For some reason when I was cranking this puppy up, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot, which probably has a lot to do with how much I enjoyed this treat. I ran the map in one of my favorite Quake engines, Tomaz, and let me tell you the map looks downright beautiful! The map uses a futuristic texture set named Oblivion for Q2. It’s definitely an interesting mix of textures, but the only problem is it seems a bit inconsistent. Check out Screenshot 1, notice the dirt-like texture there on the floor? Then check Screenshot 2, where you see the brown stone. Now those two do go together, but the walls and trim follow a tech theme. Pope also plasters a lot of the floor with what appears to be a grate texture, which I was a bit unsure about. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but grey grates going into brown stone distracted me a few times.

The texture problems aside, lets move on to the brushwork. Pope did an amazing job on the brush work, with curvy walls, nice trim, and windows that just look amazing. It’s little details like the nicely cut out windows with the little bit of trim that really grabs your eye. Glance over there at Screenshot 3, and check out that amazing pillar in the main area. The trim surrounding it, and the arms coming off of it attaching to the outer wall all show amazing attention to detail.

Now how about that gameplay? Well unfortunately I was only able to run through this one with some bots, but I can still give the low down on how this one plays out. One main problem I had was the Yellow Armor, and Red Armor being way too close to each other. What’s even worse is that right next to the Shaft is an elevator that sends you up to the YA. Then you head right on over to the RA, and you’re one serious powerhouse. If you can successfully make that run, you’ll be able to quickly run into either a Rocket Launcher or Grenade Launcher. I wish this map would have been play tested some more because it really shows promise for very positive flow, just some bad item placement hinder it. I’d really like to see that RA get moved elsewhere and perhaps that elevator either removed, or the Shaft moved elsewhere.

All in all, the map’s pretty good. It just needed a bit more on the testing side, and the textures could have been reworked a tad bit. I’d still recommended for just a group of four or five friends getting together for a bit of fragging action, so go ahead and give it a whirl
