I really liked this, and for such an early map it has remarkable visuals. Also features some little surprises, e.g. what happens with the exit teleporter if you think you just have to enter it and the map is finished. :) If you like base maps in general, you can't go wrong with this one!
Good, solid fun. OK, it's unsophisticated, but it's from 1997, when the world was a simpler place. Already, this was better than ID's own base maps. Best moment: right at the end. Loved it.
I quite enjoyed this map! Consistent game play and loving the doom textures ;)
Apparently I'm the odd man out, but I found this to be a dull grind. The gameplay consists of taking a lift into a room full of grunts, getting shot at, searching for buttons to open a gate to take the next lift into the next room... it's ultra-repetitive. I thought the author's other base map was much more fun and creative.
I expected far better from Shambler's old PQ writeup :(
I highly enjoyed playing this quake map and I don't even like base themed quake maps very much. However this map has plenty of engaging combat, a good amount of secrets to discover, and well designed brushwork and level design. The ending scenario of the map was most memorable thing to me about this custom quake level. I would highly recommend playing this map as this the the level designer's best work thus far and would give it a 5 out of rating.
This is an excellent Base map. Good flow and gameplay, lots of setups and movement, zero stagnation. The only thing I think some get hung up on is the strict Base lineup. In that case, play Arcane (also excellent).
It's interesting to see the difference in quality between this and Underworld, another map by the same author released 6 months earlier. Build quality is improved and in many places now exceeds standard ID brushwork. It gets a bit too corridor heavy in places, but there are a few good fight setups that make up for that, and a very fun final battle. The out-of-reach ammo stash was a funny troll.
