Overview:

Computer problems won't stop me from missing another level of the week. And to compensate for not doing my job sooner, this week, i bring you a goodie of a map.

Cease Fire is a map created by non other then fame HL mapper Gustavo. Want good looking? This is the map for you. But does it play well? Keep reading.

Description:

Cease Fire is a "shutdown" style map we've all learned to loved. But the map itself is what makes this map stand above any other: it's a beauty! Gustavo made very good use of some of the default HL textures, as well as a few custom textures such as the very fitting cliff texture you see all over the map.

Since it's a shutdown style map, you need to make your way into the very back of the enemy base in order to shutdown the generator which is powering the lasers guarding the flag. Nothing new here, except that the map is a very defense friendly. With many platforms and elevated areas to put your sentry gun on, you can quickly put an end to that pesky medic trying to push the otherwise easily accessible button. Another thing to make the enemy rethink their strategy, is the long hallway going straight through the base from the battlements to the generator, which is the only way to get there without coming from the "Open fire" style tunnel leading into the flag room. This long and narrow hallway is perfect for snipers waiting for an easy kill. But after playtesting the map, it was a minor issue that a rocket or too couldn't handle.

After successfully shutting down the generator, a short walk (or should i say, a "mad dash") for the flag room is all that stands between you and flag. The very nice flag room itself is outdoors and also quite large. Expect some heavy defense when trying to grab the flag. Using a class that can't rocket/conc jump while coming from the tunnel means you will have to use the slow elevator which leaves you vulnerable to enemy fire. Snipers in the flag room are also something to look for since it's still a fairly long walk to safety after grabbing the flag.

The tunnel is also very large, giving you plenty of room to do a quick conc jump to get you around the corner towards your base. But the very nicely crafted and fitting architecture all around you will make it worth while.

Lighting all over the map is reminiscent of a desert, with plenty of light coming from the sky. You won't find any pitch black areas here in this map!

Conclusion:

Cease Fire : The "shutdown style, Open Fire looking, desert lit and just plain good fun" map that's another must have for your tfc map folder! Wether it's on a public server or a clan match, it's sure to please every type of player, regardless of your favorite class.

BlackPanther's Mapping Guide

How do you make a shutdown style map?

Shutdown maps have been gaining popularity ever since the original map (Shutdown) has been released. The basis of the map is to deactivate lasers (or something else) in order to get access to the flag.

This may be done with just a simple func_button triggering a multi_manager that in turn, triggers the env_beam entities making up the lasers. But it's a good idea not to use the damage setting of the env_beam to make the enemy think twice before taking the leap. The entity just isn't suited for it, and it can not work everytime. It's best to make a trigger_hurt where there lasers are that is also turned off with the multi_manager.The rest is standard CTF entities for the flag capture. Don't forget to give the button a "delay before reset" value. 60 seconds should be good, but it all depends on your map's layout and how much time it takes go get from the button to the flag.

Also, a nice thing to have in your map is a vox that yells out something like "Warning! Security systems deactivated!" to let your team knows when your flag is vulnerable. But if you do, i beg you NOT to go crazy with the "volume" setting. Setting it to 4 is quite enough.
