D-Day: Normandy is an excellent World War II multiplayer mod created by ViperSoft. You are part of either the Allies are Axis. You can play as an American, German, British, ,Russian, or Japanese soldier. There are several different classes of soldier, a few being: infantry, officer and airborne classes.

The gameplay isn’t frantic, where everyone is jumping off levels and bouncing off walls, while laser beams shoot from a rifle. The running and walking is slowed down to a more realistic speed. Every weapon has its own characteristics and their weight will effect how fast you can move. Some weapons will have kickback and have turn bolt action. With the heavy machine guns you will have to kneel or be prone to fire the weapon. If you don’t use “tru-sight”, some weapons will be far less accurate or may not even fire. You can even be set ablaze via a flamethrower, and be quickly extinguished if your able to find water to jump into.

You’ll find that each class of soldier has its own special set of skills. For example, a medic can not only replenish a soldiers health, but you can pick up a weapon and fight. Officers can call airstrikes, engineers can set a charge of TNT to blow bridges, etc. Class strengths are compensated with weaknesses, such as slower running ability or a shorter ranged weapon. As a soldier class, there is always a unique part you can play during a campaign.

There is a definite sense of team play, as some of the maps are objective based. There are maps when one side has the advantage and the other clearly doesn’t. There are parts in certain maps when you have to count on a teammate for a lift to a platform. D-Day has several maps and campaigns where you can test your accuracy with an M1 Garand or strain your nervous system while you run screaming like a little girl through the halls of Simserhof bunker while two Germans give chase.

D-Day can be played through dial-up with little frustration and be played decently on older systems. D-Day Normandy is very addictive.. I lost 2 years of my life (and two cats) after I started playing it. It took me a couple of hours not to get shot every time I walked out or to be called a noob. To avoid being called a noob, or worse, it is a good idea to read the rules first. D-Day has a tight community and you will usually find a nice sized battle going on during a weekend night.

There are tools, information, news updates, and a forum at D-Day Dev Central. DDC is a solid branch off of the D-Day site and the creator of the above working file. This file is a special compilation of the D-Day Normandy mod which has additional campaigns and updates. Thanks to Fafner for supplying the community with this file. DDC has links to server browsers and apps to help you locate any active servers. DDC also holds the basic versions of D-Day Normandy, both are easier on dial-up at approximately 35MB. These basic versions have five maps and come in add-on and standalone packages. There is also a beta singleplayer D-Day called GRIM D-Day at D-Day Dev Central. Grim, if you’re reading this, keep up the good work and release another version!

So, go back to your online FPS roots and play the original WWII modification of first person shooters-DDay: Normandy.
