Command point style maps suffer a noticable lack of popularity in the custom map servers. Ever since Valve began offering alternatives, CanalZone2 has all but vanished from map rotations. In spite of this, one such map deservedly stands head and shoulders above the pack.

Tiger is set around a small harbor during World War Two. Five Command Points are spread around the harbor in an assymetrical manner. Command Point One is a simple concrete pad overlooking the length of the harbor. Across the glacis from CP 1 is the map's namesake, a Tiger tank that serves as Command Point Two. The tank features a usable machinegun that can chew up friend and foe alike. Command Point Three is the ubiquitous Warehouse with plenty of those ever handy crates. CP4 is inside a small boat in the center of the map. Command Point Five is the sniper's dream, a tall lighthouse that overlooks the entire map.

As with most Command Point maps, demomen enjoy an additional way to help their team. Sneaking into the enemy base and detpacking their control center will remove any command points owned by the opposing team. An alarm will sound to alert defenders of the presence of a demoman inside their base, which is a nice touch.

On the whole, Tiger offers an immersive map and a nice change of setting from the darkly styled Command Point maps we've been made to suffer through. Although the assymetric layout makes the map necessarily unsuited to clan matches, it is entirely enjoyable on a public server. As custom maps go, Tiger is a fine example of a theme carried out to it's full potential.

    How Did They Do That?

Half-Life comes with a number of default skyboxes, but few are as appropriate for some TFC maps as many authors seem to think. Tiger uses a nice ocean setting skybox to reinforce the map's theme.

Custom skyboxes should be located in the halflife\gfx\env folder and consist of 12 files, six bitmaps(.bmp) and six targa(.tga) files. Some video settings use the bitmaps for the skybox, others use the targas so include both with your map.

To make the skybox appear in your map, edit the map properties (worldspawn). The property that sets the name of the skybox is "cl_skyname" or "default skybox" and even if you don't use a skybox you should always set this to "desert" or some such. Skybox files all have two letter suffixes (i.e. dn, up, ft, lf, rt, bk), disregard these when you enter the skybox name in the worldspawn properties. For further information, try one of these sites:
