PlanetFortress vs. PlanetHalfLife
The Battle of the Planets! PlanetHalfLife, prepare to meet PlanetFortress, aka, the DEATH STAR!
The Warthog

Introduction
PlanetFortress Vs. PlanetHalf-Life: a battle of the planets. It all started when LadyICE and I were discussing possible events that PlanetFortress could do to promote ourselves, and so on. I can't remember who suggested it, but the idea of a match in TFC between the two sites came up. Both sets of staffs loved the idea, and so it began.

Just so everyone understands, this match (and any mentions of it in this article and elsewhere by myself) are not meant to be competition with PlanetHalfLife, we had an excellent time and it's only appropriate to "rib" them until they have something to get us for.

Anyshags, the PlanetFortress staff only had one goal. Have fun and win (ok that was two, but who's counting?). Our team was assembled, I grabbed all the core admins from the main PlanetFortress site: DieHard, [KoB]HardCharger, [FOoM]Directrix, Enon` and Slick. We then got PainKilleR-[CE] from TFTech, Totentanz from The Fort and TFC-Reform Project, Iceman-TPF- and [WoB]12PackAttack-TPF- who did bits for our TFC Guide and the up and coming TPF Website. To make sure we weren't short if someone couldn't show (it was an 8v8 game, we wanted two backups), Ir8-Entreri was asked to come along by 12Pack.

We set the date for January 1st, 2001 for the battle. Maps picked were Well, 2Fort, (3rd map was to be picked spontaneously) we used an STA server.cfg, but went with 25 minute matches.

After a bunch of email was exchanged amongst us, [CPF] (Clan PlanetFortress) had a practice. Mainly we worked out the defensive strats that we had talked about and also to get a better feel for how we played together. We've played at various times, but never all of us at once. It was a very nice experience. We found our strengths and weaknesses, and during the practice I personally gained a lot of confidence, we also worked out the use of Roger Wilco (never be in a clan without it). More emails worked out the rest of the details we wanted, and we were good to go.

When it came to match time, PlanetHalf-Life was missing LadyICE and Jeh and a couple others who were supposed to be able to make it. The rest of the guys were good enough to play anyway and find some additional #planethalflife regulars to fill out their team (Koron from the Team Fortress File Factory got in on it even!), but as a result, they were a bit slapdash.

The Match
The first map was Well, our defense got in position and was ready to lay the smack down with our very tight setup (sorry, can't tell you what it was; we may need to use it again, after all). Our offense was a conc jumping frenzy with PainKilleR, Directrix, Enon`, having Totentanz, and DieHard backing up as Soldiers.

During prematch, I joined the red team (PHL's Side) and took some shots to better show what a PF delivered smack down would look, and it was great. However, in setting up a Roger Wilco transmit key, I had forgotten that I moved my ScreenShot key. That was too bad, but no matter. I spectated the game because my connection was acting up after being good for a couple weeks ("Murphy loves match nights," as someone from CPF said).

I mainly spectated our defense, so I'll have to focus things from that side. Iceman's Sentry was taken out a couple times, that was stressful, but 12 and his pipes were taking care of anyone wanting to get remotely close to the flag. HardCharger was calling out enemies in the room and doing damage with his chaingun. We were on edge, but smooth sailing. Things got pretty comfortable for us when we noted that caps were flowing in quite well, and the defensive system we had laid out was doing well. PlanetHalf-Life did touch and get the flag into the water once or twice, and one time got a cap out of the deal. Our offense however, simply dominated. As you can see in the pic, and Iceman said best, "Boy, we sure do score a lot!" our offense had some of the best TFC players doing what they do and love best.

We ended up winning the match 180 to 10, and were quite happy. It looks as though PlanetHalfLife is going to learn something about TF Vets.

2Fort was the next map. A few PHL'rs dropped and we played 6 v 6, the match turned out being the same pattern as Well, but more caps for us due to the shorter run back to the cap point. I was playing defense for the first half, but Murphy would have none of that, so I went back to spectating for the remainder of the game while Enon` filled my spot.

The match on 2Fort ended at 220 to 0, our defense being able to shut them out. A very nice accomplishment.

Warpath was chosen as the final map. PlanetHalfLife pulled together for some very good battles that had us backpedaling from points 3 to 2 quite often. However, every time they did that, I took my trusty rocket launcher and cleared up any mess that was left, and the rest of the team was waiting at each command point to capture. You'll see a shot 1/2 through the game next to this writing.. I unfortunately had to leave before getting a end game screenie, so hopefully someone will toss an end-game shot my way..

Overview
Overall, it was a very interesting match, and lots of fun had by all. It was too bad PlanetHalf-Life ended up not having everyone and getting a bit disorganized, if they had not had those two problems to deal with, it would have been a closer match (and I also promised them to give them my configs to show them what a TF config should look like). Hopefully we'll get to do it again sometime soon, and even though PlanetFortress will still win, it'll be tons of fun! :)

Thanks to: [FOoM]Sid for letting us use his server for the match, it was very smooth, all the [CPF] Players, you guys made for excellent team mates, I enjoyed it throughly, and PlanetHalfLife for the match.

Good Game PlanetHalf-Life, I hoped you Counter-Strike and Deathmatch players learned a thing or two about how hard-core TeamFortress truly is. Who's next?!
