Competently assembled compact ID quality and style map. Lacks a bit in gameplay, compared with ID maps.
Competent and enjoyable, but definitely showing its age. As part of an episode of half a dozen maps, it would be really nice; but as a standalone in 2015, it can't be scored higher than three stars.
I was torn between giving this a 3 and a 4. On one hand, the gameplay is slightly repetitive: press a switch to open a door, fight a couple enemies, then press another switch, etc. On the other hand, the architecture is quite nice, with obvious attention to detail, and the map feels very similar to the original Quake maps without being a retread.
Horror Erotique on The Quake Grave
This is a very short and sweet map. Quick to play but it does a lot of things right!
The architecture is the strongpoint of the map. For early 1997, it's just gorgeous, and is a treat to explore.
But as stated by others, the gameplay isn't the greatest. The beginning is kind of brutal, with fighting against bullet sponges in a cramped space. I also didn't quite like the constant slapping enemies in your face.
If the gameplay was a bit better, I'd consider rating this 5/5 for the time, but as it is, 4/5.
Nice metal map from 1997 with great architecture and decent gameplay. Only negative thing i can say about this map is that it is too short. But for a first release from this level designer this is a well crafted map especially from the early quake modding days. I would give this map a four out of five rating and would highly recommend playing this map.
Considering it came out in '97, this map is awesome! Yeah, it's short, but that doesn't bother me ... just play another map afterward! The brushwork/layout is great compared to other maps during that time and even now. There is nothing wrong with the gameplay unless you're a horde fight junkie. This is a great example of classic Quake.
My only critique (and it's seriously minor) is that there is some x-axis funkiness with the doors when they open because they are flush to the wall. However, in '97 this guy built this level with an editor way less intuitive than Trenchbroom (probably a 2-D editor at that)... and the only reason this bugs me is because they rest is so laid out so cleanly. It's like a scratch on a Ferrari.
