Article: Cube SP Enemies Breakdown. Posted: 30th October 2002.

In this article i am going to look at the Cube enemies the player must "face and frag", note that the stats table below is based on the one in the official cube readme by Aardappel. I have commented and rated each monster, the higher the "monster difficulty" the harder i think they are to frag.
I will also update this article if new monsters are added or changed in future versions of Cube.

model name gun used damage stamina speed freq lag rate loyalty

ogro fireball 5 100 14 3 0 10 1
rhino chaingun 7 70 18 2 70 1 2
ratamahatta shotgun 50 120 12 1 100 30 4
slith rifle 25 200 12 1 80 40 4
bauul rocket launcher 30 500 10 1 0 20 6
hellpig bite 12 50 22 3 0 10 1
knight iceball 10 250 8 1 0 1 6
goblin slimeball 7 100 12 1 0 20 2

Notes: "damage" is damage done to you for a single shot, "Stamina" is the amount of damage they take before dying, "Speed" is their movement speed in cubes/sec (player = 24). "Freq" is the relative frequency of spawning of the monster in DMSP mode, and is hence not relevant to normal SP mode. "Lag" is how long it takes them to press fire, "Rate" is rate of firing. "Loyalty" indicates how often they have to be hit by another monster in a row before they fight back.

Monsters (from left to right); Ogro, Rhino, Ratamahatta.

Ogro:
This is equivalent to the soldiers in Doom, or the "Grunt" in Quake, its a small, reasonably fast enemy, which tends to be found in groups of 3 or 4 (or more!) and they are all attacking you at the same time. The Ogro's attack is the Fireball, which is actually quite fast and difficult to avoid, especially when they get close enough to you. This makes dealing with Ogros in big group attacks a tricky prospect; just like DOOM, the shotgun is your best best here for clearing some much-needed breathing-space.
Monster Difficulty: 7/10 My Overall Rating: 8/10

Rhino:
This is the small purple guy, who moves pretty fast, i like these monster because of their speed of movement and also their rate of firing, both of which are pretty fast. Anyway they are kind of like mini-ogros except faster-moving and hence harder to frag. If you want to give the player a real challenge just drop him in a room with no exit and about 20 of these guys and watch them panic. =)
Monster Difficulty: 8/10 My Overall Rating: 9.5/10

Ratamahatta:
As well as having a complex and largely unpronounceable name, seemingly derived from some weird Indian cult(!), these are the mean looking green monsters, maybe they are a relative of Godzilla, who knows? =) They are very dangerous as they have the shotgun as their weapon and therefore can do a lot of damage, if one of them is right next to you and fires you are gonna know about it, and might quite possibly take enough damage to be killed outright just from that one shot. 2 or 3 of these in an ambush would be very nasty.
Monster Difficulty: 9/10 My Overall Rating: 9/10

Monsters (from left to right); Slith, Bauul, Hellpig.

Slith:
These guys are very tall and a bit scary the first time you see them. Fortunately they are not quite as tough as they look, moving slowly and also taking a while to actually shoot at you. Be careful if they do get a shot off however, they do a bit of damage.
Monster Difficulty: 6/10 My Overall Rating: 7/10

Bauul:
Demon, Cyberdemon from Doom II, Demon-like, however you want to look at these guys (preferably not for very long), there is a lot of "Demonage" going on here. I think these are the *biggest* monsters in Cube, and they also come armed with a rocket launcher just to welcome you. (why do i feel like i am writing the DOOM manual?) =) Anyway, they do lots of damage with those rockets so watch out! The upside is they are slow, so out-manouever them and send them back to hell.
Monster Difficulty: 8/10 My Overall Rating: 9.5/10

Hellpig:
Basically we are talking cannon-fodder here, these monsters dont have a weapon, just a "bite", and of course they can only bite you when they are right next to you, so dont let them get to close and you should be OK. They can be tricky if there is lots of them in a bunch as they move pretty fast; dont get trapped in a corner and you should be fine. I like the design of them, though, big teeth and nice long tails.
Monster Difficulty: 4/10 My Overall Rating: 6/10

Monsters (from left to right); Knight, Goblin.

Knight:
This enemy is a nicely-detailed and designed model, a big metallic knight with a cool-looking shield. However in my opinion he is *currently* too slow, in terms of movement but primarily his shot speed; the iceball he fires at you is a bit too slow and easy too dodge. If this monsters speed/shotspeed was pushed up, then you would be looking at one of the best enemies in the game, at the moment they are just a little too easy in my opinion.
Monster Difficulty: 5/10 My Overall Rating: 6/10

Goblin:
These guys don't look very threatening, smallish orangey goblins that look wimpy, but they are more dangerous than they at first might appear. This is mainly due to the speed of the green "slimeball" they fire off at you, its very quick and quite hard to avoid. Luckily it doesn't do too much damage, but if the player is confronted with more than 1 of these simultaneously, he is in for a tough battle. A cool little monster.
Monster Difficulty: 8/10 My Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Well, i hope you enjoyed that look at all the cube SP monsters, they make a good bunch of enemies and a tough challenge, even on default skill (level 3).
