What is DMSP2?
DMSP2 is a modification for Quake 1 coded by Aardappel and Fat Controller. It is a brilliantly simple yet effective idea, i will let the readme explain the details:

The way it works: As the map starts, you get 10 seconds to grab the items you need, after that, the "invasion" starts: monsters spawn in on the deathmatch spawns (1 every second!) and attack you straight away. The amount of monsters that invades the map is fixed and determined by the "skill" variable: 40/60/80/100 of them on skills 0/1/2/3."

That should give you the general concept. Look at the 3 links above for lots more details. The easiest way to experience how much fun this mod can be is to simply fire up a map and start playing, its actually a very simple idea.

TECHNICAL NOTE: I recommend playing the DMSP2 mod *within* the panquake mod, also by Aardappel. The reason i recommend this is that panquake has an packet overflow/edicts size fix, and also includes a quake-c mod which quickly removes gibs and corpses (after 5 seconds). In normal DMSP2 some maps crash when monsters jump through teleporters and get stuck, but in panquake DMSP2 never crashes (at least it hasn't in my experience).
So, to play DMSP2 within panquake, you install panquake.exe in your QUAKE directory (as per normal), install DMSP2 in a subfolder (e.g. C:\QUAKE\DMSP2, as per normal) and then create a shortcut to panquake.exe with this command line: [note this line sets skill to HARD, and turns off the panorama mode]

C:\QUAKE\panquake.exe -game dmsp2 +skill 2 +map dmsp1 +heapsize 24000 +pan 0

Some recommended maps to play in DMSP2 & FASTEST TIMES Competition.

Listed below (in no real order) are 10 of the best maps i have found to play in the DMSP mod. They all are great maps in terms of architecture and texturing. And in gameplay terms, they all work well inside the DMSP2 mod framework. If you know/find a map which you think should be here let me know and i might add it in. Note: I have collected and zipped these 10 maps into 1 big collection [4.2MB] which can be downloaded here.

Fastest times [ON HARD SKILL] competition:
I am also listing the 5 best times for each map, people send in your times! All times are FOR HARD SKILL SETTING ONLY. To submit your times: Email me, with either a screenshot [press F12 in Quake to take a screenshot, then it will be inside your DMSP2 folder] or a Demo of your time, if you take a screenshot, it should be the time/secret/kills screen displayed when you kill all the monsters, OR the "DMSP precise time" (available in the console when you finish the map). (The number of kills should always be 80 on hard).

NOTE: a DEMO is the *preferred* method for submitting your time (for now i will still accept screenshots, but that may change in the future). A Demo means definite proof plus i can link to them and other people can download and watch them (just like the Demos at SDA).

Instructions relating to Demos (borrowed from SDA):
- To watch a Quake demo, download the file and unzip it in your quake/id1 directory. Run Quake with the appropriate -game parameter, go to the console and type in "playdemo [demoname]"
- To record your own demo, type record name map, where name is the name you choose for your demo, and map for instance is e1m5.
- To record a demo when you're connecting to a server, do not specify a map with the record command and then connect to the server. Ex: "record e1m5;connect 129.241.30.116"
- A good thing to do is binding a key to the recording, then it is much easier to use/try again and again. Type something like: bind "enter" "record mydemo e1m5"

dmsp1: Centripiece
This map was written by Elek especially for the release of DMSP 2, and it shows. Excellent circular layout obviously gives the map great connectivity and allows all the monsters to spread out well. Great wood textures and detailing as well. Curves in Quake 1 always looks great when done with this much skill.

xntrick: Trick or Treat!
Wonderful textures, in a very unusual style for Quake 1, but the Halloween/nightmare theme fits in perfectly with the Quake paradigm in this map by Xenon. The Red/Black look of this map is one i really like. Gameplay is simply *superbly frantic*, this map is almost the perfect size for DMSP on Hard. Lots of Ogres and Fiends make this map a real challenge on Hard/Nightmare.

rcdm7: The ministry of Love
George Orwell's 1984 provides the inspiration for this superb example of Quake 1 DM mapping. Fat Controller has delivered the goods big time, with wonderful curves everywhere. The excellent custom *metallic* textures by Stecki fit the theme of this map very well.

lacrima: Lacrima Christi
A Gorgeous looking map constructed by Gilt, representing a grey stone cathedral and crumbling rock faces, which also plays well in DMSP. The architecture is really the highlight of this map, wonderfully unique and graphically stunning. Its also a real challenge in DMSP Hard/Nightmare.

pli: Peace & Love Incorporated
Stecki makes use of his own textures (see also rcdm7 above) in crafting this wonderfully brutal, compact map, which presents a real frenzy in DMSP. Tightly packed monsters mean some very smart maneuvering is needed to finish this map on DMSP Hard Skill. The vertical element adds to the fun as well.

north: Somewhere in the North
Excellent snowy/icy theme in this map is implemented with great custom textures in this map by Qurnel. The compact, tight layout is well suited to DMSP with some really intense action taking place all over the level, great fun.

reinc5: Somewhere in the Vast
A "floater" in the good old space/void, mapped by BAL. The constant threat of plummeting to your doom makes the already intense DMSP gameplay even more exciting. The smallish layout leads to incredibly intense fighting in DMSP mode, monsters spawn in from everywhere, nice vertical elements as well. Look for the red armor and MH to help complete this map.

lilith: Lilith
Great DM map from Vondur that plays well in DMSP. Lava is a constant threat, as you are attacked by hordes of monsters be careful not to panic and stumble into the red stuff. Great texturing means the eye-candy is also good.

gendm2: Hyperalgesis
This is an older DM map [1998] by Sebastian "GeN" Bentler, certainly it has a traditional feel to it in terms of textures and theme. The map is quite big for a DM map, which usually doesn't work to well in DMSP, but here it does; so that even though i am not quite sure why, the map provides a really strong, intense test in DMSP mode.

Speedy's recently released DM level, makes an excellent DMSP map. It presents a good, tough challenge and the authors own excellent custom swampy/green/mossy stone textures give the map a great atmosphere.
