"Space Odysseys" is the original epic that continued with Yuri's highly stylized "Space Odysseys Part Two". And like Part Two the original is just that, original. Yuri has a knack for taking the tried and true textures and builds found in Quake 2 and twisting and crafting them into his own highly personal gameplay statement.

Perhaps it his use of disparate themes which he somehow is able to pull together into a cohesive unit. In "Space Odysseys" Yuri presents you with Roman type architecture complete with sunken columns, advanced futuristic space craft architecture, a stairway room that is very reminiscent of an Escher painting entitled "Relativity" and medieval architecture similar in feel to Quake1.

This multi-level package is also filled with touches of interactivity and humor. Yuri lets the player pilot a space craft (which you promptly land in a lava pool on an asteroid!) launch other space craft, and fight against foes who are equipped with futuristic tanks and laser turrets. Gameplay is top notch and you are going to need to be in fine form to make it all the way to the big boss battle at the end and survive.

Health and ammo can run low at times, particularly if you are not careful about fighting smart. There is also a tricky moving rock and lava sequence that is deadly if you again are low on health.
