Too bad that so much time (almost one month!) was spent to make THIS... Although, I remember my first big level (not for Quake), and that map was pointless too (but not so compound and complex). Well, novices should make some trash just to learn editor and engine possibilities, but they shouldn't post it to Internet, or rather, not onto download sites for players.
Area 51 on The Quake Grave
Area 51: It's definitely as secretive and confusing as we were all expecting!
I feel like this map is a good example of biting off more than the author could chew at the time. This looks to be his first and only map and I think the map design is interesting and shows potential (especially with all of the traps and crazy teleporters and such) but in the end it ends up feeling sort of messy and misguided. I ended up having to clip to try and find my way and even then I still felt like I had no idea where to go or how you would've gotten there without clipping. I really felt like I was missing something here but I think it's all in the design of the map.
Not the worst map I've played and had I been able to find my way around, I would call it an average older map. But as it stands, I can't recommend this one unless you want to see some strange trap stuff.
I can't recommend this map, at least if you like to play maps without saving like me. After I had died for the third time to extremely cheap and unfair traps, I couldn't care to finish the map legitimately. Instead I cheated to see the rest of the unremarkable map. And that's not a good sign.
I did like this one combat "puzzle" that could be solved with a little bit of awareness of your surroundings. Otherwise the map was forgettable, and the cheap traps ended up in me rating this map 1/5.
This map is probably one of the worst maps i have ever played for quake. Their is no logic or direction evident when this map was being built and is quite confusing and not well designed. I would not recommend playing this map and would give it a rating of one out of five. Don't waist your time playing this map.
The traps could be avoided only if you knew what was coming, so your reaction time doesn't really coun for this map.
I liked the initial presentation, a lot of unaware enemies, so you could plan the attack. But it was very confunsing. And breaking the fourth wall, for me, is enjoyable when it's something like "no elevator secret" or a "secret fish". This door open somewhere else ha ha ha wasn't my kind of act.
Some maps are ugly. Some maps are incoherent. Some maps are cruel.
Unfortunately, this map is all three.
After a couple of failed attempts, I was able to get through it (see demo) and it has an exit, so it's not the worst map I have ever played, but it's a mess.
