DMSP
(Size: 130 k. Alternative downloads: DMSP)

Note: This mod has now been superceded by DMSP 2 (review), it is recommended you use that version instead.

This is a mod that generates arena-style single player gameplay on any Quake deathmatch map. It works thusly: The player starts on the map, and has 10 seconds to collect items, before monsters start appearing on the deathmatch spawn points - they are already aware of the player and will start hunting. Monsters are limited to low - medium monsters, up to Deathknights, and their numbers depend on the skill setting, (but are the same amount on every map). After a while, all the monsters will have spawned, and the map finishes when the player has hunted down and killed them all. The mod will also add extra monsters to any single player map that comes with deathmatch spawn points, e.g. all the Id maps and many older custom maps, which provides an extra challenge.

Overall this mod is very effective - there are many excellent Q1 DM maps available that are an appropriate size and design to work with the mod, and it gives single players the opportunity to enjoy playing them. To find good maps, head to MultiplayerQuake and search in their archives for the top ranked maps (maps shown above are Rpdm7 and Summer). A few aspects to note: The high monster density, amount of weak monsters, and the rocket launchers and Quad that DM maps often feature, all lead to fast and violent gameplay with a lot of gibs. This can cause packet overflow where the sound cuts out; also it crashed Quake a few times for me. It's a pity a few tougher monsters couldn't be dropped in occasionally, as most maps have the firepower to deal with them, and it would add more variety. The skill settings are very effective for monster numbers, with Nightmare adding more monsters, so the mod should be accessible to all players. Cool stuff!
