The Terracotta Terror has a caste theme level set in the void. I personally have never cared for the void setting and I think this level would have been greatly improved if it were set in an outside environment. That being said, Terracotta is well designed and offers an interesting new look to Quake.

The levels enemies are comprised mostly of Knights, Scraggs, and Hell Knights, with the occasional Fiend thrown in. The Fiends offered no challenge because all you have to do is dodge their jump and they usually fall off into the void. Scraggs, on the other hand, will appear out of nowhere all over the map so keep your eyes open.

Probably the biggest challenge to Terracotta is when a group of monsters come at you it’s nearly impossible to strafe around them. You have to be aware of how much room you have to back up because you could fall off.

Unfortunately, it’s the gameplay that is my biggest complaint. It soon felt dry killing the same enemies. Even the surprise attacks become expected and loose their touch. The only thing encouraging me to finish the level was to finish the level.

What makes this level shine is the texturing, and its use of Quake’s 3D engine. The sandy brick theme used here compliments the levels design and architecture nicely. As I stated earlier, seeing this level in an outside environment would have sealed the castle theme.

Terracotta is also set up for deathmatch play which I would have loved to try out. Looking at its design suggest some great DM gameplay but unfortunately I wasn’t able to try it unless I used bots and I forsaw them falling off too much.

To sum it up, Terracotta is great eye candy with little gameplay. I suggest you try one of Tronyn’s better maps like ADD2: Scorpion Garrison for SP or Crocodile Tears for DM.
