with many new levels, some of them labeled as "test" maps, featuring a whole line-up of new monsters and items as well as several tweaks and changes to the gameplay. Furthermore, it is meant to serve as a tool box for level designers, offering a large number of modified and new things to use in custom-made maps. Map and QC sources are included.

This is version 1.7 which includes various bug-fixes, additional features, and two new maps in addtition to ad_sepulcher.

Note: These maps (and likely all subsequent maps based on AD) require a source port with increased limits as well as support for BSP2 and transparent textures. Quakespasm 0.93+ is strongly recommended.

This might be the best mod I've played for any game, ever. I got into the whole Quaddicted, Quake-injected backlog because of this. I've never seen anything like it.

The Slipgate Conundrum (ad_s1m1) is a pleasant re-imagining of our old friend E1M1, but in 2018 doesn't necessarily bring a great deal to the party. It's done about as well as such a thing can be done, but it's not really clear that it needed doing. (Especially as there are so many Original Quake levels that have never been remade, but E1M1 has been done over and over.)

The other new map here is Arcane Adamantine (ad_ac), billed as a collaboration between Dmitry Svetlichny and Simon "Sock" O'Callaghan. Given that Vodur's original Adamantine Cruelty was already by some distance the best sewer map out there, it will come as no surprise that this pretty faithful remake now takes that crown with something to spare. It's immensely satisfying to play, and the end-game (after discovering the surveillance posts) is a delight. I was really pleased with myself to end up with all 300 kills, though a bit frustrated to miss one secret: I never did figure out how to get the yellow armour from the pillar in the middle of the cistern room behind the silver-key door. (Can anyone help me?)

Anyway, this is as clear a five-star map as ever there was. Lovely.

Mike, without giving it away I'd tell you the trigger can't be any closer. It's an homage to a secret in the original map and will make a lot of sense when you find it.

Got it, thank you! The funny thing is, it's exactly the same secret as the map's very first one, which I did find. I am not able to happily say that I've 100%-percented Arcane Adamantium.

This mod is a must for any original quake player. Really shows how far this game can go without losing to much of the original aspects it brought to us back in 1996. Absolutely love the sheer size of some of the maps and the new (yet still authentic looking) textures are just amazing 👌

bug report: ad_test3 wont work on Easy, missing monsters cant activate some triggers I believe. (sorry i have to play easy due to minor handicap)

Folks, the truly awesome Leptis Magna is credited in ad_v1_70_readme.txt to Noel Lacaillade/Andrey Saenko. I've not been able to find any other maps by either of them. Can it be possible that this is their debut? If so, it's in the all-time top two maps by my count (along with Forgotten Sepulcher). Or are they veterans better known by aliases?

Well, I have 29 of the 30 secrets in Foggy Bogbottom. I know what the last one is: in the multi-level hall that contains the gold-key door, one level above and to the right of where that door is, there's a small wooden door which is locked. Inside it is a small room containing a shambler facing an altar that has a quad on it. (Yes, I noclipped to find that out. But I can't find the legitimate way to open that door.

Can anyone help?

Wow! I just discovered this map pack. It is wonderful! My wife saw me playing it and was like, "What's that!? That looks fun!" I was like, "it's Quake!" This has gotten me playing Quake as if it was 1996 all over again!

Arcane Dimensions is an absolute masterpiece. This is the real Quake 2, in my opinion. If you're going to play one mod or map pack, make it AD.

I already saw screenshots and playthrough of couple of maps from AD, but I still was amazed how good this is by playing it for myself. Lots of new monsters with different mechanics, awesome atmosphere, incredible detailing, lots of different themes, and of course gameplay... It's like a whole new game, and I don't remember the last time I had so much fun end enjoyment from playing game.

And I thought my Quake days were long since over. lol Brilliant work, guys. Played it for 6 hours straight last night and couldn't stop. Then I went to sleep and played it in my dreams. Yes, shit got weird.

OK, folks, I am playing The Mire for the fourth or fifth time, and I cannot figure out how to get the silver key out from the little underwater niche protected by the "worn, but still sturdy" bars.

Hint, anyone?

More precisely: I have found the first five secrets, in order (they announce themselves as "secret 1", "secret 2", etc.). I thought the way to get the silver key would related to finding the hidden fifth control wheel, raising the pressure past the required 10,000 PSI to 12,500 PSI — I hope that would make something explode, giving me access to the key. But it doesn't seem to have done so. Am I close?

MikeTaylor: there's another wheel you need to find, which will initiate the turbine shutdown. Once it's done, dive into the hot water basin (which is no longer hot), and the bars will be released, giving you access to the key.

I'd provide more detailed instructions but I'm having trouble finding my way in this map. I didn't really look hard for it though. Also, remember to look for breakable walls near the wheels you find.

Holy fucking shit. I've been playing shooters for a long time and let me say that this is FPS perfection. I see a lot of potential in the hub-based structure. I sincerely hope the creators will add more high quality maps (there is room on the upper level of the Forgotten Chapters hub). Furthermore, I think the Test hub deserves a facelift to bring it to the level of the other two. Lose the numbers in favor of something more stylish. Some of the test maps are full-fledged maps and even those are seriously better than any modern FPS.

the swamp map is the pinnacle of leveldesign, not getting lost and being able to navigate around this huge place is a wonder. the snow castle is just gorgeous, all these maps deserve 5 stars. hats off!!! the mod itself is what quake2 and 3 should have been, there is so much to discover, and the additions with all the new types jus work. big thank you to the makers! hope thers a update in the future. What a fantastic mod. I love the ambiance, breakables and new weapons, particularly the widow-maker.

I've tried all the levels, some of which are variations on others that have appeared over time so I'll just concentrate on the ones I liked the most.

Firetop Mountain

My comment here regarding Fire Top Mountain relates to the observations made by Mike Taylor (Feb 1st 2016 in the original Arcane Dimension thread). The official secret is fairly near the beginning; I can't remember where but well before you get the key for the silver door. I replayed this recently after the latest update and the number of secrets is now 10. I got 8 and don't recall seeing anything I hadn't seen before. There isn't a single extra area as such just lots of rooms that fill in the story of Firetop Mountain. They are well worth visiting in my opinion and bring out extra enemies when you find the rooms. Foggy Bogbottom

A huge decrepit town of magnificent construction. The first couple of times I played it I found all the books and the purple key but I couldn't find the exit. I no clipped to confirm that it was where I thought it was. There was probably a clue in messages that came up thru the play but at that point I had been playing for so long that any clues in messages had long been forgotten. By the way was this level tested in grandmas and children's mode i.e. those with limited combat skills (easy)? When I got to the room with the exit, there were 10 remaining monsters to to kill, which seems to be necessary open the exit, but they were nowhere to be seen and I couldn't find them anywhere in the map. I re-played in Normal mode and the rocket launcher that didn't appear in easy mode did appear in normal mode and the exit opened on the appropriate triggers. Anyway minor quibbles aside an excellent map.

Leptis Magna

A huge stone city of magnificent construction with an excellent creepy atmosphere. I'm sure the stone guardians change their posture when you're not looking at them. There's plenty of ammo in the easier skill levels at least. Progression is generally about taking out small groups of enemies rather than large hordes of them. There doesn't seem to be many short cuts so if want to come back to something often you have to take a long route. I like maps with lots of secrets and exploration and this certainly fits the bill. Some secrets are reasonably easy, some not so easy and some, well... are very secret. Like all good quake secrets they yield hidden areas, power ups, health and the better weapons earlier than when you get them through normal progression. I got 22 out of 25 in the end including finding the secret of Leptis Magna.

Forgotten Sephulcher

Another magnificent map. A huge mouldy town with a large (record breaking?) number of secrets. As per the notes there's no single way through. Though there are arrows to guide you in places. Whilst the layout can be confusing that is made up for by the ease with which you can get distracted with exploration and find yourself somewhere new. I would expect with several play throughs you'd get a better idea of the geography of the map.

All of these maps are a 5 in my opinion. Thank you map makers and coders.

P.S. I recently discovered you can quite happily play many "Vanilla" maps with this mod as well (i.e. bsp maps you'd normally install in your quake/id1/maps directory.) In fact AD has become my preferred mod for these maps. I find this pleasing, the double barrel shotgun is more powerful and you can carry more shotgun shells. :-)

Quick question about Per Aspera ad Inferi: I completed it in Nightmare, killed everyone and found all eight secrets, but I noclipped to an area overarching the exit and found a room with a pushable button that cannot be pressed. As far as I can tell, there's no way in or out of that room. Is it a forgotten leftover from a previous version of this map, or did I somehow miss a secret so secret it's not in the list?

People want a new single player Quake game, and I do to, but this here, this isn't just a mod pack... this is basically an entire new game. Boat load of new levels and content and it's FREE.

Kind of dissapointed that there isn't the weapons and other such things like from the official Quake mission packs, but I really do not care. I feel ashamed that I downloaded for free, this deserves to be a $60 game.

My only major complaint is that the levels are big, which is fine in itself, but it feels like I'm going in circles and getting lost too often, but that's only a small problem. Overall, download it if you haven't yet, or else I'll shoot you with a rocket launcher with Quad Damage!
