The title of this map is quite a bit frightening; I know I don’t want any devastation in my penile region. Thankfully there isn’t any penile mutilation of any sort, because I don’t think I could quite handle that. The level starts off with you shooting out from an air pipe into a wonderfully constructed opening room (see screen 1). Awaiting you are some knights, armor, a double-barreled shotgun, and some shells. The main thing about this level that’s going to catch your eye is the incredible amount of detail in the architecture. Screen shot 3 gives you a pretty good idea of the type of detail you’ll be gawking at throughout the level. Shot 4 has some pretty (ahem) interesting architecture in it too if you look closely. Penile Devastation has that whole techish cathedral feel which I feel has been done way too much, so it’s nothing extraordinarily new. Then again, who says something has to be new in order to have fun fragging up to 84 monsters?

You can play this map on skill levels 0-3, so if you’re like me and totally suck, then you can just drop that skill level down to 0. Then you can pretend to be the master of Quake, and live a happy life. I really liked the monster placement in this map; there’s monsters hiding around every corner, and some even spawn in behind you. You’ll be fighting nearly every monster that Quake has to throw at you, and at the final battle you’ll be fighting them nearly all at once. You’ll be fighting these enemies off with a pretty slim arsenal, that being mainly just your double barrel, and occasionally the nailgun. You also get a grenade launcher, but I often found myself in too cramped of areas to really get much use out of it. All of your nails will end up getting wasted on that cuddly Shambler that patrols the area just behind that ogre in screen shot 2, that is of course, if you don’t get wasted yourself. As you walk through the map you’ll encounter small mixed groups of foes, most of which shouldn’t cause you too much trouble. As with any SP map, they progressively become bigger and bigger groups, and like I said occasionally they will pop up behind. I know I caught a grenade in my back a couple times. This all builds up to the final climatic battle which is incredibly difficult even on the lower skill levels. Check out Screenshot 5 for a glimpse of the final battle area, where you will bump into a serious amount of enemies. I think I counted something around 30 enemies at the end. There’s air tubes on the sides of the cave, where enemies comes up, while there’s a room behind you with an air tube that leads down to the room you’re in. That tube doesn’t cause any harm at first, so you might end up ignoring everything behind you. If you do, you’ll be respawning. Don’t worry; you’ll know what I mean.

Now the one thing that really makes this map click for me is the superb item placement. It’s just about perfect, with armor being scarce and health being just enough to keep you standing. There’s probably a few too many boxes of shells, but it’s nothing that’ll hinder you any, because you won’t even notice how many shells you have left. You’ll be too busy defending yourself. I would have appreciated another box or two of nails, but if you find one of the four secrets then you’re nail problems will be solved. Speaking of secrets, there’s also a quad hidden in the map, with some interesting brushwork to accompany it. Unfortunately the quad won’t do you any good whatsoever since the teleporter out of the quad room sends you back to the start of the level, and you have to fend off a bunch of enemies and a shambler for it. All in all this map shows that R.P.G spent a lot of time testing item placement for hours trying to get everything just right, and he did just that.

If you’re in the mood for some good wholesome fragging fun, then this map suits your needs perfectly. Penile Devastation has moody lighting, beautiful architecture, perfect item placement, and a ton of blood thirsty monsters hungry for you, so I can’t imagine this one being passed up. Although I guess some people just want new maps that totally push the envelope, but I’m telling you, you’re missing out
