Rigor Mortis is a multiple tiered, vertical fighting, action packed, fragfest extravaganza! Shew, that was one really long title, but it’s true. Rigor Mortis has multiple levels to fire down, and up at all your opponents, but it becomes a bit more frantic than that. You see, not only does it have the amazing vertical aspect to it, but it also has tight hallways that you’ll be running through for all your items and weapons. Better bust out that Super Shotty, because those hallways will get nasty. Gameplay wise this map is a total beast, with action around every single corner, while rails are coming at you from below, and grenades from above. You won’t have a single second to think, it’s all about the fast paced, high octane fragging in this bad boy. One thing I really loved in this map that I feel helped the flow of the map quite well was the use of ladders. I guess I just haven’t seen ladders used much lately, but this map puts them to exceptionally good use. It allows for multiple ways up and down floors, and really gives the overall map flow a kick in the pants.

The weapon placement is spot on, with a weapon nearby at all times, in very appropriate areas. Such as the `nade launcher will be found near the top of the map, and shotguns near the cramped hallways. The item placement was just as good, but it had one quirk that still has me scratching my head. There’s a jacket armor, that requires a tricky little strafe jump onto a tiny ledge from where you either you jump down and take some falling damage or jump back to the previous ledge. While grabbing the armor, if you’re spotted, consider yourself dead. A couple rockets into that hole and you’ll be wondering why you went after the armor. The mega health also requires a tricky strafe jumpy (less tricky than the armor jump), while the body armor is easily attained on the bottom floor. It’s easy to grab, but not easy to live after grabbing.

My only real complaint of this map is that visually it’s nothing you haven’t seen before. The architecture is wonderful to look at, and Pan really did an amazing job with the brushwork. However, I’m sick of the ugly brown textures with orange skies. I know there are textures out there that aren’t brown, so I beg of the Q2 mappers, please use them. The map does look exceptionally good though, its just, brown. However, the lighting is quite impressive, and creates a somewhat moody atmosphere.

All in all this is one excellent map, that should be downloaded. Hopefully some servers start running it, because sadly the bots get horribly confused. It seemed like the ladders had them totally confused since most of them involve jumping over some sort of lava to get on and off of them. This map definitely gets my seal of approval, so go on and start the download!
