The Corral

The Corral is a medium sized id base map. A couple of non id base textures have been thrown in, but for the most part, it’s similar to e1m1, The Slipgate Complex.

The architecture is solid, good work. With it’s many wide open areas, it has a heavy deathmatch influence. Everything looks good, courtesy of very good texturing, and angular architecture. And small, but nice, details have been added, such as blue lights, nice ceiling details, and the occasional crate. Although nothing looks truly outstanding, the small details here and there makes the level look really good.

The layout is simple, but effective. The level is based around a large, multi-floor atrium, with offshoot halls and corridors. As stated above, a heavy deathmatch influence, as many times you can see the entire level from one vintage point. I liked this very much, as it made the game play very interesting. Progression is just straight fighting the entire map, with only one gate you have to open the entire map.

The game play is simply great, to start out. You are immediately under attack from grunts, enforcers, and dogs, with heavy fire coming from all directions. If you’re a careful player, the beginning will be very tough, the best method is to charge in with guns blazing. This fighting is very hectic, and is maintained until the end. Even though this is a medium sized map, there is almost a hundred enemies on hard. The deathmatch inspired layout, as well as the fact of no lifts, only stairs in this level, makes it very interesting. Enemies can track you down, seeing as they have no lifts to navigate, so you are never safe. The ending was a let down though, tame compared to what was encountered earlier.

Very much worthwhile, for it’s hectic fighting, and it’s twist on an old theme.
