Demonslair: "Demon's Lair"
(Size: 410k. No Alternative downloads.)

The latest level from the mapping machine formerly known as Tiddles, and it continues his tradition of simpler well made maps, while adding a few more impressive designs and more challenging gameplay. This time the level is done in a traditional Episode 3 metal style, which it sticks to well, but has some distinctive touches, particularly the cool riveted pillars that are prominent throughout. Torches in alcoves, cobbled tunnels and wooden crates also add to the style, while there are a few nice arches and buttresses in places too. The larger start and finish rooms are particularly cool-looking, but elsewhere the level can be fairly plain - the pillars, and some lava details, spice it up, but some more angles, interesting designs and texture details (like in his other levels) are needed in some areas. Lighting is used effectively, with strong sourced lighting from torches and lava, giving a dark ceiling with patches of light that add to the atmosphere. An attractively made level, but I'd have like to have seen more designs as good as the start and finish.

Through the map, there isn't much exploration, but there are a few minor route choices, and a seperate coop start room is a good touch. There is also one small secret which is well worth finding. Gameplay is quite heavy in this map, with solid monster filled combat that provides perhaps more challenge than his previous maps. The medieval lads are out on force, with plenty of Knights and Deathknights on the ground, while Scrags harrass you from above and Ogres bombard you from alcoves - this is a monster packed map with all areas well used for combat. As well as straightforward attacks and some monster gangs, there are a few surprises and shocks which spice up the level, some are entertaining and some can be quite challenging. The gameplay balance is fine, though it can be tough if you don't get the secret, as it builds up well from the start, with little respite from the action. The ending is nicely set-up, but with the items you get before, a bit easy as the climax to the level - perhaps one of the items should have been a secret. The downside is that there are no skill setttings, so those who find it hard going are in trouble. Anyway, another good level, go get it.
