This is one of the most interesting maps this reviewer has played. Tons of twist and turns with a good feeling of exploration. This map shines with creativity but lacks in theme.

The design really stands out here with it’s narrow walkways and claustrophobic passages. Only to be out done by the larger areas, especially the cool graveyard area pictured in screenshot 2. Although I enjoyed the cramped passageways I didn’t understand the point in having them just dead end into these large rooms with nothing of importance. It seems to be set in a twisted castle unlike most castles seen in a Quake. Some very cool traps that you will need to watch out for to obtain much needed weapons and the rune that is required to exit the level.

Weapons featured here are the double barrel shotgun, which you receive right at the beginning, the super nailgun, the grenade launcher, and the thunderbolt. This arsenal is plenty enough to get you through but the lack of ammo tends to make the action a little to intense in parts.

Texturing is top notch with no noticeable flaws. This is especially impressive since the map features such curvature.

Overall, The Darkness Within was a good starting point for Elek and shows off some terrific texture usage. Although I personally didn’t care for the pointless rooms and the way the levels ends, it still provides some good fun and is worth the download time.
