This is a medium-small sized deathmatch level from BlackPope, and works well with up to 4-6 players. The structure consists of three layers of interconnected chambers, with a couple of teleports and switch-activated jump pads to help you get around. While there’s nothing eye-popping about this map architecturally speaking, the layout is interesting, and it uses some textures from Daikatana.

Lighting is decent throughout most of the level, but a little dark in a few areas. A couple of the weapons are placed in shadowed or unlit areas; if you come upon them at certain angles, you won’t see them at all. This is a little annoying when you’re trying to arm up in a hurry, since you almost have to run over the weapon spawn point in order to tell if it’s there or not.

The item placement is done well, with the weapons spread out through the level logically, and just enough ammo and health present to keep you honest. The MH and RL are placed in the same room, which could create a balance issue, but since this turns out to be the one of the main battle areas, it’s not a problem. My biggest gripe with this map was in the texturing.. a couple of the Daikatana textures reminded me of Doom for some reason, and while that’s a good thing, they needed a little more tweaking. Each tier’s wall texure is different, giving you a good visual cue as to where you are, but they’re tiled in an unnatural way, and could have used some extra brushes to break up the alignment.

These grievances aside, the gameplay works fine. The overhanging ledges offer some good death-from-above attacks with the GL or RL, and the jump-pads add a nice touch to the way the map flows.

I wasn’t crazy about a couple of points, but it still offers some decent gameplay, so be sure to check it out.
