Howdy…

As we are celebrating the 5th birthday of TF, I would like to share an editorial with you, the reader, written by a former member of the PlanetFortress staff, and someone who helped me get into the TFC scene, even if he doesn’t know it.

Here is a brief history of my gaming experience and what I feel about TF, before I launch into this article. I started gaming back in the days of Wolfenstein-3D, but I didn’t purchase my own computer until Feb. of ’98, so I wasn’t really into the whole Quake/TF scene. Then one day I read about this game called Half-Life, and how it was going to revolutionize the gaming industry. Until then, I satisfied myself by playing Rainbow6, and that is where I got my start in online multiplayer gaming.

Multiplayer gaming was the start of a whole new world for me. Each experience I had made me realize I had to get into it more… Get the best hardware, get the best connection, and get the best games. The fateful day I bought Half-Life, 8 days after it premiered in stores, opened a whole new door for me. For the first time I was immersed in an imaginary world. I played Half-Life DM until I could play no more, and then I discovered Team Fortress Classic.

I started searching the Internet for any information I could find on this Team Fortress… Reading all the news sites, looking for anything I could find. I discovered PlanetFortress, and here I have been ever since. Many people don’t realize what kind of community we have here, and the high caliber of people that contribute to make this place great. I think you would be hard pressed to find any better community out there in the gaming world, and hope that everyone will do what they can to make sure TF survives for many years to come.

Out of all the funny and interesting articles PF has had, I would always search for one of the famous “Hal’s Rant-O-Matic” pieces. These articles didn’t always have anything to do with TFC or gaming in general, but they were good reading. I vowed one day I would do something like that, get involved with the TF community, and help bring others the enjoyment I have had… Then one day just recently, I had occasion to correspond with THE Hal… With a few emails back and forth, he agreed to write another piece for PlanetFortress, from which he left the a while ago. It is an eye-opening look into one person’s perspective on Internet life and gaming. I know it matches some of my feelings, and hopefully the views contained within with open some eyes and help people with their feelings towards the TF community.

Now, onto “The Evolving Door…
