My first thoughts on this mod was that it would just be a Killer Quake Patch copy. I was wrong. The only similarities between the two are that they both host a ton of new weapons, and that’s where the similarities stop. The Xoron Weapon Patch is created completely by Mathew Karr unlike K.Q.P. That is just an assembly of already created mods. In this review we will go over the new additions to the Quake arsenal.

Here we will review the weapons added to each specific button.

Button 1:

  • The Shield:
The Shield is an interesting mod that is totally unique to XWEP17. Press button 1 twice and you will see a blank screen. Press your fire button and a large, very effective, shield appears. In single player, most enemies will just walk around you until you lower it down. Some of the more aggressive foes will search for a way around it. Dogs can still get to you since their attack is lower. Here’s a tip, when you see a good shot while your shield is up, press one of your weapon buttons while still hold down the fire button. This will bring up your weapon so you can start shooting in just a seconds time.

The downside, the model and the skin are not what you would think of as a shield but it does allow you keep an eye on your enemies so they cannot sneak behind you.

Overall, the shield is nice touch to the defensive strategy.

  • First - Aid Kit:
Press button 1 three times and a small medical kit appears in front of you.. You can then press the fire button to receive some health. I have yet to figure out if there is a certain amount of health you receive or if it is just a random number. It seems random.

The First - Aid Kit looks like what you would expect one to look like and it obviously is a nice addition to your defensive tools. The only problem is in deathmatch, it might be hard to use since you would are left unarmed while using it.

Button 2:

  • The Sniper Rifle:
Complete power with long distance range, the sniper rifle is a fantastic weapon if you like to see gibs. It does take a while to reload, so don’t use this one for up close battles. Just press button 2 twice to load it up.

The skin is well enough but the model leaves something to be desired. It’s basically just the end of the barrel. It would have been nice to see more of the rifle. Another nice feature would have been a zoom lens, this would have really made it a sniper. It does use 4 shells per shot so watch your resources.

  • Tommy Gun:
Press button 2 three times and receive the tommy gun. The sound for it is great and the model and skin are both nicely done. The only problem is that it is not very effective. It takes a lot of shots to put down your target. The upside to this is that you get six shot per shell.

  • Splatter Gun:
The splatter gun can be brought up by pressing button 2 four times. The model is nothing more than the barrel of the weapon but the skin makes look interesting enough. It could have been better by showing more of the weapon.

It is called the splatter gun because it usually splatters your foe into many gibs. This of course is a good thing. It is most effective at long distances, but it sometimes just throws your target into the air and pushes them across the room instead of killing them. This is a problem since each shot cost you 10 shells. I would suggest using the shotgun instead because you can put a grunt down in 2 to 3 shots where with the splatter gun it could take 20 to 30 shells.

Button 3:

  • Riot Gun:
The riot gun can be accessed by pressing button 3 two times. The model and skin are nothing more than a modified shotgun. It does have some power, but it’s best in close up battles. The spread of the shells is far to wide for long distance shots. It does eat up a lot of ammo as well, 4 shells per shot. I recommend Quakes regular weapons over this one.

  • Fire Bomb:
The fire bomb can be brought up by pressing button 3 three times. The skin and model are just slight modifications of the grenade launcher. Unlike the riot gun, this weapon does have its uses. It launches what looks like some sort of lava rock at your target and upon contact it shatters into many little fires. Be careful, the flames can hurt you to.

  • Machine Gun:
Probably one of the most useful weapons, the machine gun is brought up by pressing button 3 four times. It has great speed and power and chews through your ammo at 2 shells per shot. Once again the model is just the barrel of the gun and the skin isn’t anything more exciting, but that takes nothing away from this gun.

Button 4:

  • Nail Cloud Gun:
One of the best model jobs in the entire patch is the Nail Cloud Gun. It can be activated by pressing button 4 two times. It fires 10 nails per shot so watch your ammo, but the power is well worth the cost. It looks like it has 5 barrels and the skin is similar to the nailgun. Definitely a cool weapon.

  • Poison Dart Gun:
This interesting weapon poisons your victims upon contact. Afterwards you can watch your foe wither in pain until they eventually decease. The Poison Dart is activated by pressing button 4 three times. It looks more like a blow dart than a gun.

A cool weapon but not very effective against stronger enemies. Your enemies can and will still shoot at you so watch with caution.

  • Flare Gun:
Another modification to the grenade launcher skin is featured here for the Flare Gun. Press button 4 four times to check it out. It shoots a multicolored cube at your target that moves very slow. Once it reaches it does a decent amount of damage but you could take more damage while waiting on it to make contact. Just use the Grenade Launcher.

  • Smile Gun:
The smile gun is available by pressing button 5 two times. Imagine taking the super nailgun, add a couple of barrels, and try to spread it straight and you’ll have a good idea of how it looks. It offers complete domination. It fires 20 nails per shot so keep a watch on your ammo supply.

  • Flame Thrower:
This mod uses 1 nail per shot and its lack of power is disgusting. You can load up this useless weapon by pressing button 5 three times. The model and skin are boring and the little flames it shoots out look very silly. Why you would use this weapon is beyond me.

  • Net Launcher:
Press button 5 four times and get the Net Launcher. This interesting weapon uses 5 nails per shot and surrounds your target in a net of nails. The model is a revised version of the super nailgun and the skin is a straight copy. It does have some descent strength, usually one to two shots take your foes down, depending on your target. This one is recommended.

Button 6:

  • Teleport Crystal Launcher:
Press button 6 two times and you’ll get this interesting piece of equipment. Shoot it and when it explodes you will be automatically teleported to that location. A neat advantage is that if you fire it at your foe you will telefrag them, (thats where you teleport on top of someone). It uses 10 rockets per shot so watch your supply.

  • Chain Grenade:
Another great mod here. Press button 6 three times and get the chain grenade. It uses 4 grenades per shot but once fired it works like a normal grenade except that when it explodes it launches another grenade. This continues 7 times. So basically you get seven shots for the cost of 4. Be warned, the paths of these grenades are unpredictable and could come back to you, also, you can only fire two chain grenades at a time. The skin is just another modification of the grenade launcher.

  • Proximity Mines:
Press button 6 four times and get the oldest trick in the book. Launch out a proximity mine and when your foe gets to close, BOOM!! It requires 3 rockets per shot but is worth it. The mine looks very cool but the skin is, once again, another modification of the grenade launcher. The only thing I would have liked better was if you could shoot the mine farther away from you. It does have a warning beep for when you get to close.

Button 7:

  • Chain Rocket Launcher:
Press button 7 two times and you’ll get this useless weapon. At first I thought this would be like the chain grenade, but I was highly disappointed to find out that it wasn’t.

For starters, this weapon is for long distance only. Up close, it shoots right past. I don’t know if this is a bug or the way it’s supposed to be. It is also very weak which doesn’t add up since it uses 5 rockets per shot. The model and the skin make look very alien, but other than that, I would suggest you stay clear.

  • Homing Rockets:
This one uses 8 rockets per shot but is a great addition to your arsenal. Press button 7 three times and you’ll see the usual rocket launcher with a small targeter added to the front. Once, fired the rockets will home in on any nearby targets. It will then tell you what the target is. Very nice.

  • The Nuke:
Press button 7 four times and get the weapon to end all weapons. The Nuke. I have tried other mods that claimed to be nukes and this one takes the cake. Toss this baby into an area full of enemies and run. I repeat, run. You will hear it counting down with beeps and the closer the beeps get to each other, the closer to devastation. You can only fire one nuke at a time, which is good thing since it causes such damage and uses 50 rockets per launch.

Button 8:

  • Ball Lightning Gun:
Press button 8 two times and get ready for a storm. The Ball Lightning gun uses 4 cells per shot. It has a good amount of power but moves very slowly toward its target. An opponent would easily evade this. To help make up for this downfall, it shoots out beams of electricity upon contact to any surface, that way you could still give some damage to your target but not nearly as much as direct contact. The model is a revised thunderbolt, which looks very cool.

  • Shockwave:
The Shockwave is a very powerful weapon to have, especially for close combat. The model looks interesting enough but the real eye candy is the the shockwave itself. It covers the entire area and uses 6 cells per shot. The main problem is that it doesn’t travel very far. You can get this weapon by pressing button 8 three times.

  • BF(Lightning)G:
One of the most loved weapons of Doom, the B.F.G. has been created by several mod authors. Each one fell short of glory but this one is the exception. It has the same model as the Ball Lightning gun except for the skin is done slightly different. It fires a ball of lightning just like the ball lightning gun except that this one shoots electric bolts at any targets in the area as soon as you fire it. Upon contact burst into several smaller balls that also fire electric bolts. It does considerable amounts of damage but uses 50 cells per shot.

Overall:

The Xoron Weapons Patch offers 23 new additions to Quake. Most of them add a lot to the gameplay with only a few being a waste of time. The mods themselves mostly suffer from lack of imagination as far as the models go. If they would have been made up a little better this patch would’ve scored much higher.

Still, I highly recommend this patch to anyone who is looking for some new added fun for Quake
