Canabode: "Canyon's Abode"
(Size: 900k. Alternative downloads: Canabode / Canabode)

Appropriately named as it does indeed consist of a canyon, and yay, even an abode (and a cave system to start). A nice combination and I always like outdoor sections in maps - this is no exception. But first, to begin at the beginning: The level starts in dark, cramped and fairly natural looking caves system (though the lava bit looks rather artificial). This section is done well, and with the random look to it, fairly convincing (this does however, cause some gameplay difficulties - see later). From thence, a canyon, and a rather nice one, with appropriate dimensions, and some fittingly primitive wooden designs - sort of lookout towers and stockades. Again, this section is done well, and feels quite atmospheric, with the dark blue night sky. I would have preferred to see more of this - as outdoor sections go, it's all pretty cool, with nice textures and lighting, though some more natural angles would be good.

Finally, the abode itself, done in a blue medieval style, with plenty of well angled details. Mostly this is quite good, the front of the abode is good, and there's a fair bit of effort put into designs and details inside. However, in some places, it felt a bit unpolished, as there were a lot of details, but some looked a bit scrappy, as did some of the texture combinations. Lighting is fairly distinctive in this level - there is a lot of contrast, and much of it is fairly dark. This works well in the caverns and canyons, but in the abode, it tends to spoil the lines of the designs, meaning there is too much going on visually - simpler lighting would have worked better I feel. Progression throughout these sections is fully linear, and even the secrets require little exploration - however, you often have to hunt around a bit for buttons (and the gold key, perhaps tricky but there is a hint), and because of the style and variety of the map, you get a good sense of progression.

Gameplay is good, but could be improved. The problem I have with it is the start really is quite awkward in places, due to the cramped caverns, the dim lighting, various bits of scenery that it's easy to get stuck on. I found this off putting at the very start of the map, and with no skill settings, other might too. Once you get out of the caverns, the gameplay improves, and continues in a fun, and increasingly tough style. The canyon and the first section of the abode has mostly sniping style gameplay, while inside the abode, there are quite a few exciting (and challenging) arena style combats, which provide a suitable climax towards the end. The challenge is fairly continuous throughout, and fairly high - following on screen instructions helps, as does being able to face up to multiple enemies with little cover in places - some may find this overly hard, and there is some reliance on hidden areas. You generally have plentiful firepower though, which is good. Overall, I liked the gameplay, but only once I got past the start. Worth checking out for the canyon style - quite a good map but needs some more polish.
