TF2's Real Weapons
A couple readers got interested in the real weapons used in TF2, they compiled information from books, or their dads. -- See, they are good for something. Books, I mean. Remember, this information is "real," not necessarily what is going to be true in TF2.

First off we'll start with Justin, all the information was acquired from his dad, who is a former Marine Force Recon Sargent and a D.C. Emergency Response Team Sargent (fancy name for the SWAT team).

I noticed something about the "heavy weapons" guy. In the screen shots you see a soldier carrying an M-60 assault rifle and firing it like you would an M-16 (see " italy2.jpg"). This weapon is normally fired when you are laying down with the bi-pod deployed, and is only fired like an M-16 by a couple military groups (SEALS and Force Recon are two of the more popular). The M-60 is the main heavy assault rifle of the U.S. Military and has been since Vietnam. So it would seem to me that the Heavy Weapons guy would be able to both fire his weapon on the ground for more accuracy, and standing up for more mobility but losing accuracy.

The spy looks like he is carrying an MP-5 submachine gun, which is a light weapon that is small, can be used with a silencer (which would make sense for a spy) and can be fired accurately on the move. It is used by most SWAT teams, the Navy Seals, and other special forces teams around the world.

The marine is carrying the standard issue M-16 assault rifle, which has been used in the U.S. Military since Vietnam in all services. Not very accurate while on the move because of the recoil, although while standing, you can fire the gun continuously with great accuracy.

The sniper looks like he is carrying an M-40A1 sniper rifle, which is employed by the U.S. Marines and used heavily during the Vietnam War. One of the more accurate sniper rifles in the world, very light, bolt action, and can only carry five rounds. He could also be carrying the M-24, which is a newer sniper rifle, but the design is almost identical.

The FA MAS (correct spelling with space) rifle is employed by most European military services. It is the foreign equivalent to the M-16, and makes me wonder why there are two almost identical weapons in the game, if it is employed.

Thanks Justin, cool info! -- Up next we have what Barrett Turner had to say from reading up in his books-and his dad is a colonel in the USMC, he is going to point out what he has found to be inaccurate from game info to what the real-life weapons are:

With the Marine class, it was said that every Marine would have the SMAW rocket launcher, a single shot rocket. The SMAW used by the United States Armed Forces today is a company weapon that is reloaded and reused. It is operated by one man, but that man isn't a rifleman; his sole purpose it to blow stuff up with the rocket launcher, not to use a rifle as well. The single-shot, disposable rocket launcher described in the TF2 section sounds more like the M136 AT4 rocket launcher. Its a self-contained shoulder fired anti-tank rocket that you basically throw away when you're done with it. The AT4 is used by riflemen, which fits the description much more nicely than the SMAW. As I see TF2 as a realistic game (kind of a much more fun multiplayer Rogue Spear where you actually get more than one life....oh yeah and tanks), I would hope the designers of the game would recognize the fact that the AT4 cannot pierce the armor of most main battle tanks around the world, and is used to take out smaller vehicles, bunkers, etc. If the rocket launcher is indeed the SMAW, I hope the designers would recognize that the rocket launcher would need its own class, and could be used to defeat main battle tanks.

One of the new weapons in the game identified by you guys is the "FAMAS" rifle. You guys were unsure what it would be like, so let me tell you what it should be like. The rifle is actually the FA MAS (yes, it matters that there is a space). It fires the same round as the M16 assault rifle (NATO 5.56mm or .223 calibre) and is used by the French Foreign Legion and French Army, as well as other military forces around the world. The FA stands for Fusil Automatique, which as you can guess stands for automatic rifle (thats why the space is there). It normally carries a 25 round magazine, which is located behind the handle (bullpup design). The barrel on the MAS is fractionally shorter than the M16, but because it is a bullpup design, the rifle overall is 10 inches shorter than the M16, which obviously has its advantages in close combat and urban warfare. It comes with single, three-round burst, and automatic firing options. The FA MAS is a very reliable and durable weapon.

Now you know the real weapons and how they work. Valve has stated that they will sacrifice realism for gameplay. Our TF2 Section is tops, and we'll keep updating it as any new info comes out.
