Violent and Funky is a map that Mr. Clean designed for use with the Gladiator mod, but I tested it out in just your basic Quake 2 Deathmatch. This is part one of a series of death match maps made for the mod, and its designed for 1v1 style of play. Most of the action occurs in the main central area of the map. There’s two staircases leading out of the central area, where you can either go up or down a ramp. You’ll find a good amount of your weaponry in these areas. As you head to the upper portion of the map there’s a bridge the sits over the central area, which is a nice place to drop grenades down into the center are from. On one side of the bridge you can continue moving a bit further up to find the railgun, on the other side of the bridge if you head up, you’ll grab the body armor. Since you can jump from the railgun and body armor, onto the bridge, and from the bridge to the main area, the map has a really good flow all throughout the level. If you go to the bottom area of the level you’ll find a bridge going over water, although its not all water. It looks like a large pool of water with a bridge but if you’re on the outskirts of the room its just a floor with a water texture, which seemed kind of strange in my opinion. Although underneath the bridge is the mega health. Most of the level is rather dark, so you don’t get to fully enjoy the fine texture choices, nor the architecture, but its still a rather nice looking level. That is when you exclude the weird water.

Item placement is excellent in this map, health is carefully placed all throughout the level. The only part I question is the 4 health packs sitting in the center with a jacket nearby, seemed like a bit much. Although while playing I noticed it worked out really well there. The best part is no matter where you’re at in the map, you’ll be able to grab a weapon of some kind, so you’re never stuck in a corner with a blaster, there’s always something better nearby. I think they’re might be a bit too much ammunition in the level, because I never had to worry even the slightest about running low on ammo. The mega-health is placed in a very dangerous position, which works out nicely. You have to go under the bridge in the lower part of the level to get it, someone can easily send a couple rockets down to you, and seriously rain on your parade.

All in all Violent and Funky turned out to be just that, violent and funky (due to the water). If you’re a death match fan, grab it, it’s definitely worth your while.
