Here comes, as indicated by the name, a desert theme map, introduced by a fairly common, but effective premise. Also used are the Hypnotic mission pack ( Scourge of Armagon ) entities, meaning you must have it installed for the level to run properly. You do have it installed, right? Right?

Architecture is very good, and conveys the theme of a desert fortress quite nicely. Curves are prolific, utilized everywhere you look, building fronts, hallways, ceiling details, pretty much everywhere. And that’s not it. These great looking curves are adorned with metal detailing, such as spikes, windows, and trim. All of this is built into very angular, believable canyon walls. Architectural highlights include the scorpion church, the several building fronts, and the seemingly flawless interlay of stone and brick. This map uses the ugly yellow quake textures, but when applied in this fashion they make the map look good.

Layout is very good also, although this map is of medium size, it is so well connected that is seems smaller. You start out and exit in canyons, with a fortress in between. The fortress in constructed of a couple of multi level structures, that are all conveniently connected. Progression is button pushing, and getting a gold key that goes to a very large door…

Game play is great fun, with scrags and the centroid being very prominent, probably accounting for more than half of the map’s 84 enemies. Vores and fiends also make an appearence. Not very challenging overall. Most fights are staged with centroid on the ground, and scrags harassing you from above. But you are always equipped with the right weaponry, as well as more than enough ammo and health to get you through. The ending isn’t that hard, but is a worthy climax.

With an unique look, and fun game play, there is no reason to pass this one over.
