The Death Machine is a short map, but you can probably tell that from its size(662kb). Although it is short, it is still a good single player map. The goal is to find the Death Machine and destroy it then get back to your ship. The file is called fun and that’s what it is, fun. A good quicky and, like this review, not much BS to get in the way.

You’ll backtrack, but not without having any keys first. Secrets are more of a blessing than anything else, because they’ll change a tight ammo challenge situation into an “Oh, OK I’ll just unload on ya all and move on” situation. I haven’t figured out what’s with the extra architecture in any of the rooms, I think it just might be there to add ambience, which shows me the maker cares about my gameplay experience or its there for using in DM play. I played Death Machine over again after finding a few more secrets and it was much easier to play the second time from the get go, especially with the much helpful first secret-it made the gameplay much more relaxed. I found the challenge about a medium difficulty and there is a strogg or two that can make you back off to strategize and reload. I liked the smart design of this map, it made the small area seem much larger. Overall, “The Death Machine” is an excellent Quake 2 quick fix map and fun to see if you can find all the secrets.
