TF2: Teamplay

Numerous things are being done for one cause, TeamPlay: The foundation of TeamFortress. The largest game design that promotes teamplay is the simplist concept, but most likely the hardest to get right. That would be the balancing of classes. The Machine Gunner has the weaponry that can take out a entire squad in seconds. But he's got the problem of getting set up, and if a couple of baddies get in close, watch-out. That's why he needs an escort of faster, and lighter armed classes to keep people from getting in too close. This is one of many examples that you'll find will just happen with a team that wins.

Something that has received a lot of attention lately is how important the medic now is. Since he can add armour and health to players, and even revive those who are dying, he is always the first to get shot at by the enemy. And many times, traps are laid for him involving a dying comrade, while the enemy hides somewhere and springs when the medic makes an attempt to revive the fallen team mate.

Certain weapons in the TF2 arsenal will operate more accurately when two people use them at once. For example, a machine gun can be used by a single player, but it fires much more accurately when another player stands by to feed it ammunition. Another team enhancement involves a player who acts as a sort of field general, shouting tactical orders from above the action. A new in-game voice communication system which will let certain ranks use verbal commands online should be in place by the time the game ships. (Check out an example of this)

In another teamwork-boosting feature, squad leaders will exert an effect on their squad members within a certain area: Squaddies will enjoy an improved firing rate and accuracy when they stick close to their leaders.

The ways to make all this teamwork easier are also being thought about, the two major ones being Voice Communication and the Commander class. They will help keep teams organized and not have to worry about the elusive "fraged-while-typing" that happens all too often. Even with a high quality text communication script.
