If saying this is one of the best maps I have ever played is cliche, then I’ll just say “it’s two of the best fictional maps I ever played rolled into one non-fictional map”. Hexorcism brings you into a castle which could easily remind one of what Quake 2 would have presumed to be like if based on the original Quake.

You start off outside the castle with a nice trapped feeling and your ever-powerful pea shooter. You’ll want to find the hidden room in this outside area, and its second level, to help build your confidence instead of theirs. Using any boulders as cover is wise play. You’ll have to do some rock leaping to increase your arsenal before the castle entrance.

Once in the castle all seems quiet with the common isometric room, until you take a few steps to reveal the curiously awaiting hidden. The architectural layout of the castle is extremely well done and not seemed to be just thrown together. I wouldn’t be surprised to find it in any “Castle and Gardens magazine’s top ten issue”. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting those classic quake jumpy scared moments that make you keep checking over your shoulder. You wouldn’t believe this was Kevin Hall’s first map by the design layout and puzzle triggers.

In the castle there is a coliseum type pit area where you’ll get that trapped feeling again. The use of lights is a nice classic movie ambient in the pit. I temporarily freaked as I clawed my stay at survival while the exit door took its hellishly long time to open. Below the castle runs a modest maze of a sewer that you’ll definitely want to scower completely for all its riches.

The enemies in Hexorcism are well spaced and some in groups. The enemies in Hexorcism are challenging in their consistency, but the real challenge is in its intertwined puzzles and pathways of the castle. There are times where you’ll find yourself going into a battle with confidence, but don’t take any ammo bounty for granted. There are 6 secrets in this map, yet I could only find 2 cause my hairline started to recede greatly and astoshingly. You may want to find as many as possible before travelling any further, as I am sure it will improve your nerves during gameplay. All may not be as it seems, but remember somethings don’t last forever-so be quick with your feet to find your pathways.

Overall Hexorcism is simply a great map in the world of Quake 2. With thought provoking puzzles and true blue combat this map is an excellent Q2 single player experience. Hexorcism would fit right into a commercial made add-on. It has that in-house quality. Complimenting the gameplay by throwing in a soundtrack of your choice may be a definite. So, find a “safe-place” and heat up a cup of green tea cause this map may bring a chill into the air.

Would it be cliche to say this is a must download; Yes, this is a must download!

While I haven’t played the map, it seems this review is quite biased - there are no pros/cons, just an overall positive review. Nothing wrong inherently with that - but also looking at the screenshots, this map doesn’t look even the least bit attractive - far from “in house quality”. It could be the choice of screenshots or maybe that’s all there really is to the map? Anyway, those are my thoughts.

well, this is Sawyers first review and obviously he really enjoyed this level. I understand the points your making Phait and I’m sure Sawyer will take these into consideration with future reviews.

Hi Phait, thanks for your quick reply.
    I really didn’t find anything I didn’t like.
I chose the screenshots because I thought maybe those areas showed the ambiance of the map.
Oh yeah, try playing the reviewed map before you start answering the questions in your head :) .

Personally, I like the shots. No they don’t show off some great architecture but as Sawyer said, they have a mood.
