Celebrating 12 years of Quake!

Speedmodding

There has been some request for speedmodding in #qexpo, and since no-one else has mentioned anything, I'm gonna try to co-ordinate some.

Speedmodding is where people use their knowledge of the inner workings of the game code to create something interesting in a short amount of time (typically 24 hours or slightly longer, as opposed to the weeks or months that it can take to make a full modification), then share them with each other and the community. They can range from just applying the idea to the base game in a relatively subtle way, to creating something completely wacky that could almost resemble a minigame. It's about enjoying the process of modding, experimenting with new ideas, seeing how other people realize a certain theme, or just for exercise, without the pressure to create something perfect. There will be two speedmodding events during QExpo this year, and unlike previous speedmodding events, they will be open to any of the first three Quakes.

To participate, simply create a mod, package up all of the files required to play it, add a quick description (including who made it, how to play it, and which Quake the mod is for), then either e-mail it to me (shrapnel * city & gmail * com - replace the punctuation as appropriate) or give me a link so that I can download it. You can do this either by e-mail, or find me (Lardarse) in #qexpo and other selected IRC channels. Questions, comments, and suggestions for future themes can be sent to me in the same way.

Those that are paying attention to this year's QExpo may recognise most of the above description.

Just two entries this time. Patrick Martin has submitted Lancer, his take on the old NES clssic of the same name. Full details are included inside, as well as a seperate progs.dat for DarkPlaces to take advantage of its better movement handling features.

Sajt released WRASSLIN' a few days ago. His booth does a better job of explaining it than I ever could, so go there to find out more.

necros is also working on something that he might be able to release by the end of QExpo that is somewhat related to the theme, look at his booth for more details.

That's it for speedmodding this year. Sadly, I don't have time to run the 3rd session that was thinking about running. But if you're thinking about making something something now, with just a week of QExpo remaining, then why don't you have a go. You never know, you might even enjoy it...

And we're back. After a call for theme suggestions, Jehar suggested this to me yesterday. It's likely to be a bit easier than the last one, and so there's much more potential for ideas.

This session's theme is MELEE!

That's right, kids. Drop your guns (and the coffin), and get ready to punch, kick, slap, slash, bludgeon, Glasgow kiss*, or just generally beat the crap out of things. You have until 11pm PDT on Monday (That's 8am Tuesday CET) to finish your mod and send it to me. That's pretty much 72 hours from the date of this announcement. Good luck!

* In case you're wondering, this means headbutt.

FISH!

Patrick Martin has submitted a mod for Quake that lets you morph into a fish, and also makes the rotfish a tougher enemy by giving them a charging attack. As he didn't really give it a name, I'm going to christen it Fish vs. Fish. Instructions are included in the text file. Enjoy your meal.

FISH!

daemon has uploaded his mod, with the rather humourous name of Get The Hell Away From My Fish Dinner! to his booth. Also for Quake. Probably requires DarkPlaces. Enjoy your meal.

FISH!

And Peewee has sent in Fish Unleashed, which I believe is the first ever Quake 2 speedmod! Designed for deathmach, with limited support for single player. Modify the included autoexec.cfg to suit your needs. Enjoy your meal.

I WILL!

I'm assuming that you're reading this because you want to take part. Or at least, think about taking part. So here's all of the information that you need:

This session's theme is FISH!

A tough theme to start with, I know. But you'll think of something. You have until 12pm PDT (9pm CET) on Sunday to finish your mod and send it to me. That's just under 72 hours from the date of this announcement. Good luck!

Update: Sajt has mentioned that these models may be useful to people participating in this.
