Here we have a large, medieval town. A very convincing town, just as convincing as any medieval village in any recent FPS game. ( Unreal being the one I thought of first ) Fat Controller uses the additional textures from Steve Roscoe’s Village of Dread, which are some of the best custom medieval ones I’ve seen. This has one of the best stories I’ve read for a Quake level, and it’s continued throughout the level, via texts that allow you to put the piece together to figure out what’s going on.

This map looks great. The level is in essence, just as the name suggests. It’s many large buildings, built right next to each other, with alleys connecting sections of the town, with deviations including a great looking dock and an underground green area. Most of the architecture is made up of angles and such, only one room has curves. Every building looks convincing, but some buildings look far better than others. Inside the buildings are very plain, but that’s okay. The visual highlights are the dock at the beginning, the underground area, and the final room.

Design is very good, with the town being very exploratory in nature. A lot of back and forth, but it’s kept interesting as it’s not just retrieving keys, although you do that also. You have to operate machinery, and hit a lot of levers. There are many route paths, seeing as how the town is split into 3 main sections, and you can roam around these sections at will. The level is very dark in nature, and sometimes this can be disorienting, although is adds to the atmosphere, the level being under a black sky and all.

Gameplay is pretty good, with the groups of knights attacking, and ogres, scrags and fiends providing support. 123 enemies on hard for your enjoyment. On this level it actually feels like the enemies are guarding something, due to the monster placement. This map is made even harder by the fact that you are always low on ammo, I even had to ax some death knights. Health is rare itself, I was almost always below 50 health. Except for when I found the secret megahealth. And secrets figure prominently, this level is very, very hard to complete if you do not find the two secrets. The ending introduces an unique idea, putting you in a situation with nowhere near enough ammo to kill everything, requiring you use monster infighting. ( an idea I used for a level of my own ) Although it is interesting, it’s also extremely hard, requiring many tries, but skill setting are in effect if it’s too hard.

Even though it’s very hard, the unique design makes it well worth the download.
