MCM01: "Curse of the Pharaoh"
(Size: 300k. No Alternative downloads.)

Note: Because I gave the author some ideas for this map, I discussed the finished map with my friend SCRAD to get an unbiased view.
This map is a conversion of a DM map: MCMDM01, and the author admits it was originally planned for as an SP map, so the linear layout works rather well for SP - better than it would work for DM - and it certainly stands up on it's own as a good SP map!! It's a fairly small map, but plenty of monsters have been crammed in for your amusement. As you might be able to guess, it's a temple/Egyptian themed map - it adheres to this theme well, with appropriate textures and details. However, it isn't as spectacular or interesting as most maps in this style, due to firstly the fairly simple designs and structures, and secondly the mostly plain textures. Having said that, the main room is a fine example of how a good idea can turn simple structures into a cool and rather appropriate design - I really like this room. Elsewhere there is still enough variety, angles, details and designs (such as sarcophagi, good doorways, and a spiral staircase) to keep the map fairly attractive. Additionally the lighting is rather good, being effective and almost all realistically sourced, and the map is finished well with no glitches I could find.

There isn't any exploration to be had, due to the limits of the original design, and there is one easy secret, which does come in very useful. The gameplay is where this map shines - there is a constant barrage of appropriately themed monsters to deal with, and there is great use of lurking/appearing/teleporting monsters to keep you on your toes - good dodging (or running away) skills are handy. However, the map isn't that challenging because you do get a lot of ammo and a fair bit of health - less of both towards the end would have been more exciting. The map has an interesting start and progresses nicely from there - at first the monsters go down easy, but when you get to the main room the combat really hots up. This room is the highlight of the action with attacks and appearing monsters from all directions - good chaotic fun. After this room, the gameplay is still good to the end, with some nice monster use, but unfortunately it gets rather easy with the weapons and combat situations - the monsters are hampered by the scenery at the end. The end needs some tweaking to make it a good climax - for example getting trapped in the final 4 room set would have been more exciting. There are no traps (other than monsters) or trick gameplay to hamper the flow, and overall the map is jolly fun.
