Immediately after the opening dialog and bizarre intro, you are given a showcase of some fantastic work with architecture and texture use. Lots of work went into the design of the level and it definitely shows.

The best points of this map is by far the design. A3 features some interesting twist on your usual get the key to progress further game play. The level itself does a lot of twisting and turning with each new area done in spectacular detail. I highly recommend this map just for viewing pleasure alone.

The game play is fierce, offering some of the hardest traps I’ve come across in a Quake level. I especially liked the dialog for the dog, just play it to see what I’m talking about.

Supplies are readily available to you before and after most battles giving a nice balance to A3. Weapons featured here are the Double Barrel Shotgun, both Nailguns, the Grenade Launcher, and the Thunderbolt. My only advise is that you use your ammo sparingly, you’ll need it for the end. Which brings up the only issue with A3 that I’m not completely happy with.

For the end, you enter a decent size arena type area where you get attacked by Ogres and Knights. After disposing of the them the floor descends into the ground to create a pit. Once you enter the pit you are then introduced to the next batch of Quake which consists of Hell Knights. Defeat them and the floor descends again where you will fight with more Ogres and then Shamblers. Once you rid the area of all Quake foes the floor then opens and reveals the exit. I enjoyed the arena style battle and the new twist for an ending but it proved very difficult to pass, especially when you get into the smaller pit with the Ogres and you’re surrounded by chainsaws and grenades. My only recommendation is that you use the Grenade Launcher first so that you will still have the Nailguns to resort to. If you use the Grenade Launcher last you will more than likely dispose of yourself.

Overall, this was a fun level with great detail put into the architecture and design. Download and savor in the work that Pingu put into it.
