Official Forum
1 - Maps have to be completed by September 12, 2008. (This date is subject to change) and submitted to the Head Judge.
2 - As long as we get at least 5 mappers signed up, the contest is on.
3 - Maps have to be new, not old touched up maps and the map has to be created so that it can be played on the original Quake 2. A Deathmatch map.
4 - You can use custom textures, env. & sound files may be used in this contest.
5 - The map shall be designed for use without a hook. That way it can be played by any MOD.
6 - Mappers shall submit the finished maps in the form of a zip file and files must be pointed towards your C:Quake2baseq2 (or equal) directory for easy installation. Judges should not have to guess where files should go.
7 - Mappers must supply Head Judge a download link or zip file for the maps on the completion date.
8 - All mappers will keep their maps secret until the deadline (no screen-shots of the maps shall be shared with the public until all maps are released). At that point, the download links or zip files will be supplied to Head Judge in a private message. This way, the maps will all be released to the judges on the same day. At that point, Head Judge will forward all of the download links or zip files to the judges by private message or email.
9 - At this point the judges will have 1 week to test the maps. Then they will send Head Judge their results through email.
10 – Head Judge will then post the results on the Café. Every judges scores will be made public.
11 - Depending on how things go, the deadline may be pushed back in order to get everything done.
12 - Judges will also keep the maps secret until the end of the contest.
13 - Judges will score the maps on a 0 to 10 scale on the different categories, selected by the Café. Judges will then give the results to Head Judge at the end of the contest.
14 - In the event of a tie, each map will share that position. So we could end up with 2 first place maps or 2 second place maps, etc.
These rules should be followed by mappers and judges.
If anyone breaks these rules you could be disqualified from the contest.

Hosted by GlobalGamers!

The contest is to see who can come up with the best Photoshopped/GIMPed image. We're looking for images of retail or customer service environments, but with Quake characters replacing the employees, which should make for some entertaining scenes if people are creative. Think of a Shambler working the McDonalds drive-through - or whatever!
Word-balloons, captions, or anything added to the photo is totally legit, but try to keep it mostly appropriate (feel free to add in ludicrous gibs though).
Global Gamers staff will narrow the submissions down to the top 5, and then those submissions will be voted on by the Tastyspleen and Quake Expo crew.

Prizes:

There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for the submissions:
1st place receives a $50 gift certificate to ThinkGeek.com
2nd place receives a $25 gift certificate.
3rd place receives a $10 gift certificate.
We reserve the right to increase the amount for the prizes if we REALLY like the submissions.

Now go check out the Global Gamers booth for more details, contact info, and general goodness!

Speedmapping are fun events that allow mappers to create small SP or DM levels in a short time (some two hours instead of weeks or months as full-size maps take), then share them with each other and the community. It's about enjoying the process of mapping, experimenting with new ideas, seeing how other people realize a certain theme, or just for exercise, without the pressure to create something perfect.
So far, there have been almost 150 SM sessions - you can check out most of the packs in the Quaddicted SM archive.

During this QExpo three (possibly four) speedmapping events are going to take place.

You can find the details and deadlines for these events over at the Official Booth
Start Date: 2008-08-21 00:00:00 PST
End Date: 2008-08-29 00:00:00 PST

There has been some request for speedmodding in #qexpo, and since no-one else has mentioned anything, I'm gonna try to co-ordinate some.

Speedmodding is where people use their knowledge of the inner workings of the game code to create something interesting in a short amount of time (typically 24 hours or slightly longer, as opposed to the weeks or months that it can take to make a full modification), then share them with each other and the community. They can range from just applying the idea to the base game in a relatively subtle way, to creating something completely wacky that could almost resemble a minigame. It's about enjoying the process of modding, experimenting with new ideas, seeing how other people realize a certain theme, or just for exercise, without the pressure to create something perfect. There will likely be three speedmodding events during QExpo this year, and unlike previous speedmodding events, they will be open to any of the first three Quakes.

To participate, simply create a mod, package up all of the files required to play it, add a quick description (including who made it, how to play it, and which Quake the mod is for), then either e-mail it to me (shrapnel * city & gmail * com - replace the punctuation as appropriate) or give me a link so that I can download it. You can do this either by e-mail, or find me (Lardarse) in #qexpo and other selected IRC channels. Questions, comments, and suggestions for future themes can be sent to me in the same way.

Those that are paying attention to this year's QExpo may recognise most of the above description.
This session's theme is FISH!

A tough theme to start with, I know. But you'll think of something. You have until 12pm PDT (9pm CET) on Sunday to finish your mod and send it to me. That's just under 72 hours from the date of this announcement. Good luck!
