Here it is, a new Q1 SP level, and one that indeed shows the potential for new SP levels. The level is done in a metal style, but more in common with custom DM mapping, twists that style into a cool industrial look, via usage of heavy detailing, industrial ducts, and prominent yellow spotlights and grilles. Add some crates and the distinctive Hipnotic green sky, and the result is a fresh look to the metal style that shows what can be done with a few ideas. However there are still some metal standards like gothic imagery and of course lava (which occasionally requires a steady hand to avoid swimming in). In some places the detailing can get a little bit too much, with some rivalry between the different styles in quite a small scale map, though mostly it looks good. The actual design and structures are fairly simple and on the small side, but the use of the ducts and yellow lights gives the architecture plenty of interest, even though there isn't really any "set piece" rooms.

The maps simplicity means there is not much exploration (except at one point with the sewer), and the map proceeds in a typical linear style. However, the two secrets are both interesting: the one I found really pleased me due to it's clever position and that it rewarded exploration, while the other secret is equally clever but much harder (it also has some dubious visual content). The gameplay is on the up close and personal side, and is tough and solid throughout the map. Luckily, it is almost always reasonable and balanced, and therefore fun - only being trapped in a dead end with 2 Ogres proved to be an annoying fight (less Ogres or more health would have solved this). The monsters are typical gothic monsters: Ogres, Knights and Death Knights, with a smattering of real monsters to get the party started.

The monsters are used well, and there are plenty of minor surprises to keep you on your toes. On the subject of suprises, there are a couple of nasty traps - the first one is quite entertaining if you survive, and uses monsters well. The second, however, is more annoying, and unless you proceed with great caution, will find you either dead or in a really awkward fight - it is marked so look out. Finally gameplay-wise, the end of the map (which arrives quite soon due to it's size) is jolly good, and has interesting monster positions. Oh yes, and there is a "story" to go with all this, but it really rather silly and not much to do with the map (which doesn't need a story, this is Quake after all=) ). Overall, it's got a cool style, and it's tough but fun, and of course, it's new. So go play it. (Did an Easy speedrun in 0:28.)
