Clan Info
- dgault
I think there use to be a link to a TFC clan/person reruiting place on your website. Do you still have that link?
HardCharger: Yes... Yes we do. Slick?
Slick: We used to have a clan announcements (recruits and such) on site, but we haven't had anyone available to update that in quite some time. The Catacombs has since taken over pretty much all of our clan news needs, you can keep up to date there.

Neon Colored screen?
- Weskey DeFord
Whenever I go 2 play TFC, halflife or op4 my screen goes neon collored. Can any1 tell me how 2 fix this!? Alt-tab dont work and reinstalling hl dont work.
HardCharger: Well, it sounds to me like like it could be a couple of things, including either your videocard or moniter. Unfortunately, without some detailed system specs, I can't tell ya too much...
Slick: I would make sure you have the latest and greatest video drivers for you video card. A good program to use is GLSetup to make sure you have what you need.

Modem To Modem Play for Halflife/TF2
- kanemcn
I wanted to know if tf2 will support modem connection between two local computers like dial-up, unlike Half-Life. If you know will you e-mail me and if you don't ask the guys at Valve next time you get a chance to!
HardCharger: Check out this site! Modem to Modem Play via TCP/IP
Slick: Currently there is no planned support for a dual dialup created by Valve for TF2.

Gamespy3D
- Kisc
I've noticed what appears to be a lack of support and caring coming from the gamespy staff, with regards to Gamespy 3d. 'Charger, do you PF guys have resourses you can ask about this? This 224 update is the first one in some time, and the weekly "fests" are all about Gamespy Arcade. I've gotten the impression that Gamespy Arcade is for the newbie-types... maybe 3d is to Arcade as Unix is to windows? sort of? I use ICQ, IRC, and Gamespy 3d. Nothing I've heard indicates that I'd like Gamespy Arcade better (especially because I'll be irritated if I have to pay for Arcade too...), but I'm starting to wonder if eventually I won't have a choice.
HardCharger: Well, from what I know, Gamespy.com has no plans to stop support of Gamespy3D. Personally I use Gamespy Arcade, and love it... However instead of me babbling on, lemme try and ask the one person who is definately "in the know", GSI's own Online Events Coordinator, Karen "Cobby" Cobb.
Cobby: We get asked this question often. GameSpy3D is seen as the tool for hardcore gamers who just want to get into their game and that's all. GameSpy Arcade has more bells and whistles, if you will. More game types supported (peer to peer etc) and more options, such as instant messaging other Arcade users, surfing the net, downloading demo's patches etc. You can also get live help 24/7 on Arcade.

GameSpy3D and Arcade were developed and maintained by two different teams. They will both continue to be updated and new releases posted.

Perhaps this page can explain things better than I can. Gamespy Arcade FAQ

TF2 Team Colors?
- Ryan Lee
I liked the info on TF2 but one thing I would like to know is how you tell the 2 teams apart? I looked in the screen shots section and it seemed to me that both teams looked the same? Is there going to be different colors for each team like in tfc?
HardCharger: I don't know, actually, but I think I would like to see some type of different style in TF2, than what was used in TFC. Only time will tell...
Slick: I actually don't "know" the answer to your question, I know that Valve has tossed around the colors of camo idea, and also the style of it... Along with the same idea that's used in Counter-Strike with different models etc. I'll guarantee you that you'll be able to distinguish different teams, perhaps closer to release we'll see some screenshots of what they look like.

Custom Sprays on PF?
- Scotty Hawkins
You should have a section on how to make custom sprays. Now i know there are tons of sites that do have tutorials, but one on PF would probably get a lot more traffic. Sprays are like personal webpages, everyone should have one.
HardCharger: I think that would be a great idea... I know that I enjoy my color sprays. I started out with a picture of the Marine Corps War Memorial, and now have moved to a PF spray, in honor of the recent PF/PHL match...
Slick: A VERY good idea. I've added this to my "to-do" list. You'll see it in our guide shortly...

The usual make me famous letter...
- GIC]Squaresoftknight SS Sturm
Please Put This Up As A Headline.

My Name is Grant but my screen name is [GIC]Squaresoftknight SS Sturm. Say that ill be back on the great server of ViBig in a few days or so and that i cant wait its been awhile..........thx
HardCharger: OK Poof! Now you are famous!

A Critism
- Herzeleidd
That was the most horrible article I have ever read. The misspellings, the horrible grammar, and the fact that he contradicted all of his ideas. Example One: Grenades are spelt "gernades". Jesus Christ go back to 5th grade. Example Two: Contradicting messages. "Run around enemy" + "Run straight for flag and back to the capture point". Example Three: Waste of space. Acid Drop repeats the words "something" and "stuff" just to take up some space. Oo you're a big boy now, your article is longer. Conclusion: Acid Drop is a freaking moron. Plain and simple, this guy couldn't play Scout if his Mom's life depended on it.
HardCharger: Well... we try to post everyones opinions, fair and square... Sometimes, you have to realize that people can be wrong, and the only way to correct it is to do it yourself... If anyone wants to submit their tips/rants/etc. send em it, and we will check it out.

Custom Maps and Survival Pack
- A Surprise! (on family servers :-])
Hey there PF, I really do like the whole custom map movement you got going there - survival pack is a very good idea - BUT like you pointed out many a times most people dont care enough to play them. SO - I propose in addition to releasing the map packs - also get a list of servers that run them and publish them with the maps (along with information like what region they are in and at what times they run survival pack maps). I think that would work quite nicely.

I for one would really like to play more maps. And I also think the only one organization that can make custom maps more played would be PF (other than Valve of course) - so good luck to you.
HardCharger: Thanks for the response! The Survival Pack, IMNSO is a really good thing... Now, for this stuff to happen, we need more feedback and interest from the gaming community... Any server ops interested???

Add On .PAKS for TFC...
- Brought to you by HC, PF's HardChargin' Newsie!
Well, a couple of weeks ago, I asked for some feedback on how you, the gaming community felt about .PAK addons for TFC... Well, the email has been pouring in, and I felt it was time to post some peoples views on them, so here goes!

Seeing as you wanted some rants about addon paks I thought I'd add my thoughts.

Some people seem to think that addon paks for TFC are cheating, and that Valve should force player models for every model in the game. I happen to disagree with this. OK, granted, it may be possible to cheat using an addon pak, but it is the same for Half-Life and any other mods that support custom player models, yet there would be hell to pay if Valve stopped allowing custom models in Deathmatch. Why should TFC be any different? Yes, so Valve have forced models on some of the models like the Sentry gun and (for some reason) the scout, but there's really no need to force models on the rest because adding models should be no different from any other game.

Would this allow cheating? Probably, but people will always find a way to cheat, and those llamas who do cheat are only degrading the game for themselves. I say leave paks alone and let those who want to change Valve models to do so. It's not compulsory to download the pak, and no self respecting site would host paks that cheat, so they will only be available for those who are determined to find them.

So are paks fair? Cheating blah? Well fair, yes, they are as fair as any custom player model for any other game. Cheating, possibly, but only under the same rules again as custom models from any other game. Well, as for blah, isn't everything really?

PlayingKarrde

Nah they aren't cheating, they change the game in no way except for different models and sounds and such, in a way i have seen some that have actually hurt the user with some things as no blood coming out of an enemy spy and such. All in all i think they are great and add some new sutff to an evolving wheel of boredom that is normal TFC, expecially this new PAK it is great.

Summerfield

Slick: We had some very good comments about paks and if they are really cheating. It's a tough call because if you want to change your models/sounds because you like the different ones better, you should be able to. But if you want to change them so you have some type of advantage over others, you shouldn't be able to. It's a really tough decision, that's one reason why I think we may see something like "pure" servers in TF2, sad as that is.

Goosie, j00 gots some 'splainin to do!
HardCharger: Yeah, you know what I am talkin about!

Slick Spot
Once again we meet at the crossroads, (or express way) of a Slick Spot. A lot of good things are going on here at PlanetFortress. My changes to our TFC and TF1 Sections have increased site traffic more than I ever expected (additional 1,000 to 2,000 sessions per day), so you can bet I'll be polishing those up even more. I've got a list of improvements to do 'round site like these sections, I'm working through them one by one, you'll see them as each is finished, some you'll like as much as the TF Sections, others may not be as useful to you as others, but it's all good in our attempt to make PlanetFortress a nice home for you. Remember, if you have any ideas, let it be known.

For what's ahead and coming up, you'll be able to read a write up from myself and Mudd from PlanetHalfLife on the PF vs. PHL game. Were working out the timing to launch the articles on the same day, they both are written and ready to go, so look out for that.

If your wondering the main delay in this mailbag, it's simply because we did not receive a whole lot of mail. HardCharger does an excellent job with getting on the bag, but without many reader submissions it has to wait. I like to avoid doing topics for the mailbag as that seems to generate less random thoughts. But either way send in some mail!

I've got to run to class, so have a good day!
- The Slick
