Beyond Belief is just as it says, beyond belief. It’s hard to imagine that such a quality conversion was created over 4 years ago. The architecture and design definitely reign superb in these high quality maps. The first few levels seem like your normal military base levels, but don’t judge to quickly. Just take a second to look around, after you remove the grunts and enforcers of course, and you’ll notice the detail that was put into these levels. There are some awesome ceiling structures that should not be missed and I especially liked the huge pool area. This area looks very nice with the transparent water effect on. See screenshot 1.

As you continue your journey the military bases gently fade away giving in to the lava type levels. This is a very nice transition if you pay attention. From there, the real beauty of Beyond Belief begins to be exposed. You travel through twisted hallways, across wooden bridges, and work your way through pools of slime. All of this just to descend further and further into the depths of what some would probably call Hell.

The way the maps intertwine is especially neat. While playing through the level you have the feeling that these are your standard maps that just leads you in the forward direction, but once you move further through each level a much more complex and twisted map is revealed. Also, keep your eyes opened for traps. There are monster traps through out every level but one level in particular host a button puzzle that was rather difficult to figure out. Hint, look for the pattern on the floor. Features like these show off the time and effort that was put into the design of Beyond Belief.

The balance between ammo and enemies is also well done, usually giving just enough ammo to get you through but you will need to keep watch on your rocket supply, you will need them later. The most dominate weapon has to be the shotgun. In fact, you go quite sometime before finding any other weapons. One theme that flows through all of the maps seems to be plenty of shotgun shells. Several times I would run out of all other ammo but still have the trusty shotgun.

Overall, this conversion leaves you wanting more of this type of quality and all though it was left behind on ftp sites to be forgotten, this classic still holds its head high against the test of time.

i agree with the review completely. i played this one several times, it doesn’t get old for me since i love stuff designed in the style of quake’s shareware episode and this is a nice alternative to that one.
