About Team Fortress Classic

Intro

Originally, Team Fortress 2: BrotherHood of Arms was going to be an official multiplayer add-on for Half-Life, however as development ensued, it became apparent that if Valve wanted to truly fill TF2's potential as it should, it would need to become it's own game. This caused a little upended excitement in gamers who had already plunked down the money for Half-Life in soul anticipation of TF2, but once they got to play HL, were elated to see what Valve and TFS could do with creating TF2 as a complete game.

Later, Valve had another treat for us, in the process of making development tools for mod-makers, Valve decided that the best way to do it was to create a mod that would cause you to test everything you would ever want to do when making a mod. And what better mod to do that than TeamFortress? Thus TeamFortress Classic was born, a reincarnate of sorts from Quake TF1, now prettier, smoother and better balanced, a true commemoration and finish to the mod that will live in infamy, TeamFortress.

TeamFortress Classic has evolved into it's own game aside from Half-Life. New players interested in getting TeamFortress 1.5 without having to buy Half-Life (and for a lower price) can get a demo (but not full version) or the Full Version and play online with any current TFC Servers and players out there from Real.com's Games.

Personally, I would buy Half-Life, you're missing out on too much if you don't, but for some this could be a decent option. -- All Patches to get your client and server up to date are avaliable on our Files Page.

The following is taken from teamfortressclassic.com.
Team Fortress is an online action game that features a wide variety of character classes -- from Medic to Spy to Demolition Man -- enlisted in a unique style of online team warfare.

Originally released in 1996 by Austrailian based Team Fortress Software, TF has been downloaded by millions of people as it has evolved and become one of the most popular online action games of all time.

The latest incarnation of this multiplayer phenomenon, Team Fortress 1.5, is now available as a free add-on for Half-Life and adds an advanced user-interface system (V-GUI), new networking and server technologies, new scenarios, and spectator modes.

Team Fortress 1.5 also serves as a point of reference for those who are interested in what Valve has in store for the upcoming Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms.
The Crew

The entire team of Valve Software is the smooth machine that shocked the gaming industry with Half-Life (the most popular game ever, to-date) and even though it's nearly 3 years old, still considered by many to be more fun than anything else released at this point in time.
