regular quake3 and quake live

Ok, this is probably too early to say, since quake live is not yet widely available, but I'm ask anyway. Now that Im beggining to learn programming, and now that q3a has gotten sort of a renewed interest due to this free browser based quake live thing, I was wondering, would it be possible to modify the code of q3a and/or quake live so as to enable regular q3a clients to connect to quake live servers, and viceversa, quake live clients connecting to regular q3a ones, so that both can play against each other? I would like to make that my first coding project , Im nowhere near being able to pull such thing yet, but i'd like to hear your comments about it.
